That one is easy. Be there for them, be patient, make sure they know losses happen (and you should learn from them) but there will be more games. I had all of that growing up, and I'm forever grateful to my parents for their love and support.

a good thread on a topic I think about often. i happily did some amateurish stat work for the gcl for our comms team, but chess would benefit greatly from a proper reliable centralized source of data.
Why is it so insane(ly difficult) for chess to have an independent stats site in the way that many other sports do? Here’s a thread that no one asked for, informed by my own research into this problem . 1/15.
