🔉🔉 First big win! In response to yearslong efforts of grad student workers at Princeton and across the country, the University has raised stipends $5k for the next academic year.
re-upping this to say: PGSU has officially filed a petition with the NLRB, making us the final ivy league university to file for grad union recognition! we mean it when we say Princeton is UNION CAMPUS!!!!
Graduate students are not gentlemen scholars with independent sources of wealth. We are workers. We rely on our stipends to survive.
#HigherEdWorksBecauseWeDo
What is a $26bn endowment for if not to protect the most vulnerable workers at the university during a crisis? It is the difference between savings for a rainy day and an immoral hoarding of wealth.
Are you a grad student too? Did you know that tens of thousands of your fellow grad students around the country took action this month for better working conditions, pay, healthcare, and more? [1/]
This morning, we delivered our petition to the university! More than 350 Community members are urging the university to offer remote learning and teaching options to the administration. Princeton, act now!
"My grandfather Anthony Taboni is a union worker, my uncle Anthony Taboni is a union worker, and I'm excited to be an Anthony Taboni that is a union worker!"
@AnthonyTaboni
speaks for all of us! 😎 PGSU demands guaranteed, affordable, high-quality housing through graduation!
Harvard Police are suppressing protests in Boston. UCLA are letting the LAPD use their campus for mass arrests. Universities across the country are enmeshed within the police state. Abolish the police and the neoliberal university along with it.

🔉🔉 big news folks! just last night, the Princeton Graduate Student Government voted (22-1, with one abstaining) to publicly support PGSU's unionization effort !!

Unionized grads

It is becoming increasingly clear that it is graduate workers, in coalition with other workers, who will lead the fightback against the financialization of universities.
For the first time in the history of Rutgers University, all three faculty, grad, EOF, and postdoc unions have voted to go on strike. Monday morning, we are ON STRIKE. See you on the picket line.

Our inboxes and chats are filled with international students panicking because of the ICE declaration. We need advice from
@Princeton
and a new President.
In the meantime, we stand with our international student friends and colleagues.

🔉🔉 As it stands, grievance procedures for Princeton grad workers are overseen by the University. Through a union, we'll have access to neutral, third-party arbitration for grievances, and support from UE through the process.
ICE has abandoned its plans to harass international students and universities this Fall leaving many of us asking "What's the point?"
The point is to create a "hostile environment" for immigrants and make them feel unwelcome and under threat.

PGSU stands in solidarity with academic workers at UCSD

WE WON! This week, over 2000 Penn grad workers cast ballots. After eligible votes were tallied, the final count was 1807 to 97. It's official. The majority of eligible voters turned out to the polls. Penn graduate workers have resoundingly declared: WE WANT A UNION AT PENN!
URGENT: In light of COVID-19, we call on Princeton to Stop the Clock for graduate students.
We are joining the many other grad unions around the country calling for this.

@uaw2865
voted against calling a strike authorization vote. We won't have a union-backed ULP strike this quarter. We had a legal framework to fight to get
#COPSOFFCAMPUS
, revert discipline, and get fired people their jobs back. But the Bargaining Team voted against.
We have filed for a union election through the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). In just 23 days, over 2500 graduate workers—the supermajority of graduate workers at Cornell!—have signed union cards, showing we are ready to have formal union representation through CGSU-UE.
📢ATTENTION📢 Princeton grads on the Student Health Plan: The University has ended COVID-related modifications to our insurance as of July 3 without any proper notice. This is completely UNACCEPTABLE.
GRAD STUDENTS, Mark your calendars for
#GSAW24
, starting MONDAY. Stop by for a sweet treat, a swag gift, and to meet the

We thank the two Princeton faculty members,
@ikuziemko
and
@pfrymer
, who explain why they believe unionization would be beneficial for Princeton graduate workers in their public op-ed!
Welcoming more faculty voices in solidarity with grad workers’ unionization wave 🔥
OPINION | Professors Ilyana Kuziemko and Paul Frymer argue that although graduate students may not seem like stereotypical union workers, they face unique vulnerabilities that collective bargaining can help address.
The Graduate School is currently hosting a "community meeting webinar" to give the illusion of workplace democracy. We will be live tweeting to open it up.
We are hosting a Labor Day BBQ to welcome students back for the fall—stop by if you have any questions about PGSU’s unionization campaign!

Austerity is a political choice, that African-American Studies and Gender & Sexuality Studies are the targets demonstrates the reactionary agenda behind these cuts. Stand up, fight back!
We urge our members in Princeton unable to join protests elsewhere to stand up for Black lives and against police violence tomorrow at 2pm at Nassau gates.

THIS WEEK:
--> Will the UAW elect a new president?
--> Will 6,000 Caterpillar workers go on strike?
--> Will the labor movement run out of grad student workers and medical residents to organize?
PGSU is looking to do what we can as an organization to affirm the BLM movement. along with many other grad groups across the country, we are calling for our university to dissociate with our local police department and law enforcement.

Tomorrow, UChicago GSU is hosting a teach-in, with panels on how to organize as a grad union with local community groups and unions. This is the type of necessary solidarity work grad unions must be engaged in.
On Wednesday, GSU members will walk out of our (virtual) workplaces and engage in actions of solidarity, political education, and mutual aid.

Princeton has decided to teach online in the Fall, it has made this decision without consulting those who will do the teaching: graduate workers. That is unacceptable.
