Nationalization is the socialist position. Breaking them up would be a step forward but its the program of middle class progressivism (i.e. E Warren). We can vote for legislation to break them up, but shouldn't elected socialists use their platform to promote public ownership?
Daily reminder that Ticketmaster is a monopoly, it’s merger with LiveNation should never have been approved, and they need to be reigned in.
Break them up.
I forgot about this, but I can attest this is a true story, I was there and witnessed it! Seattle Anarchists were very angry at us for fighting for Occupy to take up concrete demands in 2011 and then running in 2012 & 2013 elections
I volunteered for her once in 2013, was making calls when suddenly a man in a dirty pink bunny suit walked into the campaign office, knocked over a bookshelf, & ran off
I asked "what the hell?" & they said "oh it's the Anarchists trying to sabotage us because we're electoralists"
All socialists should support this call to end US sanctions on North Korea. However this statement contains significant political weakness of omission - what it doesnt say. Nowhere does it in any way politically distance DSA from the N Korean regime. This raises two problems🧵/ 1
DSA IC calls on the Biden administration to lift the 2017 Trump-era instilled travel ban on North Korea and end the decades-long devastating economic sanctions in order to move towards formally ending the Korean War.

We need our own Congressional Socialist Caucus under the direction of DSAs elected leadership, with it's own profile & policies, independent from the Progressive Caucus
AOC and Bush voting differently from Tlaib and Sanders on this issue demonstrates that they aren't working together effectively. To take on the ruling capitalist class, our movement must advance beyond the insufficient and informal "Squad" grouping.
Guilty as charged ⚡️ We will work to hold DSA electeds accountable to represent the positions & policies that DSA members democratically adopt. Socialist electeds should serve the socialist movement, not the other way around 🌹
Unions told us to support Clinton &
+ Biden rather than Bernie in 2016 & 2020 primaries 😲 Union leaders told their members to approve the railway TA (the one that the members then voted down) 😱 Socialist politics =/= automatically doing what union leaders tell you to do🌹
Good message on abortion, but it's nothing outside the Democratic mainstream. Bush also proactively highlights working with Biden in this ad. There is no significant difference here with AOCs politics, but DSA left has raised zero political concerns. 1/2

failing to politically separate ourselves from N Korean govt assists our opponents in smearing us as supporters of the horrendous N Korean dictatorship & pushing the narrative that socialism = dictatorship. To combat this, when DSA makes statements opposing US imperialism / 3
#1
to succeed in ending these imperialist sanctions we need to win political support from US workers & broader public. Our ability to achieve this is severely limited if the call to end sanctions is seen to be linked with support for the N Korean regime (given its character) / 2
Class struggle unionism > class collaborationist business unionism. To rebuild labor we need to return to the successful strategies socialists deployed to build the CIO in the 1930s, IWW etc. Socialism gets the goods!
Very courageous statement from the 18 year old Israeli who is refusing to serve in the IDF. While I don't fully agree with the politics - more radical humanist & left populist than Marxist - I hope his statement will inspire many more to resist within Israel! ✊️

Absolutely true. We need to challenge the unofficial philosophy of DSA ( pragmatism) and build a culture that centers politics & is rooted in Marxist theory
Not good! Unfortunately confirms case of many Marxists in DSACon2021 debate on internationalism.
@DSA_Intl_Comm
silence on repression of HK unions is consistent w/logic of convention decision - refusing to raise *left* criticisms of forces in conflict w/US imperialism (like CPC)
1 correction: Im sure no one from the campaign said "we're electoralists." Marxists are against "electoralism" (fetishizing elections) but support running in elections to build support for socialism, organize etc. Probably just said "their angry at us for running in elections"
Don't agree with North Star that we are ultra left, but appreciate the plug for Lenin's Left Wing Communism. Hope more comrades read & study it. BTW the pamphlet argues against ultra leftism & the kind of reformist popular frontist politics of North Star
Response to some of the feedback. This statement is issued in an context, not a vacuum. It is ignoring the elephant in the room to pretend we can only oppose US sanctions & not address the concerns of regular people in the US about the N Korean regime. We should be calling on / 1
Finally! To those who say this is "moralistic." What is your political strategy to win support in the US for ending the sanctions? U seem to have a moral rigidity against any acknowledgment of the repressive character of the DPRK govt. Practically, we will be more effective / 5
While I'm not fully convinced of Eric's position, this is a good example of the kind of mature & nuanced argumentation that all sides of DSA should be making (vs hyperbolic claims of "union busting"). Debating in this way, regardless of the outcome on the specific issue 1/3
"We are no supporters of the N Korean govt, they are repressing their people. But US sanctions only punishes ordinary people of N Korea, the leaders are fine. We have enough problems here at home, bring the US troops home. Let the Korean people deal with their own government" / 4

