An emotional Mike Candrea: "Not often do you get to do something that you love to do and surround yourself with people that you never want to see leave. Every athlete that I've ever been a part of at Arizona, it's a lifelong relationship. And as a coach, that's what you hope."
Asked Mike Candrea what was going through his mind when he was leaving the dugout for the last time: “I was probably thinking that was it. Like I always tell the girls: as long as we have innings to play, we got a chance. And then it was like, no more innings. Reality set in.“ 😭
Aari McDonald said she will always remember how resilient this Arizona team was: "No matter what situation, adversity, myself, my teammates, the coaches, we always fought. Man, this was a good group of ladies that I played with."
Mike Candrea was emotional after Arizona softball won the Tucson Regional last weekend. He was asked if that's a sign that he won't be returning next season.
His answer was great: "I don't take those moments for granted."
Arizona should rename the ballpark “Mike Candrea Field at Rita Hillenbrand Memorial Stadium” and put a statue at the entrance. You gotta know who built the place before you can enter.
Touching tribute to Katie Meyer by
@StanfordWBB
at the Pac-12 Tournament. Came out wearing
@StanfordWSoccer
warmup shirts and wristbands with Katie's initials and jersey number.
Jedd Fisch says Arizona football can leverage Barstool's sponsorship of the Arizona Bowl to grow the UA brand: "El Presidente is very famous in the world of who we are recruiting. ... My goal is to roll out the red and blue carpet next time they're on campus."
Taylor Dockins (
@16tmoney
) is battling liver cancer, but that didn’t stop her from taking the circle for
@Fullerton_SB
against Arizona today. So inspirational.
Thrilled to announce that I have accepted an offer from the Pac-12 to be its new digital editorial manager.
Among other things, I will be running and the Pac-12 Now app.
My first day is Oct. 4. Can’t wait to be part of the Conference of Champions!
At one point,
@ArizonaSoftball
was 0-8 in Pac-12 play. Now they’re heading to Super Regionals. What a story. Props to the players and coaches for sticking with it through the tough times. It paid off.
Maya Nnaji, Zeke's sister, just committed to Arizona on Instagram. She's a 5-star post and the No. 7 player in the 2022 class, the highest-ranked recruit the Wildcats have ever landed.
Deandre Ayton and the Suns winning the West means at least one Arizona Wildcat has played in the NBA Finals in seven straight seasons, as well as 18 of the last 27 seasons.
Arizona coach Mike Candrea says the Pac-12 Network has to do more to generate exposure for its softball teams: "Because it's broken right now. It is a conference of champions, but you can't just sit on a conference of champions."
Disappointing finish, but you have to evaluate Arizona's season with perspective. They were unranked to start, but won the Pac-12 and earned a 1-seed in the NCAA Tournament. WAY ahead of the curve through Tommy Lloyd's first season and next year's roster will be great too.
Aari McDonald on UConn: "We already know what they're about. Powerhouse, so well-coached, skillful players. But, hey, I like my chances with my teammates. Ride or die. We're going to war."
Arizona football program is now 100% vaccinated. That number includes players, coaches and staffers. Impressive collective effort considering the UA isn’t requiring it.
Shoutout to Kerr Kriisa for stepping up when Arizona needed it most. Scored 17 of his 19 points in the second half. Love his grit and killer instinct. Very T.J. McConnell-esque.
.
@ArizonaSoftball
just clinched its 25th Women's College World Series appearance and this has to be, by far, the most improbable of them all.
Cats started 0-8 in the Pac-12 and finished tied for last.
Unbelievable turnaround. This team should be so proud of its resiliency.
Arizona coach Mike Candrea's reaction to the Pac-12 only having one top-8 seed in the NCAA Tournament: "I know our conference is much better than what it was shown today, and it irritates me."
UA softball coach Mike Candrea on Arizona parting ways with Sean Miller: "I don't know all the details, so I'm not going to try to comment, but I'm gonna miss the guy. I really loved his passion. He was a player's coach and he did a lot for this program."
