So I guess Airbird kinda has a point, but perhaps not the one he though he was making.

Indeed. I'd have to watch it again through a (perhaps) more cynical lens, but I suspect any Soviet soft-power/cultural-influence aspect was simply a demonstration that they could match or exceed the quality of children's programmes of the 'West' rather than ideological messaging (and, no doubt, kids on both sides of the infamous Curtain probably all benefitted from the escapism and fantasy). That said, I do remember the theme of a haughty aristocrat becoming more human and likeable as she overcame her challenges. Maybe we should update this with a modern tale of the gradual de-nastification (kinda pun, kinda intended) of a ruthless billionaire?
