It's official! I will be attending American University Washington, DC to pursue a PhD in economics. I'm so grateful to have the opportunity to be trained by the best feminist economists. And I've always wanted to live somewhere with cherry trees so this is a dream come true 🥲

I feel like the mark of an economist is to describe all non-econ things using econ jargon to the point where it’s annoying. Do other professions do this?

I just went out to dinner and overheard someone at the next table say “diff in diff” and I was like, “I’m sorry, did I hear you say diff in diff?” and that’s how I met an economist out in the wild

After I graduated I took a class on literature by immigrants of color and I think it will be more helpful for my economics work than real analysis was. Economics is about people and that class taught me a lot about people. Real analysis just made me deeply troubled.

Econ will have to accept that part of the solution to its culture of misogyny and sexual abuse is to have more women and fewer men in power. The profession can’t continue to be a patriarchy. Otherwise we take only baby steps.

I cannot overstate how important and upsetting this is. The field of development economics, as it currently stands, is an extension of colonialism. And I was taught that as an undergrad. Many development economists will go their whole careers w/o realizing this.

Ouch. Development economics, ostensibly dedicated to improving the well-being of people in developing countries, is almost devoid of people based in those countries. - JDE editors: 2 of 69 - JPAL affiliates: 5% - ABCDE presenters: 7% - RCT authors: <10%

GRE alone cost me nearly $1,000 (3 takes at $205 each + tutoring) Plus app fees to 8 schools ~$600 Plus opportunity cost of completing the applications So at least $2k and will be lucky to get into a single PhD program. Well worth it in long run but SO expensive now.

How much evidence do we need of sexism in the field before we take steps to filter out sexist folks? We need more women in econ. At the same time, if we're entering a hostile environment, representation isn't the only thing that matters. Climate matters.

It's a display of Western entitlement to previously colonized regions, cultures, & peoples. The mentality is that economists from the places being studied are inadequate and incapable of understanding their own lives. This mirrors how many development economists see poor people:
