Finally posted - our structures that explain directionality control in large serine integrases! Read all about how these amazingly clever molecular swivels are controlled: https://t.co/8OqRbG50Fp Great work by postdoc Heewhan Shin and many thanks to collaborator Femi Olorunniji.

Large serine integrases (LSIs) catalyze unidirectional site-specific DNA recombination reactions, yet those reactions are reversed by the presence of a cognate recombination directionality factor...

Positive observation for the day: when I went grocery shopping yesterday, an elderly man with a walker was crossing against the light, slowly. NOT A SINGLE ONE of the many cars he was holding up honked. Humans do have a good side.

Supercoiling toys for students in my grad class. Parts from Amazon - 2 rolls of 4mm tubing for jewelry (2mm hole) and a package of old-style bead key chains, chopped up, to provide breakable backbone bonds that swivel.

We had fun with these models at the South Side Science Festival today. So many smart kids in Chicago!
@PhoebeARice and I developed an outreach module using paper models to share our passion for nucleic acids and structural biology. Now, you can use it too! #UChicagoBMB #structuralbiology #biochemistry #womeninstem Check it out: https://t.co/EIN6FJkimd

8 YEARS IN A ROW. There’s truly something for everyone in the City of Big Shoulders so it comes as no surprise here that Chicago is once again the best big city in the nation. Couldn’t be prouder.

Time for a positive random observation: when I see the migrant families who are staying in the shelter near my place, the adults are usually paying more attention to their kids than to their phones.

Do you think that doing science costs the same anywhere around the world? The answer is NO! and as illogical as it may sound, it costs more to do science in low-resourced countries than in high income countries. A couple of examples from my own experience as a PI in Mexico (1/🧵)

An experimental census of retrons, now published in @NatureBiotech. We synthesized more than a hundred new retrons and put them through their paces, improved recombineering rates and precise editing in human cells up to 40%.