This is a terrible austerity deal that needs to be energetically opposed and voted against by all socialists and progressives in Congress. Will they after 2 years of talking about how they support Biden? 👀
Summary of deal as I understand it:
— Debt ceiling raised 2 years
— Domestic programs frozen next year, up 1% ‘25. Inflation-adjusted cut
— Boosts defense, VA $
— Some tightening of work requirements on TANF, SNAP
— Energy permitting (details tbd)
— Claw back some new IRS $
all DSA members in Congress to publicly join us in opposing the sanctions on N Korea. They should speak up on it! And the 1st thing they will be hit with in the corporate media is "do you disagree that N Korean govt is a dictatorship?" What does DSA think they should say? / 2
in winning more public support in the US for ending the sanctions if we address the elephant in the room rather than adopting a policy of sticking our heads in the sand and sending the very clear signal that we support, or at least refuse to publicly criticize, the DPRK govt / 6
Our Trans/Reproductive Rights campaign, with 387 cosigners 📝 was ruled out of order by the resolutions committee on procedural grounds (but they allowed the NPC to propose closing down the BDS WG after the deadline expired). Please sign to put it on the convention agenda 🗳 🌹
🚨 Trans & reproductive rights are under attack. We can't rely on the Democrats to mount a serious challenge to these rightwing assaults. There's been a lack of a serious national campaign to defend trans & abortion rights.
Sign to put it on DSA's agenda!
Our statement should give some political direction for our public reps & for chapters & members who will be hit with these responses. Is the IC advice to ignore it? That is not viable or credible. It would weaken our ability to win support. I think DSA & its reps should say / 3
War hysteria always unleashes the most poisonous, reactionary & irrational demons of class society. Islamophobia and anti semitism are on the rise. Joe Biden is fundamentally responsible - he can't unleash the dogs of war while disowning the consequences.
DSA mourns the death of Wadea Al-Fayoume, a 6-yr old Palestinian child in Chicagoland, at the hands of the family’s landlord.
This apparent hate crime is not a random tragedy. Palestinians in Gaza and beyond are dehumanized in the public sphere as Congress gears up to fund war.
The House voted with a wide bipartisan majority to pass a ban on importing Russian oil, natural gas and coal into the United States. The final vote was 414-17, with two Dems, Reps. Cori Bush & Rep. Ilhan Omar, and 15 Rs voting against the bill.
Imagine how differently the last 20 years would have gone if Democrats in Congress hadn't voted to authorize the war in Afghanistan, the Patriot Act, and the Iraq War?

Never understood Leftist gun nuts insisting an armed proletariat is a necessary condition for revolution. In most revolutions, the decisive factor is a section of the military/security forces breaking from the old regime. Instead of joining the SRA, Leftist gun nuts should enlist
The simplistic black & white thinking in DSA about endorsements needs to go! DSA should be supporting and actively campaigning for Bush (& AOC) - but with our own independent socialist message that includes criticisms of both of their unprincipled positions 2/2
Yesterday’s assassination attempt has significantly strengthened Donald Trump's political position. The shooting is likely to rally the minority of GOP voters who were previously uneasy about Trump, as well as further energizing and radicalizing his base. 🧵
Left wing Senator's, especially those calling themselves socialist (looking at you Bernie), should NOT be voting to expand NATO 🤦 Disgracefull that they have allowed right populists to be the face of "opposition" to the growing militarist drive by both parties

refuses to commit to voting NO on the Biden-McCarthy austerity deal (a deal that increases Pentagon funding to $886 Billion in the name of "deficit reduction"!). ALL progressives must vote no!
Did the four DSA members in the caucus vote against this? They need to publicly oppose this terrible decision, endorse Nina Turner & finally form a Socialist caucus to fight to win left wing voters to class struggle policies instead of the Progressive caucus's left liberalism
Points to a larger issue: ALU raised $120K and won. The main problem with most unions organizing is not a lack of resources, it is the strategy employed. Throwing millions more at the same bankrupt strategy won't produce dramatically different outcomes
Strongly recommend this article on why we need to center politics. This is in contrast to the common sense in DSA that focuses on organizational questions of how, rules, etc.
Wrote a piece for The Call about why democratic socialists should "put politics first." We in DSA need to figure out the "why" questions first and the "how" questions second. It'll make us a stronger and more unified organization. Hope you'll check it out!
I was part of the protests against the brutal US sanctions against the Iraqi people in the 90s. I was very active in the antiwar mvt from 2002 onwards (really starting after 9/11/01). We absolutely lead w/opposition to the sanctions & US invasion/occupation! AND there was no / 1
Excellent statement from

✊✊We need more unions to strike in protest of the outrageous violent repression of campus protests, in defence of freedom of speech & assembly, and to demand universities divest from the Israeli war machine🍉1/3
DSA stands in solidarity with UAW 4811’s decision to call a strike authorization vote in response to the University of California’s fierce repression of pro-Palestine protests, including the arrest and assault of several union members. 🧵(1/7)
DSA was 100% correct to actively support Bernie's campaigns, but it made a mistake in being uncritical. Given Bernie's political weaknesses DSA should have argued for Bernie in an ind way & avoided cheerleading. Its worth learning from bc we will face similar situations again
Support for Bernie should have always been “without illusions”. Working in the campaigns was absolutely the right political move. But his soft anti-imperialism was always also soft imperialism, and this kind of situation would be 1000 times worse if he was President
This is the kind of message supporters of UPS workers should be issuing. It puts agency with the rank-n-file & tells them that we are ready to support them if they choose to strike. Very different from Bernie & AOC rushing to declare victory & ignoring the rank-n-file

