Thank you to everyone who helped us get here!!

Accelerators should have more seed-stage founders speak to their cohorts
There tends to be a preference to those later-stage founders who have ‘made it’ but
The further you get, the more you polish the early days, which isn’t helpful for pre-seed founders in the trenches
Alright
@sweatystartup
I usually do not mind your stuff, but this comment is egregious
There are 55 million un- or under-banked people in the US, and yes, they deserve the ability to pay for shelter, or for storage, or to stop at small businesses
A hill I’ll die on:
If you’re a landlord and you accept cash / check payments, you’re wasting time and money.
Justify it however you want, but you’re wrong.
@jwmares
Everyone should be scared of the prospect of PE firms being the primary buyers & removing that wealth from the areas those businesses are in
There's a serious economic risk to the SMB sector consolidating like others have - the capital outflow will *hamstring* local communities
We condemn racism towards the Black community. We condemn acts of violence, bigotry, hate.
Change starts with each of us holding ourselves accountable and taking actions towards a better, more just world. A lot of work needs to be done.
Here's the note we shared with our team.
To grow EcoMap in the earliest days, I forewent a salary for nearly a year so we could bring on more hands instead. Being young with no savings, that sunk me into ~$30k of personal debt
As of this morning, that balance is $0
Feels good.
I have actually been moved to tears by the

Being an ecosystem builder can feel very lonely. To be with over 800 of them, even virtually, is such a magical experience
Thank you to all who made it happen!
@MacConwell
I form of capital for a *very specific* type of company that has unfortunately received an undue share of media attention, and thus caused many founders with otherwise entirely solid businesses to kill their ventures trying to force their non-scale company into a VC box
@sequoia
Almost $4b in assets under management but not enough to set aside for diverse recruitment?
Helps connect the world's top companies to the world's top talent, but has an internal pipeline issue?
Not to worry, a young entrepreneur with Google shall help!
When we fund Black-led funds, they fund Black-led businesses, who create products for overlooked markets, which creates wealth for the founders, which starts to close the giant gap that a historically inequitable economy has created
Well done & congrats

Providing mentors at a coworking space is not an Accelerator
Hosting workshops for founders is not an Accelerator
Providing free prof. services for tenants is not an Accelerator
These things are all great and helpful for entrepreneurs
They are STILL not Accelerators
I never thought that the biggest problem our team would face was having too many people. But that’s what happened last night at
@Innov8Md
. We literally sold out, and every person there contributed to making it a fantastic event. Thanks again Baltimore, we’ll be back soon 🙃
@sweatystartup
For a smart person, bad take
It saves hours of research on knowledge-summarization questions, it autogenerated code that would have taken at least 45min to write, and it’s highly accurate if you ask correctly
It’s one of the quickest ways to access information that we have now
Whatever your opinion of SVB,
there are tons of founders who suddenly cannot access their $ (through no fault of their own),
thousands of employees who may not get paid Wednesday,
& an entire sector facing insane economic uncertainty & unknown downstreams
Be empathetic.
This is… an unnecessarily aggressive take? Entrepreneurship is not limited to tech, and it’s not limited to founders
We should be encouraging generational transition of family businesses,
because otherwise PE will just buy them up and futher reduce local wealth retention 🙃
Hired four people this week. FOUR. They're all amazingly talented, aligned with our
@EcoMapTech
mission & vision, and powerhouses in what they do. This has to be one of the most exhilarating aspects of being a Founder
Today is probably not fun if you've been single during COVID, but I hope that during the inordinate amount of time you've been forced to spend alone, you have come to love yourself just a little bit more 💕

