This is the second time this has happened this year, and the third soldier to die from this form of incident.

The NPA in a 55th anniversary statement claimed to have re-established a platoon in the Ilocos region, so the AFP confirming this clash indirectly confirms this.
“This period saw the (re)formation of the first platoon of the NPA in Ilocos.”, according to Ang Bayan.

During the attack, the AFP was reportedly using truck-mounted howitzers supplied by the US and Israel in order to shell the base.
The ATMOS howitzer, developed by Israel's Elbit Systems was also used in the Nagorno-Karabakh war by Azeri armed forces in their war against Armenia.

The NPA released a official communique on this attack, confirming the death and 1 wounded. This was claimed by the NPA-Arnulfo Ortiz Command (Western Samar).
According to the NPA-AOC, they were ambushed while on the way to a lake to shower. One Remington R4 was captured.

A soldier of the 3rd Infantry Batallion, Cpl. Reycon B. Remedio, was killed in a clash with NPA fighters in the area. Part of a NTF-ELCAC launched Community Support Program, he was ambushed with his platoon and shot in the head.

This is the tenth military action the NPA has reported in the month of May. Meanwhile, in the week of May 21 to 28, the NPA reported six different clashes in three provinces (Aurora, Negros Oriental, and Masbate) resulting in a total of 12 AFP soldiers KIA and 2 more wounded.

One soldier of the AFP's 8th Infantry Batallion, Sgt. Marvin O. Calvintos, was killed in a clash with the New People's Army while on patrol. This is the fifth person killed in Samar as of 2024.

5 NPA rebels and a policeman were KIA while another policeman was WIA after a clash at 6:50 AM today. Local sources claim 2 soldiers were KIA, but this is unconfirmed.

On February 20, 2024 - according to the AFP's 7th Infantry Division, a clash occured in Brgy Puangi between 20 forces of the NPA and a forward unit of the division. During the clash, the AFP was reported to have used bomber jets in order to destroy positions held by the NPA.

December 9 and 10 - The NPA claim to have launched two attacks against the AFP in Iloilo, killing 3 soldiers, injuring 3 more and possibly 'several others'.
In Barangay Manaripay, Calinog municipality, three soldiers of the 12th IB were killed and several others injured.

The NPA-Roselyn Jean Pelle Command (NPA North Negros) claimed responsibility for the death of Allan Macasling, the husband of a village councilor. They claim to recovered a .22 rifle and a .357 pistol.

The person killed in fact was a 16 year old minor of the Dulangan Manobo indigenous people group, and had a rifle planted on his body after he was killed by patrolling soldiers in the area.

UPDATE: As of May 22, 2024 - the clashes have stopped, with the NPA retreating to their bases further inland. The AFP claim to have repelled them, while the NPA claim to have retreated safely. A thousand citizens remain in makeshift evacuation facilities in the Dipaculao area.
May 21, 2024 — The NPA has released a statement regarding the recent battle in Dipaculao, denying having sustained any casualties, while claiming to have killed three AFP soldiers.
However, it has also reported that a student was killed in the crossfire in Brgy. Toytoyan.
