Gerald Ford was the first president to acknowledge Black History Month. It had been decades in the making, and President Ford brought it to the finish line and gave it the spotlight it deserved. Read @Ford_Library director Brooke Clement's write up on how it all came about:

#PresidentFord’s funeral services spanned several days and locations from west to east coast in early January 2007. The crowds at the #GrandRapids, MI farewell showed Ford’s impact on the nation: about 75,000 residents lined the streets in the cold January weather to welcome him “home,” and around 57,000 waited for hours, day and night, in a 2-mile line downtown to pay their last respects at the Ford Presidential Museum. Donald Rumsfeld’s eulogy for President Ford at the Grace Episcopal Church service in East Grand Rapids, MI, sums him up: “Jerry Ford was different. I suspect that when he looked in the mirror even after he became president, he (still) saw a citizen and a public servant.” How can we pay our respects to President Ford today, 18 years later? Be like him: humble, honest. hard-working,. #GeraldFord

Farewell, Jimmy Carter. Your passing today marks the end of an incredible life spent serving others. A Statement from the Ford Family: “With President Carter’s passing, the world has lost a great champion of human rights, a wise mediator of international peace, and a passionate proponent of the wellbeing, equality, and just treatment of all people. Though respected adversaries in the national political arena, our father’s and President Carter’s personal friendship grew and deepened through their shared faith and common vision for the healing and strengthening of our nation. Our Ford family celebrates the extraordinary life and legacy of President Carter. We send our love, prayers, and condolences to the Carter family.” #JimmyCarter Image: Presidents Carter and Ford co-hosting an All-Democracies Conference in 1983.
