So, apparently Ian Flynn's writing in Sonic Frontiers was so powerful that the English - Japanese translators at Sega JP couldn't really handle it because it was like nothing they'd translated before and as a result the game sounds google translated in Japanese.

For the record, I don't think this will ruin the game for the JP fanbase. Japanese fans are KNOWN for putting out translation patches in record time in cases like these.

Languages are heavily rooted in the cultures they come from and thus it is almost impossible to translate a text from one language into another without trying to change cultural context to maintain the original meaning of the dialogue. THAT'S what localization is.

"Literal" translation is something people just say, but from an academic and practical standpoint, it simply does not exist. Languages are not like file formats, where you just change some encoding and everything displays exactly the same.

What happened with Japanese Sonic Frontiers is actually a case where the translators did not localize *enough*. They maintained English sentence structures in Japanese and as a result Sonic and Amy sound like they ate a Japanese grammar textbook for breakfast.

When you translate you ALWAYS have to make creative choices, and those creative choices will determine, how well what the original text conveyed arrives at the new audience. If you try to *not* localize, you WILL fail at this goal, because localization is NECESSARY to convey.