"We have to join the party and flop, run full speed, take fouls with our chest and slide in underneath."
I love when Sean Miller subtly criticizes the way college basketball is officiated 😂
Adia Barnes: "Aari hands down, no doubt is the best player in Arizona history. ... A better player than I could have ever been. I'm proud that I coached her."
What a win for Arizona. Overcame travel issues and a 13-point deficit to beat a solid Illinois team in a hostile road environment. Cats definitely weren’t their sharpest, but man did they show a ton of heart. No doubt they’re a top-5 team.
Great season for
@ArizonaSoftball
in their first year under Caitlin Lowe. Bounced back from an 0-8 start in Pac-12 to win a game at the Women's College World Series.
Should be even better next year. They have a strong recruiting class and could return their entire lineup.
Personal news: I’m stepping down as editor-in-chief of
@AZDesertSwarm
on Sept. 27.
I’m going to miss covering Arizona Athletics—I’ve met so many amazing people along the way—but I’m excited for what’s next.
Thanks for following along for all these years. You made my job so fun.
.
@ArizonaWBB
just beat No. 9 Oregon State on the road for its first-ever win over a top-10 team.
Another huge step forward for Adia Barnes and this program.
Bill Walton’s Pac-12 Player of the Year? “One of the three guys from Arizona—Mathurin, Koloko or Tubelis.”
Also said Tommy Lloyd should be Coach of the Year.
Caitlin Lowe on becoming Arizona's new head coach: "It’s been a week full of emotions because many of us thought this day would never come, and count me as part of the crowd who used to say ‘man, I pity the fool who takes over as coach.' I’m that fool and I’m ready to go."
Just want to say that I really appreciate how much interest you guys have shown in my coverage of Arizona’s women’s teams.
My goal is to help grow these sports and get them the recognition they deserve, and it’s awesome for me to see that in action.
Thank you so much.
Why Maya Nnaji picked Arizona: "I want to go to a school that can fulfill my aspirations of being a doctor and play for a coach who looks like me. I want to blaze my own trail and win championships with a program that knows what it takes to get there."
Arizona women’s golf just upset No. 1 Stanford to advance to the NCAA semifinals. Gile Bite Starkute sank a long birdie putt in an extra hole to seal it. Wow.
Mike Candrea said he is leaving for Italy next week to spend a month there to advise the Italian National Team and spend time with his wife Tina in Tuscany.
"You know, observe some of the vineyards and see how they grow grapes. Very interested in that."
If there’s any bright side to Arizona men’s basketball being banned from the NCAA Tournament, it’s that all eyes will be on the women’s team during their postseason run.
They have a legitimate chance to win a national championship.
Love the way
@ArizonaWBB
fought till the end, but it just never found its rhythm offensively. Cats shot under 35% in four of their last five games. Good news is they have a top-10 recruiting class coming in, including some big-time scorers. They'll be back.
Arizona shot 29% and Aari McDonald had her worst game of the NCAA Tournament, but they still took Stanford to the wire.
Says a lot about Arizona's ability to give absolute effort even when the shots aren't falling.
Aari McDonald was just drafted No. 3 overall by the Atlanta Dream.
That makes her the first Arizona Wildcat ever selected in the first round in the WNBA Draft.
T.J. McConnell began his college career at Duquesne and went undrafted out of Arizona in 2015, but is now entering his seventh season in the NBA and just signed a four-year, $35 million contract with the Pacers.
Good lesson for young athletes to aim high and keep working hard.
Amazing win for
@ArizonaMBB
. They made No. 4 Michigan look like a mid-major. And maybe this is an early overreaction, but I think UA can beat anyone in the country and challenge UCLA for the Pac-12 title. Their personnel looks like a perfect fit for Tommy Lloyd’s uptempo system.
Classic line from Sean Miller on James Akinjo's assist to Azuolas Tubelis for the game-winner: "If it was a pass, it was one heck of a pass. If it was a shot, it was still one heck of a pass."
