Through the most formative years of my life, I unquestioningly accepted the story I was taught about myself by the mental health industry-- that my intense despair and overwhelming sense of immobiliziation and meaningless and suicidal feelings were simply symptoms of faulty brain pathology that could be adjusted with pills if I just hung in there long enough to let them work their biochemical magic. I expended every ounce of my energy constructing a life built around "managing" my so-called "mental illness." Years later, when I woke up to the fact that I'd been misled by the mental health industry, and decided to come off my meds and abandon the diagnoses that I'd once believed so deeply in, @joannamoncrieff's work had a huge impact on me. I was struggling to piece together WTF had happened to me during my long career as a psychiatric patient. Her writing helped me clarify the ways that medicalized language had distorted my sense-making-- and how I could find my way to new language that would rehumanize my self-understanding. It's great to see this coverage of her forthcoming book in @thetimes -- and especially to see how she was given space to articulate the ways that institutions of power in health, education, and media have tried to silence her voice by labeling it as politically unacceptable-- a common tactic used these days by corporations and corrupted governmental authorities that feel threatended by the common sense of the people. We're reaching a tipping point-- I feel it coming. Our culture is ready to face the stark reality that the struggles that come with being human are far more complicated, and systemic, and circumstantial, and political, than anything fixable by a pill and the clinical gaze. Facing this for myself was initially terrifying, but has been the most liberating experience of my life. It hurts to be alive-- to bear the pain and carry the unhealed wounds we inflict upon each other in this industrialized modern world. To medicalize emotional pain is to strip it of dignity, of purpose, of meaning, of humanity. All it starts with is a singular decision: to abandon a medicalized understanding of oneself and forge ahead into the agonizing and beautiful unknown.
