“Let us fittingly honor Basil, Gregory and John, as instruments of the grace of God, harps of the Spirit and sweet-sounding trumpets of theology! From on high, their admirable preaching announced awesome mysteries; as three satellites proclaiming the great Trinity, they spoke of the glory of God to the ends of the earth.”

"I know that the Immovable comes down; I know that the Invisible appears to me; I know that he who is far outside the whole creation Takes me within himself and hides me in his arms, And then I find myself outside the whole world. I, a frail, small mortal in the world, Behold the Creator of the world, all of him, within myself, And I know that I shall not die, for I am within the Life, I have the whole of Life springing up as a fountain within me. He is in my heart, He is in heaven: Both there and here He shows himself to me with equal glory." -St. Symeon the New Theologian

@TheEudaimonist Not all were completely sanguine about Sertillanges. See the details of his life here:

Couldn’t even squeak out a much cheaper version of stoic virtue under such words. And think that this was for a man who was a devout Baptist, at least at one time.(I only make the qualifier because so many people get into the zeitgeist. I don’t know what in the end he did…. In the interest of being favorable to the recently dead, especially someone who did try to be a positive influence, despite his weaknesses, I won’t comment on what might have happened to his beliefs…)

@ZweiperX You might find some of the Latin tendencies difficult, but one of the benefits of the dated but still-useful works of Tixeront is the fact that they provide a kind of clear narrative. There are other works that could be useful, but they are often more academic.

@ZweiperX I still remain disappointed at most Patristic summaries because of how technical or dry they remain - especially nowadays, when they are written by experts.

@ZweiperX Obviously, I'm writing this to you as an Orthodox believer. Some of my fellow Catholics probably would be surprised that these are my recommendations. But I'm in Eastern Catholic, so many of our members find these texts very helpful.

@ZweiperX Recently, the works of Fr. Dumitru Stăniloae have come into publication again. They are more difficult, though. I'm a big believer in getting a decent big picture narrative. Perhaps the person to go to is McGuckin.

@ZweiperX There's a reason why, for many people something like Ware's _The Orthodox Way_ remains a kind of transition, although it's relatively simple. You might be interested in the much longer two volumes by Fr. John McGuckin.

@ZweiperX You just have to always remember that everybody has a slant and some people have an agenda (not always pernicious agendas, but real agendas for particular narratives). Just to be aware of this.