This is 99x better than 99% of unions. Tweets 1-7 are far better than what other unions are saying: clearly acknowledging neither Trump nor Biden, Reps nor Dems, represents working people. Good they dont endorse Biden. But it's conclusion fails to offer an alternative 🧵 1/6

The only viable way to fight Trump is building a massive, democratically organized, workers movement. There are no shortcuts to building political opposition to Trump and the decaying capitalist system that is spawning far-right populism internationally.
@ScholarlySpoon
Larouchites bad. Far more important is AOC & DSA members in Congress have supported US imperialism in this conflict w/Russian imperialism. They voted for tens of billions in weapons & expanding NATO. Their policy runs risk of nuclear war ☢️ We need an anti imperialist peace mvt🌹
Good example how syndicalist ideas (anti political, rely on militant trade unionism) can naturally develop in the absence of a principled mass socialist movement. Or as Lenin said "ultra leftism is the punishment for opportunist sins of the mass workers parties"
Congress enjoys paid sick leave, yet they see fit to deny that very benefit to freight rail workers. Workers cannot rely on political parties, it is literally always us against everyone else, and today's action by the Senate proves it.
@transportworker
This is really bad, 2 of the 3 DSA State Senators voted the wrong way! And this happened in NY where DSA electeds have the closest connection with the organization. It's time to face up to the reality that our electoral work is in crisis and a sharp course correction is needed

avoiding the question what do you think of Saddam Hussein? We made clear that socialists 100% opposed him & always had (unlike US govt which armed him in 70s & 80s!). We argued that the task of overthrowing him was for the Iraqi people, not US imperialism (i.e.

Justice Democrats face a political crisis very similar to the one shaking DSA. The whole Left that pushed to reform the Democrats during the Trump presidency are now in crisis with the Dems in power & left Democrats adopting a conciliatory stance towards Biden & Dem leadership
SCOOP: Justice Democrats, the progressive PAC that made waves in recent years by helping new-generation lefty candidates run against more establishment Dems, laid off nine of its 20 employees this week as the organization faces a major financial crunch.

Jeffries is a corporate Dem who has extremely aggressively attacked DSA, the Squad & Left Democrats. He will likely be more conservative & hostile to the left than even Pelosi. The Freedom Caucus is far more adversarial to their party establishment than the Squad. Not good! 🤦

This is not the message US socialists should be putting forward. We should oppose Putin & his invasion. But instead of calling for targeted US sanctions, we need a clear condemnation of what US government & your party (Biden) plans in terms of massive sanctions on Russian people
Russia's invasion of Ukraine is indefensible. The U.S. is right to impose targeted sanctions on Putin & his oligarchs. We also must work with our allies to prepare for a refugee crisis on a massive scale. Finally, any military action must take place with Congressional approval.
Excellent that four DSA members voted NO. But very telling that out of 97 members of the
@USProgressives
caucus, only 15 Democrats voted no. Progressive caucus (& Democratic Party generally) is a joke.
@DemSocialists
members in Congress need their own socialist caucus!!
2) Weakness: strategy is 100% electoral - we need to elect more Democrats in 2022. What is missing is *any call for mass mobilization* - collective action from below like protests, direct action. Debt abolition protest 1/22 points way forward, along with increased strikes
Good article on the critical role of building rank and file caucuses to transform our unions into democratic, class struggle unions that fight on behalf on the whole working class
Sanders response highlights his political strengths & weaknesses. 1) Strengths: combative, good framing (working class vs corporate interests) & demands Senate vote (puts more attention & pressure on Manchin etc) 🧵
Excited to be running & grateful to Seattle DSA members for nominating me! DSA is in crisis, but its still the best hope for building a mass socialist mvt in decades. This convention is a chance to set a new course towards political independence , effective campaigns & democracy

Excellent Marxist analysis of why Russia and the US are clashing over Ukraine. Published on Monday, so doesn't reflect most recent developments, but still very helpful
Terrible position by Canadian NDP left leader. Uses left arguments to justify support for Canadian & US imperialist intervention. Yes, Left should oppose Putin's invasion. But should absolutely NOT call for Western imperialism to intervene ("defend Ukraine")

Eugene Debs was a political giant, a genuine revolutionary & a real leader of the US working class. But this quote sums up one of his biggest failures. He politically was the most authoritative leader of the left-wing of the Socialist Party, but he refused to seriously engage🧵
Eugene Debs, 1920: "I have no stomach for factional quarreling, and I refuse to be consumed in it. If it has to be done others will have to do it. I can fight capitalists but not comrades."
The shooters motives are still unknown. *If* they were politically motivated against Trump, their actions will backfire terribly. Desperate terroristic methods do not serve the interests of workers - they demobilize the masses & create favorable conditions for intensified state.
