Historian, history blogger, heritage worker. Anthony Woodville biography out now. Article Yorkists under Henry VII in September 2017 Ricardian Bulletin.
There is just one Derby tour left on Saturday 2nd November at 11am, starting at the Bonnie Prince Charlie statue. There’s 2 Belper tours on Friday 25th October and Friday 1st November, starting at 11am at River Gardens car park. Tickets are £12.
Had the best surprise this morning!! My author copies have arrived. Honestly can’t quite believe I can hold it in my hands!! Anthony Woodville: Sophisticate or Schemer is now available for preorders if anyone would like to do so.
Time for one of the best films ever made. No matter what, I could never bore of it. Plus, it‘s about the only film that the historical inaccuracy really doesn’t matter!!
@hellohistoria
My grandad had vascular dementia. I couldn’t see him much when he was bad enough to be in a home because it was too painful. Still, he discovered a love of pizza he had always refused to try.
Now I’ve signed the contract, I’m delighted to announce that I’ll be writing a biography of Anthony Woodville for
@amberleybooks
. It will be out at some point in 2023. I am so excited as this has been a dream of mine for a very long time now, still can’t quite believe it!
Having a break inside the walls of Ludlow Castle this weekend in a beautiful and peaceful apartment. The view out the window this morning is of the lodgings part of the castle, probably where Anthony Woodville lived when he was here.
My line manager took this lovely photo of me yesterday at the Visitor Centre at Masson Mills ready to promote the book launch. You would never guess that her very cute but destructive toddler was in the background ruining our chocolate bar display. 😂
Interesting fact, when the coving was taken down for the ceiling’s restoration around 2000, an original 17th century playing card was found hidden underneat.
I’m not here to mention things on the Princes in the Tower as people may already guess my opinion. I’m just here as an archive worker to be nerdy and very happy that mostly no white gloves have been used. 😂
Someone’s just told me that the fact I don’t like Henry VIII is controversial. Please tell me I’m not the only one who doesn’t like the guy! Although I do like Horrible Histories version. (The quote below is definitely my mantra)
What's everyone's historical bug-bear? Like if you see it you want to upturn what ever book you're reading? I have....many, but one that really grinds my gears is the claim that 'historically people didn't love their children because of high mortality rates'
So this is the best tweet/post (whatever you call it these days). Thank you so much to everyone, the support means so much!! After 9 years of research and dreaming of holding my own book on Anthony Woodville, it all feels so surreal.😭❤️

3 months to go until publication day for my first history book 'Anthony Woodville: Sophisticate or Schemer?'. Can't believe it's now so close to being out there after researching it for nearly 9 years. Currently on preorder from book retailers, Amazon and

Many of us voted to leave (including me and many others I know) and are proud to wear a poppy to remember all who died in all wars for this country. It’s not a political motive, it’s to remember and ensure the horrors they saw are never forgotten. It shouldn’t be politicised.
My next Georgian dress for the Jane Austen Festival in September is nearly complete, thanks to my sister’s amazing sewing talents! It’s gorgeous! Don’t envy her having to do hers and mum’s next though. 😅
I am pleased to announce that I can now start to advertise my book launch! It will be at Masson Mills Visitor Centre in Derbyshire on Saturday 16th March between 11am and 1pm. The best bit is that it will be free. My book will be available to purchase, as well as refreshments.
In honour of
#MuseumSelfieDay
, time to share one of my favourites. Me trying on Regency era clothes in Bath Fashion Museum. It was taken in 2019, an incredibly crappy year for me, but little did I know that experience started an obsession with the Jane Austen Festival in Bath.
The last 6 months have been horrendous. I have had what makes me who I am called into question. Then the night before my book launch, I’m made aware of typos in my book. I’m not saying they’re not there, but these (minor) mistakes, and some semantics have made my book awful. 1/2
Spent this morning at work crying in the archive store room because I came across letters written during World War Two between sweethearts. He sadly died and I found the letter he’d written to her in case he died, along with an enclosed poem. My goodness. 😭😭
At the end of last year, I set up a pantry shop at my church to give discounted food to those in need. I don’t post about it as it’s a personal venture, but our customer base has grown loads. Our donations don’t keep up, but today we had our biggest yet. Thanks to the donors!
I want to wish everyone, whether you celebrate it or not, a very Merry Christmas and may 2024 be much better than 2023 was. Thank you to everyone for their love and support this year with the book handed in and the blog. May your Christmas look like this wassail party!🎄🎅❤️
My dad last night shared of when he went to collect his Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Prince Philip talked with him about wargaming. He loved that dad had Waterloo era ones, but literally said mine are bigger than yours. 😂
@benwillbond
Thank you so much to you and everyone else. Ghosts has been a constant in my life through a very difficult 5 years. Thank you for being there in it, keeping me laughing and smiling when I haven’t felt like it. ❤️
Been into Norwich today. Saw the Paston’s House, which was rebuilt following a fire in early 1500s (the one before the fire would have been visited by Anthony Woodville), and the Stranger’s Hall an old merchant house dating back to the 1200s. Also met up with
@Andrew_Rothe_
.
The view from the window is wonderful. Second time staying in Ludlow Castle, love it. After a quick walk round town, so delighted to have my book in the window with an advert for the book signing tomorrow at Castle Bookshop.
Jane Austen was read by soldiers fighting and wounded in World War One as a relief from the agony of war. Find out how her writing was used for escapism during this dark period in this post from the