Hey
@JoeMaruschak
, I know that it might be too late for you, but I wanted you to know that your story inspired me to do something to prevent other ecosystem builders from facing the same
We'll pay the salary of an EB for a year, no strings attached:
I love how people will be all " I believe in science" due to the pandemic
but refuse to acknowledge that the data show many social support programs actually pay for themselves in later expenditure reductions
Holds true for SNAP, permanent housing, EITC benefits, etc
What happens when you give families access to food stamps?
...
Kids in those families are much less likely to commit a crime through age 24 as a direct result.
"The...benefits from [food stamp's] later crime reduction exceed the costs of the program."
Drivers in Baltimore need to see this. Even the "best" protected bike lane in the city doesn't matter unless drivers actually care enough to pay attention to the other humans that they are supposed to share the road with
This morning, I was hit by a person in a car who valued my life so little that they didn't even bother to stop to see if I was ok. They slowed before hitting me, paused after hitting me, and decided to leave.
I didn't even report it to the police. Do I think they care? No.
Wild how dysfunctional politics are about to undermine a fundamental tenet of our economic system

has been such a whirlwind - so many people passionate about marrying business with social impact, across all sectors. But mostly, I'm having a blast meeting so many entrepreneurial ecosystem developers from across the world!

shining light on the difficulties faced by Black founders while raising VC, while also building a fund to address it
We need more people like Mac - who highlight the problem, then build a solution - and less people who complain without taking action
Morning walks constantly remind me of the sheer beauty of Baltimore’s Howard Street

I’ve been waiting for the men’s makeup industry to take off
Honestly it’s kinda unfair that women can cover up acne/scars/eczema but men can’t bc stigma & lack of good products
Quite common in other countries, it’s about time the US catches up

I know that precisely very few people need to hear this but:
Don't call your program an Accelerator if you are just coworking space + some business support services
Accelerators = 1) cohort 2) capital 3) education 4) culminating event
A more appropriate term? Incubator!
@DEVINENASH
We scrape a ton of websites to get data on who's operating in which ecosystems & VC sites are the worst offenders - poorly structured with no real data on who/what they focus on
It's honestly a really big problem for equitable access to information (perhaps intentionally so)
@lizbybike
Maryland Ave’s protected lane was what taught me to feel comfortable riding in the city. We absolutely need more of those, not only are they safer but they encourage more people to try out riding
I heard someone complain that it is hard to shop local because they can't find the right businesses for their needs so...we built a platform

I'm lucky that we're able to weather the disruption in cash flow, but SO many businesses can't.
This admin's disfunction & fraud is killing US businesses. Absolutely shameful
This 💯. Our first MVP was functional but ugly as heck - noone moved to buy
We invested in making it beautiful and since then we’ve had customers out the door
With all the no-code interface designers that exist, there’s no excuse for bad design
The Lean Startup concept is amazing but looks different today in 2021 than it did at the time the book was written a decade ago in 2011. I think one of the biggest changes is yes you can have a not finished product but I don't think you can have an ugly product.
But let’s keep telling kids that going into trades is a bad idea because you can’t make a living without a college degree
Not anti-college, but how much we discourage students from getting into very lucrative trades shocks me

As someone who's been both an ecosystem builder & a high-growth founder, being an ecosystem builder is honestly harder
CEOs have direct influence over what happens at your company. E-Builders have to influence an entire system of people & orgs without having any direct authority
We're literally slammed everyday at
@EcoMapTech
trying to keep up with demand for the EcoMap platform
So why would we launch a new product?
Because it makes information about ecosystems even more accessible
And that's our mission.

