Happy #Imbolc! Soon, pollinators will start emerging from hibernation. As they appear, our native plants begin to bloom in succession, providing nectar & pollen at just the right moment 💚 Many trees flower early, like this willow (📷Thomas Cuffe)

Q: What should our business consider if planting native trees to support pollinators-biodiversity? A: Right tree, right place, right space. Choose Irish provenance trees which will flower at the correct time of year for our pollinators. @biodatacentre

Create a pond and retain ditches. Marginal and submerged native plants are good, as some hoverfly larvae live in water. Keeping the water clean is essential, so make sure silt, fertiliser and pesticide run-off cannot enter ditches and ponds. #farmlandbiodiversity

Holly & Ivy berries are abundant at this time of year- a source of food for birds who in turn will disperse their seeds. Male & female Holly flowers grow on different plants & need pollinators to help them reproduce. Another reason to be thankful for these wonderful insects 💚🐝
