Happy New Year my friends! This is the first day of Samhain and the Celtic New Year and also the first day of Winter. The Celtic calendar is solar and follows the alignment of Mother Earth and Sun in the northern hemisphere. The descent towards Midwinter Solstice has begun!

The Aroma!
The aroma from orange peel as it dries out on the stove fills the cottage with a magical scent! The dried peel is later used as a fire lighter! This beats any amount of expensive scented candles 😊

Each year, the 1100+ deciduous trees planted on my 3 acres around the cottage have kept the air cool and fresh in summer and the cottage protected from the harshest weather in winter!

Today I saw a Hare behind Bealtaine Cottage!
The Hare was a sacred and mystical animal to the Celts; a symbol of abundance, prosperity and good fortune
They were believed to have connections to the Otherworld
They were treated with great respect and never eaten

My cottage is now formally in drought. Rain barrels are empty and the spring well is too low for water to flow to the tank in the loft. Clear blue skies above show no sign of relief. Most people on mains water are unaware. Still, it’s a beautiful day and I feel blessed 🙏

There’s a fine stretch in the day as we approach

and the Celtic Spring! Here in the west of Ireland we enjoy almost an hour more light in the evening than London. No fire in the stove as the cottage is pleasantly warm. Stone walls hold heat~our ancestors knew how to build

We hung a rainproof shelter near the veranda to extend play space for my grandchildren on my birthday and it worked great!

A Very Wet Day, but look…
Rainy days are just as beautiful as you can see, but look at the last pic! It’s a tiny Birch tree that’s seeded herself in a decaying log! Full cycle has arrived at Bealtaine Cottage as the woodland takes over regeneration! Isn’t this wonderful?
