the on-chip optical dynamic range between the pump laser and the single photons in our recent paper is about the same as the dynamic range between this US Navy ship-mounted laser weapon and a bright star seen by the human eye - 120dB, or a factor of ~1 trillion

One of the main reasons that AI has recently transitioned from “maybe one day” to “here now” has been sustained algorithmic innovation. Insights such as the transformer architecture, attention, dropout, batchnorm etc. have contributed to decades of Moore's law-like, roughly exponential progress over time and huge reductions in the computational resources required for specific machine learning tasks. It's encouraging, and a testament to the hard work of the community, that we also see the same kind of improvements in compiled quantum algorithms targeting fault-tolerant machines. This paper, written together with our colleagues at BI, effectively combines Active Volume, BLISS and THC to give another large, multiplicative improvement. Congrats to the team on a big step forward
Exciting results in quantum chemistry published w/ @Boehringer brings us closer to calculating the exact electronic structure of Cytochrome P450 (drug metabolism) and FeMoco (fertilizer production) on a quantum computer, with >200X reduction in resources relative to state-of-the-art quantum algorithms.
