Controversial tweet, but I don't care: If a pupil is constantly in detention, then setting detentions for that pupil is a waste of everyone's time. It isn't working and time would be better spent finding a solution that isn't punitive.

In what world does children putting their hands in the air due to the anxiety of consequences and shouting over their peers during paired discussion demonstrate good learning and teaching? It's not just me, right?

@ShakinthatChalk As others have said, it's all about the culture. In my experience, the children are always brilliant. Adults can make or break a school.

Looking forward to the return to school tomorrow, but grateful for another day of reading and home comforts before the spring term. 🙏 ☕️ 📚

@jeb_mr 'Fun' is perfectly suitable. Children are allowed to enjoy learning.

@AndieG99 All of the above can be fun. Enjoying learning should be celebrated.

There's lots of chatter about behaviour in schools. IMO, everything comes back to a school's culture. Values, policies, etc., will vary based on a school's context, but ultimately, consistency across a school is key. One person can't do it all; you need the school community.

A school is not a business. A school is a place for belonging, support and learning - with young people very much at the centre. Some have lost sight of what education is and must be.

Please, please, please do not listen to people who discourage critical thinking. They discourage to suit their own agenda (usually profit-related). Knowledge is power, but whose knowledge? Those who question are 'dangerous' - GOOD. Keep questioning and challenging.

It's actually a strength to say, 'I don't know enough about this topic to comment', and then to stay silent. More silence is needed from the ignorant.

Suggesting that learning through play disadvantages 3-year-olds introduces a whole new level to the term dystopia.

Children have a right to an education. We are not their bosses. They are not paid to be at school. If you are not child-centred and do not think supporting children is the first priority of a school, I would question why you have decided on a career in education.

Exams in school are not fit for purpose. They continue to disadvantage our most vulnerable young people. They do not prepare young people for life and work. They negatively impact the mental health of young people.

Advice for new teachers starting in Aug/Sept on Edutwitter... Please don't feel guilty if you have spent the summer holiday having a holiday - that's what it's for. If you have gone into school- great! If you haven't- great! Do what works for you.

'Knowing things' is not enough. Children must be able to think critically & understand the dangers of confirmation bias. This is why the 'just tell them' rhetoric is so dangerous. As educators we have a responsibility to prepare children for life, not just exams.

I've never understood the argument that exams support those from disadvantaged communities more than coursework when the attainment gap continues to rise.

The current situation highlights just how much we need inclusion, compassion, responsibility and equity to be ingrained in a school's culture. The importance of a curriculum that focuses on critical thinking, diversity and hope.
