Just had a message from someone saying that a “reputable publisher” is asking him for £3k to publish his debut. Legit publishers will NEVER charge an author to publish their work, and it makes me really sad to think of writers being taken advantage of like that. And cross. 😖

I always think looking at the Sunday Times lists is a good way for authors to understand importance of the “hook” or USP of their novels! As publishers, being able to sum up books like this plays a huge part in how we sell them to readers & looking at these you can see examples.

This! I am SUCH a fan of commercial fiction (I should be seeing as I publish it and write it myself!) and am not a fan of the snobbery that still exists around it as a term. Selling a lot of books and having a relatable, accessible, gripping plot is not a bad thing...! 🤭
Writers: "Commercial" is not a dirty word. There is no shame in selling your work. It doesn't mean you've sold your soul, or compromised your talent. Loving your work doesn't mean you shouldn't get paid. And getting paid allows you to keep on doing what you love.