I’ll be doing this tomorrow and so far around 20 people will be in attendance. Might not sound a lot, but for a small scale fundraiser it is. A bit nervous but also excited.
I'm pleased to announce that my next talk will be in July on Anthony Babington and the Babington Plot, held to fundraise for the pantry shop I help run for those in need at the moment. Can't wait to share this with people.
I would love for my
#historyblog
to get 2,000 views by the end of the year, as it’s one of the only things keeping me sane this year. I also want to thank you all for the support with it. Honestly it means so much to me ❤️
The first full rough draft of the book is done, now to get the editing done before 1 June deadline with the publishers. I can't quite believe it. After 7 years of researching Anthony Woodville, I'm this close to getting it all finished. It's a strange feeling!
So after what’s felt like months of hell, I finally got told I have got a new job!! The best part it’s still at the lovely Derbyshire Record Office, but with more hours and I’ll be assisting on an archive project for 2 years. Watch this space people!!
#finally
Phew, well that's it, the book manuscript is now finished with, ready to send to the publishers on Monday. I can't quite believe it. Thank you to
@amberleybooks
for the opportunity. At times I thought I wouldn't get to this point, but thank God I did!
Today I finally started putting together bits of my talk on Anthony Woodville for the local branch of the Richard III Society I'm doing in a few months time. Still can't believe I'm doing it!
After a month of job uncertainty due to council fund issues, I’m pleased to say that I’m starting as a Visitor Centre Assistant at Richard Arkwright’s Masson Mills near Cromford tomorrow. After dealing with archives relating to Derbyshire’s mills, feels like full circle.
Whilst it was too late to say hello to Richard III in the Cathedral when I did my talk for the Leicestershire branch of Richard III Society last night, I said hello to other things of his instead.

in 1483, Anthony Woodville met with Richard, Duke of Gloucester on friendly terms at Northampton, whilst on the way to London with their young nephew, Edward V. Edward had supposedly moved onto Stony Stratford, but the Woodvilles’ home of Grafton was 5 miles away.
With exciting updates on my biography of Anthony Woodville, including a beautiful cover, I just had to share it for all my blog followers in this latest

post.

