An honour to deliver my maiden speech in Parliament today, paying tribute to Sir Bob Neill, my beautiful family, and the best constituency in Britain, Bromley and Biggin Hill.
Residents across
#Bexley
and
#Bromley
are telling me to oppose Sadiq Khan’s ULEZ charge. I’m listening and I will keep fighting for you. Thank you for your support today.
It’s simply not right that Londoners are struggling to pay their bills and make ends meet.
The UK Gov must do much more to help people through this cost of living crisis.
When Labour thinks about private schools, they picture Eton pupils.
They don't think about a kid from the council estate wanting better for his children, a shop worker working extra shifts, or parents sacrificing everything for SEND education.
Labour cannot fathom aspiration.
Today a majority of the London Assembly voted against the Mayor of London’s budget and his painful 8.8% Council Tax rise. 14 members voted against it and only 11 (all Labour) for. It passed anyway as it needs a 2/3 majority to fall.
We have less than 100 days to stop Sadiq Khan's Outer London tax.
It will penalise people for driving into Bexley and Bromley to work, shop and visit friends and family.
I need your help to stop Khan's tax, so please sign and share my petition now:
Top Lib Demery! Lib Dem Leader Ed Davey asks for his Kingston constituency to be removed from the expanded outer London ULEZ because…it’s in outer London. The Lib Dems could have voted with us to stop this expansion - they did not.
Great to hear
#Bromley
council Leader Colin Smith speak at the anti-ULEZ rally today. There was amazing support from the crowd.
#Bromley
will continue to fight against Sadiq Khan’s outrageous tax grab.
It’s official - an overwhelming majority of Londoners oppose the ULEZ expansion.
68% when you exclude organised responses.
The Mayor must now scrap the policy and open the consultation process to public scrutiny.
#TheULEZScandal
Congratulations
@Anna_Firth
- I know you’ll be any amazing advocate for
#SouthendWest
and will build on Sir David’s legacy…as well as create one of your own.
This is an interesting denial from Sadiq Khan. In May 2021 my colleague
@KeithPrinceAM
asked if the mayor had any plans to expand ULEZ to outer London. (1/4)
This isn’t an accurate headline. What it should say is, ‘After two or three years - when ULEZ ceases to bring in enough money as people will have changed their cars, been priced out of driving or closed their small business - then he’ll bring in a new scheme which hits all cars.’
Sadiq Khan considers scrapping controversial Ulez scheme, replacing it with 'pay-as-you-drive' system - which could see drivers charged based on how many passengers are in the car
ULEZ UPDATE: An alarming story in today’s Telegraph. Research (especially that paid for out of public funds) should be open to review and debate. The mayor’s office certainly shouldn’t be dictating e-mails for press releases or squashing dissent.
Advertising Standards Authority upholds multiple complaints against Sadiq Khan’s
#ULEZ
adverts - ‘Because the basis of the claim was not explained and evidence to support the claim…was not supplied, we concluded that the ad was likely to mislead.’
This is really good news for hard working people across
#Bexley
and
#Bromley
Well done to those council Leaders who pushed this - including our very own
@TeresaONeillLBB
and Cllr Colin Smith. It’s not over yet, but one thing is certainly clear: the camera expansion must stop now!

Big thank you to everyone out campaigning with me across Bexley and Bromley this weekend 🙌
It was a huge privilege to speak to Londoners at the ‘No to ULEZ’ rally on Saturday. Real people with real issues and concerns. We need to redouble our efforts and stop Sadiq Khan’s ULEZ tax.
We need a Mayor who supports our local businesses in

@Conservatives
I have been sworn in as the Member of Parliament for Bromley and Biggin Hill.
The tie I am wearing was a gift from
@neill_bob
- a wonderful mentor and committed public servant.
As I take up this role I commit to do my best for you all.
Thank you for the opportunity to serve.
Khan’s deputy urged scientists to alter study showing low emissions zone had no impact on children’s health - “…there was no evidence of improvements in the proportion of children with small lungs or asthma symptoms over this period.”
Pleased to see outer London Boroughs - including
#Bexley
and
#Bromley
- win this first stage of the process. It’s a long old video but this may provide some context regarding Sadiq Khan’s flawed ULEZ consultation:
ULEZ:
"
@MayorofLondon
will be hurting ordinary everyday people, & for no benefit at all because he knows ULEZ extension is not going to improve air quality"
This in Orpington, Kent w/

Join us Trafalgar Square 15 April & say "No to ULEZ"
Absolutely right from Susan Hall
@Councillorsuzie
“If Sadiq Khan will not do the right thing, then I will. If I am elected Mayor, I will scrap the Ulez expansion and invest £50m in a plan to reduce air pollution.”
Great to see so many Councillors, farmers (yes we have farmers in
#Bexley
and
#Bromley
- that’s very much part of the point) and residents out in
#Orpington
opposing ULEZ. The fabulous local MP, Gareth Bacon, continues to voice his opposition to Sadiq Khan’s tax on outer London.

