As someone who wrote a history of the Emergency, I can say that what’s happening in India now is much worse: More systematic; no use of even the figleaf of law; media under control; stormtroopers on the ground to support a Govt of lies and hate.

as full scale communal riot should be reminded of Nazi violence tagged as communist-Nazi clash in the 1930s. It is an anti-Muslim pogrom. Period.
As India becomes an authoritarian Hindu rashtra, with police, courts, admn, media acting as the RSS’s willing executioners, dissenters killed or imprisoned, Kashmir muzzled, Muslims & Dalits lynched, the Emergency tyranny has been left far behind.
Princeton High School (PHS) students came today to the encampment to express their solidarity with the Princeton University students. Very encouraging to the hunger strikers now in their 7th day!
Police violence in India is rooted in its British colonial origins as a coercive force to control the population. Us vs them is written into its history; it’s anti-Dalit and anti-Muslim character is a further twist in its history as a force of domination.
The brazenness with which the state has mobilized its resources for Ram Mandir is staggering and obnoxious and signals what is to come from this RSS state. Shame on those liberals who are lamenting this now but welcomed Modi in 2014.
Rahul Gandhi has emerged as a huge, principled leader. Priyanka, and Akhilesh have too risen in people’s estimation. Compared to the, the BJP leaders appear as bigots, mean spirited, and vacuous!
“So far as the refugees are concerned... we accept as citizens anybody who calls himself a citizen of India.” Jawaharlal Nehru, Constituent Assembly, 1949.
I’ve always hated the term “peace process” with respect to Palestine & Israel. Indians didn’t call the struggle with the British a peace process, nor did the Algerians against France. Peace process portrays the issue a border dispute when it is colonial occupation.
Prabir Purukayastha arrested under UAPA! His unlawful detention in 1975 is nothing compared to this! Mother of Democracy? More like the graveyard of democracy.
Hunger Strike by Princeton students for divestment and against genocide in Gaza enters the sixth day. The callous disregard of the Princeton authorities is shameful.
Shaheen Bagh represented that rare moment in history between no more & not yet (Arendt), an opening when speech & action enacted a new vision of freedom, different from mere liberation from constraints. No wonder the Govt has gone after its activists with vengeance.
In 1975, Indira cited a rule to justify her recommendation of emergency without a Cabinet approval. Now too a rule cited to justify the revocation of President’s rule in Maharashtra without cabinet meeting. Past & present looking more and more similar!
@anuragkashyap72
Raising voice against a book is not banning it. Targeting a publisher for publishing a book without vetting or peer review is not banning it. Protesting against an event presided by Kapil Mishra to promote anti-Muslim propaganda styled is not against FoE.
For the past five years or so, political analysts have despaired about a counter-narrative to BJP, imploring in the Congress in vain to provide one. The protests have provided one, and it is powerful and organic.

