Merry Christmas to everyone we have worked alongside this year. What unites all our projects is a shared desire to serve the most vulnerable in our society—more effectively and with greater compassion.. This work is happening against a backdrop where our core values of acceptance, integration and equality can feel as if they are being eroded. However, the recent election, which saw no right-wing representatives gaining seats, reminds us that the loud voices are sometimes only that. When we look at what has been achieved quietly - with perseverance and dedication - a different story emerges. It's a story where humanity triumphs, where people go the extra mile for each other. A story of dedicated people providing compassionate services and tirelessly advocating for better, more equitable policy making. It's one where we keep raising our voices, and take action - against war, for the climate and for equality. We are grateful to be able to support organisations and the workers at the frontline, whether this is through training, the TraumaInformed supports or conference, or organisational supports like research or strategy. It's you who is doing the most challenging (and rewarding) work; remaining present, connected and giving everyday. On behalf of us all - thank you for making this place a better place to be. We look forward to seeing you in 2025, and after a good rest, of working together with you to make things that little bit better. Wishing you a peaceful and joyful Christmas and New Year. Looking ahead to 2025, explore our training opportunities for the coming year: Trauma-Informed Training: SROI Practitioner Training: Certificate in Non-Profit Leadership & Management: #TraumaInformedCare #SROI #LeadershipDevelopment #SocialImpact

Transforming Justice: Creating Trauma-Informed Judicial Systems for All This expert panel explored new trauma-informed approaches within the #legalsystem, emphasising that most justice-involved individuals have endured trauma. Speakers Christina Burke, Barrister and Trauma-Informed Lawyer; Dr. Fiona Donson,@UCC; and Dr. Samantha Morgan-Williams, from @UCC, highlighted the strides being made both in Ireland and internationally to integrate trauma-informed practices across the legal profession. The panel underscored how these approaches support a wide range of clients, including trafficked individuals, the Traveller community, court participants, witnesses, and victims of crime. As one panelist recalled a judge reflecting, “If I had to feel those emotions, I couldn’t do this work,” emphasising the need for structural support for legal professionals to engage compassionately with trauma-affected individuals. The discussion extended through coffee, underscoring that our current system is “not fit for purpose” and advocating for reforms to make justice compassionate and accessible. #TransformingJustice #TraumaInformed #JudicialReform #TIPCON24 #tipcon24 #TransformingJustice #TraumaInformed #JudicialReform

"You can’t teach someone to view the world differently, it’s your unique perspective. You don’t choose it, it’s who we are." Dr. Lhara Mullins, from the University of Galway, led the session inviting particpants to reflect on and challenge their understanding of #autism and #ADHD. Through experiential learning activities, participants gained insights into the challenges and potential trauma faced by neurodivergent individuals in a neurotypical world. #tipcon24 #Neurodivergent #TraumaInformedPractice #InclusiveSupport #AutismAwareness #ADHDSupport #EmpathyInPractice #Neurodiversity

Creating Safe Learning Spaces This panel explored the impact of trauma on students’ behaviour and learning, focusing on interventions that create inclusive and safe #learningenvironments. Ann Swift and Aoife Connaughton discussed the evaluation of the Nurture Programme in @EducateTogether schools. Innovative Nurture Rooms were created for students: "This is the only place I want to talk and you’re the only one I want to talk to." Dr. Annie Cummins and Dr. Judith Butler @MTU_ie presented the #ShamrockModel of Trauma Informed Practice, which helps children co-regulate with adult support, equipping them with tools for self-regulation over time. Dr. Cummins emphasised the historical trauma in schools and highlighted that: "We have state-imposed poverty for people living in #DirectProvision." Eithne Nic Domhnaill and Anne Hayden shared their inspiring work in #Darndale, where Trauma-Informed Practice extended from the school into the community through collaborations between the local boxing gym and community centre. #tipcon24 #SafeLearning #InclusiveSchools #CommunityCollaboration #HealingSpaces #DirectProvision

"My trauma is part of my life and my story, but there are many other things to my life... if you only see someone as their trauma, you’re missing everything else about their life." This powerful panel explored the complex realities and needs of war survivors, featuring personal insights from Iryna Matuzova of @Barnardos_IRL and Talha AlAli a Palestininan psychotherapist and Catherine Tierney from the @IrishHospice Foundation chaired the session, which focused on the importance of compassionate and culturally sensitive care for individuals affected by the trauma of war. Panelists discussed strategies to build trust, offer meaningful support, and honor the full lives of those with traumatic histories. Talha spoke about the nuanced challenges for individuals from war zones, where experiences of fear, checkpoints, and even queues carry lasting stress. 'Now that I'm in Ireland and if I'm in a queue and I hear fireworks and I think it's gunfire.' Talha shared best practices for building trust, which included giving people information about what to expect in service settings, such as waiting times. "Information means empowerment," he noted, explaining how small acts of transparency can provide a sense of safety and control. Iryna Matuzova shared insights into the ongoing generational trauma among Ukrainians. She stressed the importance of patience, as discussing trauma can be viewed culturally as a weakness in Ukraine. Her approach emphasises creating community, offering steady support, and recognising the unique cultural needs of Ukrainian survivors. #tipcon24 #WarTrauma #TraumaSurvivors #TraumaInformedPractice #MentalHealth #SupportingSurvivors

"We need community solidarity, engaged problem solving with communities, and brave leadership to counter the #farright." Far-right groups recruit marginalised individuals by offering identity and belonging, but at the cost of endorsing xenophobic beliefs. Niamh McDonald of the Hope & Courage Collective and Cllr. Daniel Ennis from the Social Democrats equipped participants with evidence-based strategies to become active proponents of #inclusivity, supporting their communities with #resilience and #solidarity. #tipcon24 #we_are_all_love #CounteringFascism #InclusiveValues #HopeAndCourage #BraveLeadership #SocialDemocrats

"Vicarious trauma is unavoidable, and we need to acknowledge this as a sector. When we are aware, we can protect ourselves better." Dr. Kristine Nicki Annunziata from @tcddublin led a vital session offering strategies for managing the emotional and mental impacts of #trauma exposure. #Vicarioustrauma is an occupational reality for those in the sector and highlighted the need to normalise conversations around it to better equip professionals to safeguard their well-being and sustain #compassion in their work. #tipcon24 #VicariousTrauma #TraumaAwareness #MentalHealth #SelfCareInService #TraumaInformedPractice #SustainablePractices

“When trauma gets trapped in the body and people are often not able to speak about it, they can use movements to avoid retraumatisation.” Anita Allen and Colette O'Loughlin from @Barnardos_IRL led a workshop on using #somatic techniques to support #traumarecovery. Participants explored the mind-body connection and effects of body-focused practices, like #breathwork, #movement, and #rhythm, in facilitating healing. This workshop empowered attendees with practical tools to help service users explore the mind-body connection and integrate somatic practices into daily life for ongoing healing. #tipcon24 #SomaticHealing #MindBodyConnection #TraumaInformedPractice #HealingThroughMovement #Barnardos
