One time I did a school presentation of Hansel and Gretel and I purposely made the background for some scenes birch trees with eyes like these.
The idea was to make it unsettling and the set minimalistic with colours before the witch shows up.

They aren't even 12, Luca is 13 and Alberto is 14. I had my first kiss at like 7. I know some that already had sex at 13/14. I've also seen people complain about the age gap. Also they appear to be aged up in this image.

My theory is they just don't show up because photos back then required a long exposure period so the only thing that didn't move would show up in the picture.
Like for example in this picture that shows a shoe shiner and customer.
