Bizarre catch of the day just now: a Woodlark in the bottom of a mist-net deep inside the Obs garden - presumably dived in to avoid a predator (has been a lot of Merlin activity this mrng). Only the second Woodlark ever ringed at the Bill.

There's not a hope of us keeping something like this quiet at the Bill in April so please be aware that there are singing/apparently paired Cirl Buntings currently about the island. Cirl Bunting has Schedule 1 protection so give them a wide berth and DON'T linger near them

Certainly wasn't expecting a North American vagrant this morning: a Stephens' Gem trapped overnight at the Obs. Seemingly the 9th for Britain and bearing in mind the weather conditions presumably most likely a genuine arrival across the Atlantic rather than a dodgy import

Doesn't take long before someone totally ignores requests to not enter the fields to get closer to the Long-eared Owl - it's really very simple: if you haven't got permission from the land owner to enter the fields please just stick to the footpaths

More typical behaviour from the bird photography community: these two boneheads are within metres of an active Peregrine eyrie and have flushed the birds which are flying around calling constantly. They then ignore requests to leave the site - unbelievable.

Interesting ringed Chiffchaff from the Obs mist-nets just now: turns out to have been first ringed here as a migrant on the same date - 17th March - in 2017. Really rare to catch passing migrants in more than one year.