Copies of the book have arrived for taking up to Northern Dales Richard III Group study day on Saturday. These are available to purchase but are unfortunately cash only. First time taking copies out into the wild myself.
Got my first ever paid talk booked in for February at a local history group for the next town over from where I live. They’ve said if it goes well, there’s the potential to do more with them. Can’t quite believe it. Thank you to everyone who’s shared about my ideas for talks. ❤️
Just been booked by the group of the Richard III Society I attend for June. I’ve been a member of the Society for 20 years this year, since I was 9 and have always been the youngest member. Wow, just feels so surreal!! 😅
Thank you to everyone who responded to this. I wasn’t expecting such a lovely reaction, but wow. There are so many of you, I haven’t been able to reply to everyone. Just wanted to say a massive thank you to everyone! ❤️ I’m going to try and work on my next book idea. Any clues?
The last 6 months have been horrendous. I have had what makes me who I am called into question. Then the night before my book launch, I’m made aware of typos in my book. I’m not saying they’re not there, but these (minor) mistakes, and some semantics have made my book awful. 1/2
Been a terrible year but there are two things I‘m proud of: 1. finishing my biography on Anthony Woodville after 9 years (next year) promising myself I would write on him. 2. helping to feed nearly 200 people through the pantry shop. A pub is paying for some Christmas dinners too
The best Christmas present I received was a personal and very encouraging message from
@sixteenthCgirl
. Was crying happy tears over my breakfast as she has been my history hero for a long time now. Honestly meant the absolute world to me. ❤️❤️
In Ludlow again and I have missed the place. Good great and lovely people. The local bookshop has also already said he wants to stock my Anthony book when finished and the local U3A want me to do a talk. It’s going great!!
Had a message from my Auntie earlier, who isn't into history really, say she'd seen a load of books relating to Richard III in a charity shop and thought they'd be useful for the book. She was so pleased to remember which king it was who was related to my research. 😊
A massive thank you to the 25-30 people who turned up to my talk on Anthony Babington talk and book sale to raise money for feeding people in need at this time. We raised £176 and I had lovely feedback from everyone saying they enjoyed it.
Phew, just given my best attended talk yet, well over 40 people! It was a short talk on the history of my work place, Masson Mills and Richard Arkwright who built it. First one I've given for work and quite proud of how it went. Next book launch on Saturday!
Been asked to give my first ever in person talk in four weeks. Mostly excited but at the same time quite nervous. They don't have the facilities for a PowerPoint, so will have to use notes. Any tips guys?!
Just had an email to confirm that the Anthony Woodville biography manuscript has just started in the editing stage. Feels so strange and is a mixture of nervous excitement! 😅
To round our trip to the Barnard Castle area, took a trip to the Neville’s Raby Castle and Staindrop Church. Lovely people at both places. Big thank you to the people who stopped behind from the church service to tell us some of the history. 😊
The best Christmas present I think I’ve ever got is this: an Anthony Woodville Christmas decoration for my history tree. Literally screamed when I opened it!! A VERY massive thank you to my work colleague and friend who got a local shop to make me this. 😍😍
A kind audience member from Saturday sent me a photo of the local Teesdale paper. Yes, you can see my absolute joy of being next to such auspicious company!
I've had a few people ask me today who Anthony Woodville is, it's great to see people interested! He was the brother of Elizabeth Woodville, Edward IV's Queen. He stayed out of a lot of things but he was a knight, jouster, book translator and head of the household of Edward V.
With recent research, I now have a favourite historical heroine, Charlotte, Countess of Derby. She defended her homes in Lancashire and on the Isle of Man for the Royalist cause.
So incredibly excited that I have been booked to talk about my old dissertation topic of criminal biographies of pirates and highwaymen in November. I’d you’d have told me in 2017 when I was writing it, I’d never have believed I would now be sharing it with an audience!
My research lately has focused on Elizabeth Scales, Anthony Woodville’s first wife, and her father, Lord Scales. It’s such a shame we don’t know a lot about her, but I would like to share with you all what I do know about her at some point. Would that be something interesting?
Working on a new talk on one of my favourite historical women: Eleanor Coade and her artificial stone business. Can't wait to share her story with more people!
I was so glad that I finally braved it and made this page this year. Not long after I put this up, I was booked for my first ever paid talk in February. Fingers crossed it goes well!
I am very sad to hear about the passing of Prince Philip. The Queen and Prince Philip have held a place in my family as the married on the same day my mum was born. Regardless of how you feel about the royal family, it must be a huge loss for the Queen especially. 😭
In a few days I’ll be doing my first ever paid talk at a local history group near me. As it’s on my research into Napoleonic prisoners of war, which I trialled online this week, with a positive reception, I hope the same for this in person version will be just as ok. 🤞
I’ve finally had a job offer so as of the next few weeks I’ll finally be working solely in the heritage sector and I’ll be getting the keys to the new house with my fiancé 😁
Been a difficult year all round, both personally and professionally. I seriously can't wait to get rid of this year (but feel like I've said that for the last 5 years really). Some good points: doing talks, went to my first Regency ball and did the Jane Austen Festival again.
Sadly my beloved Uncle passed away this morning.💔We were lucky enough to visit him yesterday, with work allowing me to go. He was like a father to my older sisters when my mum was a single parent. Simply one of the best. I’ll be taking some time away from here because of this.
Probably a strange request, but has anyone read Philipa Gregory's, The White Queen? My final chapter of the book will talk about literary and television versions of Anthony Woodville, and I would like to hear people's opinion of him from anything like this.

Watched the first episode of Renegade Nell on Disney+ yesterday. As a lover of tales of highwaymen, I was so excited when this series was announced. I was not disappointed at all! Nell’s uniform also reminded me of Christian Davies, who fought in the army, earning her own pension
Anthony Woodville’s signature is in one a copy of the collected works of Christine’s, now held by the British Library. He inherited it from his mother, Jacquetta.
I’m not entirely sure why, but I’ve had a lot of new followers recently. Anyway, thank you all for the follow!❤️Look out for my research on Anthony Woodville and posts from my history blog! Also lots of general history and archive based content.
#OTD
in 1483, Anthony Woodville was executed at Pontefract Castle along with his nephew, Richard Grey, and Thomas Vaughan. They were arrested months before because of a Woodville Plot. I believe Anthony was innocent, which I hope to show in my biography on him out in Spring 2024.
#OTD
in 1477, William Caxton printed the first dated book in English and printed in England. The Dictes and Sayings of the Philosophers was translated by Anthony Woodville, brother of Elizabeth Woodville. An illustration of Anthony presenting a copy to Edward IV still survives.
Been 6 weeks since I started my new job at Masson Mills. Felt a little out of my depth at times learning to use coffee machines, dishwashers, assisting conferences etc. Today customers wanted to know history things and took bookmarks with link to my blog. Honestly made my day!❤️
Happy

! Here are a selection of my favourite women that I’ve researched over the years. Margaret Cavendish, Duchess of Newcastle, Sarah Walker, Eleanor Coade and Annie Oakley.
Just got home from one of the best evenings ever, seeing one of my favourite historians,
@DrJaninaRamirez
. Thank you so much for such a lovely and informative evening. Honestly made me so happy!! 🥰🥰
