Ashokan pillar, Delhi Firoz Shah Kotla, also known as Kotla (meaning "fortress" or "citadel"), was constructed around 1354 by Feroz Shah Tughlaq. It served as the fortified heart of his city, Firozabad, which represented his iteration of Delhi. Amidst the ruins of a palace stands a remarkably well-preserved, polished sandstone Ashokan pillar, dating back to the 3rd century BC. This pillar, one of several erected by the Mauryan Emperor Ashoka, was originally located in Topra Kalan in the Pong Ghati of Yamunanagar district, Haryana. It was later transported to Delhi under the orders of Firoz Shah Tughlaq of the Delhi Sultanate and re-erected at its current location in 1356. The pillar's original inscription is mainly in the Brahmi script, using the Prakrit language, though some Pali and Sanskrit additions were made later.
