A Transformative Dialogue: Students Engage with PIDE’s Vice Chancellor Imagine a room buzzing with curiosity, ideas, and aspirations—a space where young scholars meet leadership to shape the future of academia. This was the electrifying atmosphere at PIDE today as Dr. Nadeem Javaid, Vice Chancellor of the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE), engaged in an inspiring interactive session with MPhil and PhD students. In a candid and thought-provoking exchange, Dr. Javaid didn’t just outline policies; he painted a vision—one where students are the architects of PIDE’s evolution. With unwavering passion, he emphasized that PIDE is not just an institution but a movement, a dynamic force shaping research, policy, and national discourse. Game-Changing Announcements Dr. Javaid unveiled a series of transformative initiatives designed to elevate student learning, research, and professional growth: ✅ A Revolutionized PhD Program – Breaking financial barriers to make doctoral education more accessible and empowering scholars to focus on groundbreaking research. ✅ Work-Study Model – PhD students will now work with government ministries (three days for work, three for research), bridging the gap between academia and real-world policymaking. ✅ Specialized Research Tracks – Introducing five distinct research pathways post-coursework, allowing scholars to sharpen their expertise in niche areas. ✅ Market-Driven Skills Development – Ensuring students are equipped with industry-relevant skills to thrive in an ever-evolving job market. ✅ Expanding Global & Industry Linkages – Strengthening partnerships with government bodies, think tanks, and international organizations to create unparalleled career opportunities. ✅ Enhancing Student Life & Campus Development – A vision to transform PIDE into a vibrant academic hub, fostering intellectual discourse and cutting-edge research facilities. A Call to Action: Shaping the Future Together Dr. Javaid urged students to think beyond the classroom—to challenge norms, engage in policy-oriented research, and position themselves as pioneers of change. "PIDE is more than a university; it’s a launchpad for thought leaders," he remarked, underscoring his commitment to providing students with the best avenues for growth and innovation. The session ended on an energizing note, with students voicing their ambitions, concerns, and ideas, reaffirming their role as the heartbeat of PIDE. This wasn’t just another academic meeting—it was a defining moment for PIDE’s future. A future where research fuels policy, ideas ignite change, and students lead the charge toward national and global transformation. @nadeemjavaid75 @ahmad_pide

Pakistan stands at a critical juncture where transitioning to eco-friendly energy is no longer an option but a necessity. PIDE, under VC @nadeemjavaid75 , stresses the urgency of climate action through research centers, the Sustainable Pakistan Initiative, and real-time policy advisory services. To meet its renewable energy goals, Pakistan must accelerate investments, enhance policy consistency, and modernize its grid. Shaping Policy for Genomic Innovation in Pakistan Dr. Muhammad Nadeem Javaid (SI), Vice Chancellor of @PIDEpk met with a high-level delegation from Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI) @BGI_Genomics led by its Co-founder and Chairman, Dr. Wang Jian, to discuss the role of genomics in policy and economic development. Dr. @nadeemjavaid75 highlighted the absence of a clear GMO regulatory framework in Pakistan, which hinders innovation in agricultural biotechnology and food security. He proposed a research collaboration where PIDE will conduct a Training Needs Assessment (TNA) to identify gaps in agricultural genomics and food security policies. This aligns with PIDE’s mandate to provide data-driven policy insights for economic growth and sustainability. BGI, a global leader in genomic research, precision medicine, and agricultural biotechnology, welcomed the initiative and committed to supporting Pakistan in policy development and capacity building. This partnership marks a significant step toward integrating genomic research with regulatory frameworks, industry, and policy, ensuring Pakistan remains competitive in the global bio-economy. @TheBgiGroup @PlanComPakistan

Local governments are not just administrative establishments but the backbone of good governance. They are placed very close to the people so that services can be accessed in time according to the citizens’ demands, thus affirming the state’s commitment to its people. It reinforces public trust and makes one feel included, which is vital for any practical policy framework. By Nayab Khalid MPhil student at PIDE. @nadeemjavaid75 @ahmad_pide

The taxation of Pakistan’s agricultural sector remains a contentious issue, driven by its significant contribution to the national GDP of around 24 per cent yet its disproportionately low contribution to tax revenue, amounting to less than 1pc — less than Rs4 billion of total taxes collected. @DrMFaisal_Ali article in @dawn_com
