The illegal wildlife trade in Indonesia is dominated by the trade in songbirds. During 2021-2023, out of 174,397 live individual animals seized from the illegal wildlife trade, 91.49 per cent were songbirds.  These numbers illustrate how massive the illegal trade in songbirds is in Indonesia.

On February 5, 2025, SKW III Lampung BKSDA Bengkulu and the Highway Patrol (PJR) of the Lampung Police, with full support from FLIGHT, successfully thwarted the smuggling of hundreds songbirds on Palembang-Bakauheni, Lampung.

The Highway Patrol of the Lampung Regional Police, along with Lampung BKSDA, with supports from FLIGHT, successfully thwarted an attempt to smuggle dozens of songbirds of various species on the Terbanggi-Bakauheni Toll Road at KM 63 on Monday, February 3.

East Java Quarantine, supported by FLIGHT, foiled the smuggling of 6,860 songbirds from West Nusa Temggara to Java at Tanjung Wangi Port, Banyuwangi on 1 Feb.

The Cilegon Quarantine and the Merak Port Area Police Sector (KSKP), with support from FLIGHT, successfully prevented an attempt to smuggle hundreds of songbirds of various species at Merak Port, Banten, on January 30, 2025.

On Sunday, 27 January 2025, FLIGHT supported the East Java Quarantine in preventing the smuggling of hundreds of songbirds at Ketapang Port, East Java. The birds were transported by an interprovincial bus and orginated from Bali that are intended to be smuggled into Java Island.

On 20 January 2025, FLIGHT supported the Wan Abdul Rachman Grand Forest Park Management Unit to conduct awareness raising to hundreds of participants representing 43 forest farmer groups living around the Grand Forest Park.

On Nov 14, FLIGHT Advisor Davina Veronica accompanied by Executive Director Marison Guciano presented a certificate and plaque of appreciation to the Director of Certain Crimes of the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Indonesian National Police Brigadier General Nunung Syaifuddin for his commitment in his efforts to fight againts wildlife crime in Indonesia.

On Oct 24th, FLIGHT together with JAAN, UPTD KPHK Tahura WAR and Lampung BKSDA released dozens of birds back into the wild. These birds had been rehabilitated at our center. Before being released, these birds were checked by a vet and cleared to return to their natural habitat

Today we conducted a routine health check to make sure all the birds are in good health. Before being released, the birds at our center first undergo a health check by a veterinarian to make sure they are free of diseases and viruses.

Breaking news. Smuggling of 6,514 Sumatran birds to Java foiled by joint team in South Lampung tonight

On October 1, 2024, Lampung Quarantine, with the support of FLIGHT, foiled an attempt to smuggle more than 1,000 illegal songbirds of various species at Bakauheni Port, Lampung. The birds were to be smuggled in a truck filled with sand from Lampung to Tangerang, Banten.

Information gathered by FLIGHT on the illegal wildlife trade led to the seizure of 6 Goldie’s Lorikeets, 1 Moluccan Eclectus, 1 Chattering Lory, 54 eastern blue-tongued lizard and 4 Reticulated Pythons at Tanjung Priok Seaport by Jakarta Quarantine officers on September 26, 2024

A few days ago, FLIGHT together with Lampung Forestry Service and Lampung BKSDA released birds that had undergone rehabilitation at our center. Before being released, these birds were checked for health and declared ready to return to their natural habitat.

On Sept 17, FLIGHT supported Surabaya Quarantine in thwarting the smuggling of hundreds of songbirds of various species at Ketapang Seaport, East Java. The birds were smuggled from Bali on an inter-provincial bus and were to be illegally traded in bird markets in Java.