This is game changing - the funding & space needed to thrive for Baltimore Black-owned businesses
Thank you
@fearlessbmore
@DowntownBalt
for recognizing & taking down barriers. You are true stewards of Baltimore's entrepreneurial ecosystem
The new initiative is Downtown BOOST (Black-Owned & Occupied Storefront Tenancy) Program: Presented by Fearless. Five Black-owned businesses will receive up to $50,000 each in grant funding for capital and operating expenses + lots of technical support.
An accelerator that doesn't provide funding is an incubator.
Mislabeling programs is disingenuous and unfair to entrepreneurs who aren't versed in the nuances of ecosystem parlance
Nothing wrong with incubators, but we need to be transparent about what programs do & don't offer
Surprisingly, no mentor ever told me that their biggest challenge being a 'CEO' was the transition from doing operations to management
Going from being hands-on with my product to really only focusing on sales + team management has been a hard time for me
Anyone else?
Heck yes we are. Read more about the two new student venture accelerators hosted by
@FastForward_U
. Can’t wait to see what our next generation of entrepreneurs are building 🎉
Press reported on a pre-launch site and in the past that would have sent me into a tailspin and now I'm just sitting here basking in the utter chaos that is growth startups
I stopped wasting my time chasing funders and instead chased customers and now we're expanding at a rapid pace AND my job is not investor management
so yeah - build, get customers, thrill them, repeat
10 years ago this was me waiting for a VC to give one Yes so I could build my company, except I got another 300 No’s, wasted 3 years of my life, lost all my savings and shut the company down with $60k in personal credit card debt.
My advice: stop fundraising, start building.
I don’t talk about this phenomena a lot bc it’s hard to back up with data but
Different tech ecosystems absolutely have different personalities & some of them absolutely hold the ecosystem back
Gatekeeping, one-upping, self-importance… it spills over from people to network
Nuclear take: I think NYC VC culture holds the ecosystem back.
There are too many ex-bankers and who bring that buttoned up, overly concrete culture to the space, making it hard for out-of-the box founders to succeed.
So all we get is a bunch of forgettable SaaS and FinTech
On one hand this man’s email really pissed me off, but on the other hand it is a very funny example of why you should NEVER be copy-pasting your lead gen emails
Couldn't agree more - the earlier you can intervene on issues of ecosystem equity, the less likely those problems are going to become permanently embedded in the culture
It's awesome to see new tech clusters arise, but not if they share all the same problems as in the past 🙅♀️
“There is a clear need for Miami to have more and larger investors focused on minorities,”
@BrianBrackeen
said. “The numbers are poor and trending in the wrong direction, and now is the time for ecosystem action versus delay.”
Every time I see a competition for post-seed companies w/ underrepresented founders that includes a hefty "pitch coaching" component...I scream internally
Over programming doesn't make up for underfunding
My favorite pastime is watching people from NYC/SF/MIA be amazed at how other cities have drop dead gorgeous spaces & places and you don’t have to collateralize your first born to access them
I love working with student & first-time entrepreneurs, but if someone pitches me another college tutoring or restaurant discovery app, I'm going to cry
Someone please pitch a "simple robots that clean sludge out of pipes in tanker ships" type venture

Grateful now more than ever for the
@EcoMapTech
team - y'all really are an absolute gem
Exactly. If we value ecosystem building then we want Ecosystem Builders focusing on what they do best,
NOT trying to figure out how to get paid for it
That's the job of the people who benefit from their work - ie, everyone who values local economies
This is going in the right direction. Expecting those doing to the work to figure out how to fund it, in an ecosystem that needs help figuring it out, does not work. More 'global' funding approaches are what is needed.
Over at
@hirerunner
, we’re quietly seeing early growth/traction the likes of which usually garner $5M - $20M rounds of funding for overestimated founders. I have enjoyed bootstrapping+being scrappy and *really* enjoy the non-dilution, but I wanted to point this out bc it’s true.
Last year I gave up responding to both emails & text messages and honestly my life has been so much better that I'm not sure I want to bring that one back
Would it really be that expensive to CNC machine metal panels to create designs like this (Midjourney AI)? We should be able to match the craftsmanship of art deco buildings from the 1920s.

I've spent 16+ hrs this weekend engineering a new backend for EcoMap. I'm tired, my hands hurt, my eyes are sore
But once this is done, thousands of entrepreneurs will have near real-time information about what's happening in their ecosystems
The reminders we need to keep.
