mov is going to be faster generally, unless the CPU fuses the xor and the inc into a single microcode instruction. mov register, immediate - 1 cycle xor register, register - 1 cycle inc register - 1 cycle however modern CPUs have fused instructions like store+ increment which also take 1 cycle. So on a modern CPU architecture they just might be the same performance wise, > 99% percentile.
