need some advice! I’ve been working as an F1 for almost 9 months and so many patients, relatives and staff think that I am a nurse / HCA in hospital due to my gender and height 🙃 I always have to correct them 🙁 I wear scrubs and a stethoscope 🩺 What more can I do?

People say that medical students and doctors who come from a BAME background have to work twice as hard to reach the same positon as a doctor who is not from a BAME background. That’s why I was shocked at the way the female consultant treated me and was unsupportive

Very proud of your mother 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 it’s okay for anyone to become a GP, but ONLY if you want to become a GP! You should always challenge the boy and his parents on cultural issues eg. Challenge his independence at his age and responsibilities around the house. Bet he does 0!

As a female medical student, I still experience gender discrimination between other medical students from senior consultants when attending hospital placements. I thought that mentality had phased out by now in 21st century NHS... 😫😖

The last 2 weeks of my FY1 shadowing period have been absolutely fantastic! Plenty of time to settle in the hospital and my cardiology team are incredibly welcoming 🫀

Whenever I attempt venepuncture/cannula, I initially palpate and find a vein on the patient’s arm. I hold onto it and as soon as I insert the needle, the vein suddenly seems to disappear and I lose it. Is it me or does this happen to everyone?

I did a whole shift today from 9am - 10pm today on the COVID-19 wards. It was difficult to handover to the night team telling them that at least 3/4 patients will die overnight from COVID-19 🙃😰😓

So far during my ward cover shifts, 4 of the patients I had to review needed an ABG 💉
I was so afraid to stick needles and perform ABGs during med school🙃
Now I feel so much better and have more faith in myself after managing to do an ABG on all 4 of them first time round!

I’ve been on the COVID-19 Ward so far this week and will be on there for the next 4 weeks 😷 The seniors and team on the ward are incredibly supportive and full PPE is provided!
But it’s very sad to see families coming in to say goodbye to their loved ones 😣😥

I never tell patients that I am an F1, as they don’t know what that is. I simply tell patients that I am a doctor and I am looking after you today. I only say F1 to other doctors as they know what stage of training I am in. Saying F1 in my tweet was referring to medtwitter

I’m doing night shifts this week with my FY1 during my surgical FY1 assistantship (this involves following their rota)
It’s very scary at night when there’s limited staff & you’re trying to look after Covid patients
You feel helpless when not much can be done for some of them

There have been several times ever since I started working where there is a patient who can only speak Punjabi/Hindi and a translator is needed. I only speak English. When people ask: “can anyone speak Hindi/Punjabi?”

I have noticed this as well! If I ask a BAME senior consultant who trained abroad to teach me a condition or specific questions whilst being on the wards, they reply back saying “go and find the information in medical textbooks” or just recite information

Just because someone has a medical background or has knowledge on mental health, that doesn’t necessarily mean they have any self-awareness or social awareness when someone else’s mental health has been badly affected

Thursday’s evening medical ward cover:
There was a red NEWS call (> 7) for a patient I had to review and do A-E. I was able to do ABG 💉, VBG, venipuncture🩸🧪, but couldn’t get a cannula in!
Any top tips for cannulas? Where am I going wrong?

After working for 3 weeks as an F1, the senior doctors, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, HCAs, PT, & OTs have all been amazing and incredibly supportive. Team working is crucial when working in healthcare and maximising the quality of the patient’s care 🙏🏽