Delighted to support constituents protesting Sadiq Khan's ULEZ plan in Orpington town centre this morning.
It's not about air quality. It's a cash grab that will hit families, businesses and farmers.
No, the government didn’t force Sadiq Khan to expand ULEZ nor was his decision to expand it to the whole of Greater London a requirement of the TfL deal. In fact, he was explicitly told that he was not allowed to use the bailout money on ULEZ expansion!
I am deeply honoured that my colleagues have elected to be the GLA Conservatives' new Deputy Leader.
As Deputy Leader, I will support Susan Hall AM as she leads our group's efforts to hold the Mayor's feet to the fire and make London a safer, more affordable city.
Fabulous to have our Mayoral candidate
@Councillorsuzie
out with us in
#Bexley
this morning. Huge amounts of positive engagement on the doorstep and us, you guessed it, lots about ULEZ.
Another record tax hike from Sadiq Khan - 9.7%! In fact, he has increased council tax by 57% since he was elected. We also expect further tax increases for Police, TfL & ticket prices in the next few weeks. Then as expanded ULEZ charge hitting the poorest Londoners in August…
The excellent councillor Simon Fawthrop keeping up the campaign against
#ULEZ
in
#BigginHill
today. It was great to see so many there. Remember, Susan Hall will cancel the outer London ULEZ expansion on day one.
For a year now, we’ve been asking Mayor Sadiq Khan for evidence that spending £200 Million on an expanded camera network, and charging the poorest to drive, is the best way to improve air quality in outer London. This report suggests it is not.
I am humbled by the honour and responsibility of office and promise to work tirelessly for the people of Bromley and Biggin Hill. Thank you!
After my election on Friday morning, I attended my first event as the Member of Parliament with a visit to Bullers Wood School.
This would have a devastating impact on business in
#Bexley
&
#Bromley
- once again the current Mayor is punishing Greater London for his multiple failures - it’s time for new and better leadership with
@ShaunBaileyUK
as our next Mayor of London.
🚨 NEW: Sadiq Khan’s deputy Shirley Rodrigues was asked by
@emmabest22
if she’d read a peer-reviewed Imperial study, which found ULEZ had a limited effect on air quality when it was first brought in.
Her response? “It sounds a little bit like the climate science deniers.”
Great morning on the doorsteps in
#Sidcup
#Bexley
with the fabulous ward councillors Cheryl Bacon, Richard Diment and June Slaughter. Brilliant to see MP

I’m delighted to be readopted as the

66% voted against Sadiq Khan's ULEZ expansion. Even worse, a Telegraph investigation has uncovered evidence that opposition votes may have been improperly excluded. The ULEZ expansion must stop and the Mayor must explain what has happened to those votes

I can’t tell you how angry people in London’s suburbs are. This heinous tax will destroy small businesses, stop people visiting family and friends and make - from the mayor’s own impact assessment- negligible difference to air quality. It’s a cash grab - pure and simple.
Conservative London mayoral candidate Susan Hall is now in a statistical tie against Khan - the issue at the top of her literature: "I will scrap ULEZ on Day 1" (Congestion pricing)
Motorists are being warned they risk a penalty charge notice (PCN) for parking on a grass verge or pavement, which is forbidden. The warning to all drivers follows reports of TfL vehicles parking on the grass verges in the borough to undertake ULEZ work.
At Mayor’s Question Time last week we heard the first hint of mobile camera units being deployed to back up ULEZ. I don’t understand how he’s procured these so quickly when he had to order the ULEZ cameras before the consultation even started….
Right, so what’s going on here is that the Government gave Sadiq Khan over £4bn to start 35,000 new homes between 2021-2026. So far he has started zero. So he is now going to buy existing housing and pretend they are new. Net number of new houses 0️⃣ Impact on private rent ⬆️
I'm proud to be the Conservative candidate for Bromley and Biggin Hill, where I served for 14 years as a local councillor and then as your Assembly Member.
As your MP, I'll be your champion, working to deliver for you. I'll fight to earn your vote and trust ahead of 4th July.
The court has found that Sadiq Khan does have the legal power to impose ULEZ. That does not mean that he should.
In just over a month the least well off will be hammered by this regressive tax.
Then he’ll bring in road-user-charging for all. Remember:
New: The next People's Question Time - where members of the public have a chance to quiz
@MayorofLondon
- is to be held online because of heckling and disruption at the last meeting.
The ULEZ expansion is hitting people hard in outer London. Susan Hall gets it and has committed to reverse it on day one. A vote for anybody else will keep ULEZ and open the door to pay-per-mile road user charging.
@Councillorsuzie
Sadiq Khan ignored Londoners' concerns about the ULEZ expansion. But I am listening, which is why I will scrap it on day one of my Mayoralty.
Tell me how Sadiq Khan's ULEZ expansion has affected you 👇
Momentum is building. Sadiq Khan needs to listen to those impacted by this new tax on people, workers and small businesses. We presented alternatives (see our budget amendments) which Labour refused - including investment in cleaner buses. ULEZ is just a tax grab on the poorest.
'I'd stop the Ulez expansion on day one!'
Conservative London Mayoral candidate Susan Hall vows to stop the Ulez expansion on day one of being in office.

