UPDATE: According to local sources, the soldier in question was not killed in a encounter with the NPA but from... a /lightning strike/. This is the second time this has happened this year, and the third soldier to die from this form of incident.

Moreover, Sarona was also accused of land-grabbing, intimidation, and withholding the wages of farmworkers. In the raid, the NPA allegedly seized several weapons, including an M2 Carbine, a Colt MK IV, a .357 revolver, and a homemade shotgun. A tractor was also burned.

The NPA in a 55th anniversary statement claimed to have re-established a platoon in the Ilocos region, so the AFP confirming this clash indirectly confirms this. “This period saw the (re)formation of the first platoon of the NPA in Ilocos.”, according to Ang Bayan.

During the attack, the AFP was reportedly using truck-mounted howitzers supplied by the US and Israel in order to shell the base. The ATMOS howitzer, developed by Israel's Elbit Systems was also used in the Nagorno-Karabakh war by Azeri armed forces in their war against Armenia.

UPDATE: The NPA released a official communique on this attack, confirming the death and 1 wounded. This was claimed by the NPA-Arnulfo Ortiz Command (Western Samar). According to the NPA-AOC, they were ambushed while on the way to a lake to shower. One Remington R4 was captured.

On February 20, 2024 - according to the AFP's 7th Infantry Division, a clash occured in Brgy Puangi between 20 forces of the NPA and a forward unit of the division. During the clash, the AFP was reported to have used bomber jets in order to destroy positions held by the NPA.
