Agriculture considered the main source of plastic pollution in Spain's Mar Menor lagoon. A whopping 790 litter items/100m were found on the shore line in 2024! Better coordination between agriculture, waste mgm & marine env is urgently needed to improve the situation.

Although most of it is unintentional, ghost gear is estimated to account for ~22% of plastic pollution in the Baltic Sea. Still, there are a lot of data gaps and lack of incentives to deal with #ALDFG, especially in small ports.

MPA Torre Guaceto off the cost of Pulia, Italy, has successfully engaged local actors e.g. fishermen, municipalities, leisure centres in the MPA's co-management. Incentives in the form of direct payments from conservation schemes help fishermen reduce cost of compliance 💰🎣🛥🪸

Actor control can be a barrier to effective governance in maritime shipping 🚧🌊🛳️ It is caused by a power imbalance which allows dominant groups to exert control over governance outcomes at the expense of groups with less power.

Inadequate rules for regulating roles of governance actors can be a barrier in shipping 🚧🛳️ Pivot towards green fuels sparked investment in R&D that only shipping giants can afford. Such commitment gives large players a substantial leverage over policy.