One year ago today Labour, Green and Lib Dem Assembly Members voted for Sadiq Khan’s new ‘Transport Strategy’. We warned them that they were giving the Mayor power to bring in ULEZ and Pay-per-Mile charging with no further checks or scrutiny. Guess what?
The ULEZ expansion came into effect today. This will hammer families, small businesses and charities in
#Bexley
#Bromley
and elsewhere. Sadiq Khan’s next step is road user charging - we need to continue to work to make public his already developing plans.
Great to see

I can’t see a scenario where Sadiq Khan stops or delays ULEZ. He might ‘find’ more money for scrappage, or increase eligibility. He could reduce the daily charge or propose discounts for certain drivers. But there is no way he’ll cancel the expanded scheme - it’s about the money.
It is an honour and a privilege to have been selected as the Conservative Parliamentary candidate for Bromley and Biggin Hill. My thanks to Sir Bob Neill KC MP for his years of service, wisdom and commitment |
For many black Londoners, our city feels unsafe. On Khan's watch, the number of black Londoners murdered has soared by 68%.
@ShaunBaileyUK
told the Mayor what impact rising crime has had on his family and community. This was the Mayor's disgusting, blame-shifting response.
Sadiq Khan is making the analogy with banning smoking again. It’s wrong.
Nobody said:
‘You can smoke in a pub if you pay the Landlord £12.50.’
Also, there weren’t numerous independent scientific reports saying the ban would make no real difference.
It appears that other scientific institutions were asked, by Sadiq Khan’s office, to alter their press releases after research found insufficient evidence to support Khan’s air quality claims.
This is extraordinary. Not only did Sadiq Khan refuse to tell the London Assembly he was planning this he also neglected to tell the train operators, or even agree a deal with them! It’s nothing more than an ill-thought-through PR gimmick using funds which are needed elsewhere.
Confusion over
@MayorofLondon
off-peak Friday fare pledge. He says train companies will get £2m a week to make it happen. TfL says not. No deal has been agreed.
Sadiq Khan has nearly £150m in a ‘transport innovation fund’ that he is reluctant to explain. My bet is there will be another ‘announcement’ around fares which he refused to tell us about. We cannot scrutinise him if he does not share all the information.
Thanks for writing this up. I kept digging on the salaries. One of Sadiq’s Deputy Mayors was kind enough to let me have the pay bands. Now, these are just TfL employees - Project Detroit’s 116 consultants are where the rest of the cost is. Pay-per-mile is part of their brief.
Government funding agreement did not force Sadiq Khan to extend ULEZ to cover all of Greater London - Full Fact | “Neither the funding agreement nor Mr Khan’s election manifesto specifically referred to expanding ULEZ to cover all of Greater London..”
This proposed tax would do real damage to business in
#Bexley
&
#Bromley
. The current Mayor’s constant disregard for Greater London Boroughs is why we need fresh new Leadership at City Hall.
@ShaunBaileyUK
listens to what we need and will deliver us a better deal.
I'm fighting to be Bexley and Bromley's next London Assembly Member to keep our area safe, green and thriving.
Together with
@ShaunBaileyUK

I've known James for 15 yrs. He has a record of delivery and service for local communities and the country. He was a strong voice in hard times. A voice that was firm but never raised.
A communicator. A unifier. A leader. I wholeheartedly support his bid for the Leadership.
“An extra half a billion in additional ‘surprise money’ has turned up since Christmas. Money hoarded and not used. Money stored up for an election year.”
James Brokenshire was an exceptionally kind man. Friendly and giving - always taking the time to support others - he is a huge loss. My thoughts are with his family at this time.