routinely publishing BJP election propaganda. Today, a full page interview with Amit Shah. Who needs censorship when you have pliant newspapers?
Fact-finding report points Delhi violence finger at
@AmitShah
The report breaks new ground by listing several specific instances of violence and highlights several identical FIRs and confessions cited by the police as well as complaints of torture
You’ve lost the moral right to invoke the Emergency to protect your government and party’s blood-stained record. From now on people will cite Gujarat 2002 & Delhi 2020 as the benchmark of oppression.
We respect independence of judiciary. Record of Congress in compromising independence of judiciary, superseding judges even of Supreme Court during Emergency is well known.They rejoice only when the judgment is of their liking otherwise raise questions on the institutions itself.
Modi’s claim to equal Nehru’s record of returning three time as PM rings hollow when you consider that Nehru became PM three times with the Congress retiring in majority all those those times. That has eluded Modi. He can never equal Nehru, never!
Now the pro-Israeli lobby is conclusively defining intifada as a call for genocide? Really? And these presidents of universities cannot bring them to say that calls for uprising against oppression is legitimate free speech? The settler-colonial lobby must be defeated!
Any chance that the CAA could be amended along the following lines?
“So far as the refugees are concerned... we accept as citizens anybody who calls himself a citizen of India.” Jawaharlal Nehru, Constituent Assembly, 1949.
Is there a limit to the Israeli cruel vengeance? No Western outrage over this?
Palestinian men stripped to underwear and paraded through Gazan square by IDF
I get it that Israel is on a vengeful, scorched earth ethnic cleansing drive. This is not new, it is part of the settler-colonial regime. The US veto of a ceasefire resolution is clearly signals that Biden and the Democratic Party are full participants in war crimes.
The Fix is on?
According to SY Quraishi, ex-CEC commissioner, the change in voting % days after the initial data at the end of the day is unexplainable since the EVM is sealed and locked at day end. So, how the change ? The SC also dropped the ball.
A bright undergraduate read Arundhati Roy’s intro to Ambedkar’s Annihilation of caste & asked if she was right in calling Gandhi’s assassination a fratricidal killing. I said no, it was hyperbolic, shorn of historical context, politically paralyzing.
So glad to learn that my work in “Bonded Histories” on the history of the Dalit Bhuinya laborers has sparked research on marginalized Dalit communities in Bihar, often in Hindi. There’s nothing more satisfying.
@AshaRangappa_
This explanation would hold water if the US weren’t an imperial power. So even with the end of the bad old days of the 50-70s, there were still black sites and renditions inspite of “oversight” in place. /1
@AshaRangappa_
2/ Your explanations on the necessity of intelligence ignore the CIA’s actual history in US imperialism, which didn’t end in the 70s. Without that history, the thread reads like propaganda for US imperial power. End
It is astounding that the US admin, police, universities are willing to upend democracy, the right to peaceful protest and civil disobedience traditions to protect a foreign government’s - Israel ‘s - genocidal war!Does AIPAC money go that far?
Not content with capturing institutions, the BJP is also distorting the electoral system. Why? Because like all dictatorships, it’s unsure of public opinion as it can’t trust the godi media. So, it deploys ever greater intimidation.
If Biden thinks that delivering a pitiful US humanitarian assistance to Gazans who will be killed by US supplied bombs is going to win him votes, he is living in a fool’s paradise. He will pay a price for enabling genocide, and rightly so.
Inviting Shazia Ilmi to deliver a keynote address is different from inviting her to be a panelist. Protesting against it is not cancel culture but a familiar right-wing ploy while practicing systematic oppression of Muslims, Dalits, and dissent. Shame on JLF!
@GenMhayden
It’s very revealing that Trump has appointed the worst of the worst, the most corrupt, the biggest liars and sycophants as his top officials.
Bodies and citizens. Panel at Princeton University. Rohit De, Suchitra Vijayan, Sahana Ghosh, and Dina Siddiqi. Packed room. But Bhakts came in force to disrupt but failed!
Time to remember Ramdhari Singh Dinkar’s poem composed to celebrate the formation of the constitutional republic in 1950, and recited by JP in 1975: Sinhasan khali karo ki Janata aati hai (Vacate the throne, for the people are coming)
Orban in Hungary packed the courts to gain compliance. BJP in India hasn’t had to do it; the courts just surrendered to its will on Kashmir, CAA, the detention of Sudha Bharadwaj, Varavar Rao & countless others, and now Rajasthan.
Excerpts and reviews of Obama’s memoir suggests it’s completely self serving. Campaigned on “yes we can” & governed with Wall Street insiders & Dem establishment. He’s at least partially responsible for Trump. Only knew how to win himself & destroyed the party.
1.8 million Gazans Displaced; nearly 15000 Killed; now those displaced from the north to south being bombed. Is there a limit to Israeli crimes? And who will impose it ?
I understand why the BJP goes after the Gandhi family, but why do the others, opposed to the HINDUTVA brigade, also pile on the family as if it is obligatory to do so in order to critique the BJP?
There’s straight line from Advani-Vajpayee to Modi, just as there is one from Nixon’s southern strategy, Bush, Tea Party to Trump. All birds of a feather.

In these bleak times, my graduating Princeton students provide a ray of hope. I'm heartened by the languages they have learned & their openness to new knowledge and thinking. As they venture out into the world, I have nothing but confidence in them. So young but so inspiring!
Liars! Sitharaman says HAL/Dassault deal for 126 Rafales with tech transfer & Make-in-India of 108 Rafales by HAL fell through because HAL& Dassault couldn't work together under UPA. Totally false says Eric Trappier, CEO of Dassault. HAL/Dassault deal was withdrawn by Modi govt
@seemay
No comfort in seeing 1975 repeated in 2021. As illegitimate now as then. It also makes sense that the GOI never issued a no objection certificate in 2016 to enable me to conduct research on the Emergency under Fulbright.
The media is so myopic and their ignorance is so infuriating. They keep talking about how this only happens in a Third World country when the US itself engineered coups there! Do we need to list them?
The outrage was against the event with Kapil Mishra as also against the publisher. Given the authors and the publicity, questions arose: Did the book undergo peer review? Did it meet standards of fact-checking? These questions do not pertain FoE.
It would be fine if the book was in fiction category. Presenting propaganda as fact & demonising victims doesn't fall under right to offend. Lies were being published, they were rightly called out and the book was rightly withdrawn
Edward Said asked during the Iraq war: When will we resist? People are coming out in hundreds of thousands against the Israeli genocidal campaign & its Western enablers.
