Today, The Bahamas announced the discovery of the largest seagrass bed on the planet. The nearly 93,000 square kilometer meadow was mapped with the help of sharks wearing 360-degree cameras– an ingenious and fitting tactic for the shark-iest place in the Atlantic.

I watched this bear from my kayak while hiding behind a chunk of sea ice for a long time and he never realized that I was there. These are often my favourite encounters. My goal is always to be invisible to wildlife, and not interfere while they do wild and natural things.

Anytime I see polar bears in the wild, they have shown me something amazing. Whether it is a brilliant display of their intelligence or power or a playfulness - like this one who surprised me by falling asleep clutching a piece of ice - bears are individuals & real characters.

My encounter with an 7000-pound elephant seal, turned out to be a moment I wish I had foreseen. It quickly swam towards me, defending its territory. As I fumbled to exit the water, I got this shot. I was lucky to get away, unharmed.

Emperor penguins may not have the ability of flight, but they sure look like they do as they rocket out of the sea after feeding on krill. To get out of the water, these penguins sometimes must clear many feet of ice, which is made possible by their impressive swimming speed.

We too often consider a mother's love to be uniquely human, yet when I saw the look in this mother polar bear's eye as she coiled around her young cubs to protect them while the sea ice slowly froze, I wondered: maybe we're not as different as we think. #PolarBear #Manitoba

Last week, Icelandic whalers killed a blue whale; an unsanctioned kill, part of the 2018 slaughter of 191 endangered fin whales approved by the Icelandic gov't. I'm enraged to think that these hunters might have butchered the very same blue whale that graced me in the Azores.

A spirit bear settles in for a long sleep after gorging on Pacific salmon along the coast of BC. From the salmon streams to the estuaries to the meadows, the bears rely on an intact wilderness to survive, and in turn, they help feed the land with nutrients from salmon carcasses.

Tip #12 for 2019 is to get into the good habit of separating your recycling, garbage, and compost. It’s one of the easiest things you can do to keep places like this healthy by reducing the amount of waste entering our landfills and polluting our oceans.

As long as there is sea ice, bears like this one will continue to dominate the food chain in the Arctic. But if the ice continues to melt, the consequences for bears like this one will surely be catastrophic. Disappearing sea ice is a gut-wrenching wake-up call.

Under a grey and flat sky, this elephant seal bull sat motionless for hours. These massive pinnipeds are the largest of all seals, with males growing to over 20 feet (6 meters) long and weighing up to 8,800 pounds (4,000 kilograms).

Though popular media often vilifies bears, I hold the utmost respect & admiration for them. Highly intelligent, inquisitive & authoritative, they rule the Katmai National Park & Preserve. Their future as top predators is at risk if the proposed Pebble Mine begins construction.
