Omaha City Council is moving forward with an ordinance requiring masks similar to Lincoln. It’s a simple and practical thing we should all be doing to try and get our kids back to school safely.

Omaha the only major US city without a mask requirement. Risk of COVID spread now orange and school is starting. Important we pass the ordinance with emergency clause.
Five votes confirmed for the city council ordinance requiring masks. Only need one more to enact the emergency clause on Tuesday. Adding to the urgency, OPS announcing changes to the school year and fall sports at 3 pm.
Douglas County COVID positivity rate down to 6.9% this week - lowest since July - and Omaha Public Schools is working on a plan to return to school. We will continue to monitor but Omaha’s mask mandate is clearly helping.
Here are the details from an 8:56am update sent to citizens via email from the City of Omaha. Amazing news that there are no known deaths as a result of the tornados.
Happy 115th Birthday to Thelma Sutcliffe! This distinguished resident of city council district one is now officially the oldest living person in America.
Today’s groundbreaking for a new $110 million children’s behavioral health center @ 84th Dodge. Ask any parent, principal or police chief. One of the most important things we can be doing right now.
Approved the city’s first tiny house project today. About 50 units made possible by our recent transit oriented development master plan changes. Can be part of the affordable housing solution.
This army of volunteers heading out into the community to help the elderly and the needy service furnaces for the winter months ahead. Thank you Steamfitters and Plumbers Local 464!
Just toured the Nox-Crete fire site with the help of Engine 5. Incredible damage. Thank you to our firefighters for a long night last night and keeping everyone safe.
Received applause when walking into Blueline Coffee this morning for proposing the plastic bag ban and keeping the conversation going. I do love

A reasonable extension based on the data. Continues a simple and practical thing we can all be doing to get kids back in school and the economy recovering. Omaha's mask mandate could be extended to Oct. 20 | Politics & Government |
Officially announcing our campaign for re-election to city council today and am working a shift in the emergency department @ Immanuel Hospital in my district in support of our healthcare providers.
Fighting to keep my new mental health funding amendment in the city budget today. City, county, police, schools, providers and philanthropy all agree we need to be working on a larger strategy.
About 29,000 of the city’s 63,000 street lights have now been converted to LED to last longer, use less electricity, and save the city money. Ahead of schedule on the five year plan. Thanks

Supported my alma mater (Central High School) @ city council today. Also supported testimony on racism, equality, justice, economic disparities, and police-community relations. And voted to re-establish affirmative action and appointed a diverse candidate to the MECA Board.
Inspired by all of the young people that testified in support of my plastic bag ban ordinance at city council today from throughout the city. They get it! They know our decision today impacts their future. Passed 4-3!
Proposing changes to the city council’s rules of order next week to continue zoom access for public testimony indefinitely. It’s been smart during the pandemic and will continue to improve access and transparency in the future. One of the virtual trends that should be embraced.
12pm Update: Quick updates on assessing tornado damage: I just surveyed the damage near 186th and Ida Streets (see photos) with Councilmember Dan Begley, and I am in touch with Councilmembers Melton and Harding, who represent the areas primarily affected by the tornados. 1/
Perhaps the only good story in the news today. Super proud of my senior and all the Nebraska kids on this list. 103 Nebraska students make list of super-smart high schoolers | Education |
City Council amended local housing code this week to prohibit discrimination by sexual orientation and gender identity. Adopted non-discrimination in the workplace over eight years ago. State should do the same.
My personal favorite Joe Biden moment...VP Biden called my cell phone when I was considering running for Congress in 2014. As a former City Councilman himself he joked, “...see what can happen!”
“State of North Omaha” annual meeting this morning. Black poverty rates down substantially since we started. One data point not trending positive is black home ownership - reinforcing the need for affordable housing throughout the city.
Great to see COVID vaccination operations rolling into nursing homes and assisted living facilities throughout the metro - including my mom. Nice shirt mom!
My morning bike ride was that much better today. Thank you City Council members, funders and bike lane advocates. It’s just a start, but shows we can do multi-modal transit in Omaha.
Bus Rapid Transit service officially starting Wednesday from downtown to Westroads every 10 minutes. New technology and new natural gas buses hitting the streets.

Testified in support of LB 785 (and LB 531) today at the State Capitol to help finalize over $325 million in federal funds to North and South Omaha. A generational opportunity to address poverty and economic disparities in our community.
100 years ago today women were guaranteed the right to vote. And just yesterday my oldest daughter registered to vote and is looking forward to her first election in Nov.
New Crossroads redevelopment plan announced today. A major item on my ‘to do’ list. We’re one step closer to making it a reality. Working the details and engaging neighborhoods in coming months. This is the heart of our city and we have to get it right!
Habitat donating respirators, OHA, OPPD, MUD halting evictions and service cut-offs, Grocers extending benefits and bonuses to employees. Some of the many stories today of Nebraskans pulling together.
Should LB 77 pass one more round of voting in the state legislature multiple sections of city code dealing with guns and weapons will have to amended or repealed. Police chief, mayor and majority of the city council all opposed.
Introducing another city council resolution in support of a citywide climate action plan. It should have moved forward in the last 10 months since our first action and still hasn’t. It will request a city budget transfer in 2022 to fund it as well.
Walking my dog tonight I met two bulldogs named
#Benson
and
#Florence
. I told their owner if he had a third bulldog named
#Dundee
that would be most of my city council district. And yes, he used to have a third bulldog named
#Dundee
.
I’m probably supposed to use snap chat or Instagram but here’s the entire Central High volleyball and football teams in my front yard when I got home from work today.

Just spoke at the Black Lives Matter peaceful protest and march in Memorial Park. First of several events this weekend. Nice job organizing Elise! A high school junior.
Working on the E-bike situation. I agree they shouldn’t be prohibited from city biking trails. A form of exercise and transit gaining in popularity. B-Cycle is expanding them too.
Check your mailbox today for Douglas County vote-by-mail applications. I normally enjoy going to the polls on Election Day but plan to take advantage of it this time. Really easy to do.
The vandalism that occurred @ Memorial Park last night won’t be tolerated. Especially not where we honor our WWII veterans. Removed immediately and reported to police.
Keystone trail connection near Blair High Road that I’ve worked on for a couple years coming to fruition. Will soon connect the entire trail to the new Cunningham Lake loop.
Thank you District One voters for the broad based support! We need proven leadership that can bring people together and I’ll continue working hard for you on the city council and in the general election.
24 hours ago, Omaha was in a dangerous weather system. Incredibly, no one was killed, but many lost their homes, and also some pets. Our citizens heeded the calls for safety, and through the work of dedicated professionals ...
New set of swings approved for Metcalfe Park @ city council yesterday. A refresh of the complete makeover we did with public/private funds several years ago. Neighborhood parks make a huge difference for kids and families.
Good time right now to re-engage your kids with music and learning how to play instruments. I’m a drummer but spent two hours playing old piano songs with the kids this morning. Fun and therapeutic.
Unanimous city council support today for continuing the protected bike line pilot project and for pursuing a permanent project. And good discussion of multimodal transit throughout the urban core.
This (old) soccer player looks forward to having
@Union_Omaha
professional soccer in downtown Omaha! I look forward to supporting and assisting this project through the redevelopment process.
Probably not happening today in -8 degrees, but check out the major increase in pedestrian and bike counts on Omaha’s trails during the pandemic (2020 vs 2019).
Voting to expand the behavioral health unit within the Omaha Police Department. Will add new civilian employee co-responders with expertise and qualifications in the field.
