investigators, inspecting the failure of legacy hazmat tank cars that are scheduled to be phased out by 2029 - in 2015 DOT proposed phasing them out by 2025, which the Secretary has renewed calls for.
This morning I’m in East Palestine, Ohio, to see the site of the Norfolk Southern derailment, hear updates from investigators, and meet first responders. USDOT will continue its work to ensure safety and accountability.

Today, PHMSA issued a proposed civil penalty of nearly $1 million to Colonial Pipeline Company for multiple probable violations of Federal pipeline safety regulations stemming from an inspection of the company’s Control Room Management procedures.
Every day, 1.4 million hazardous materials shipments are safely delivered in the U.S. These include energy products, medicine, and other essential goods. PHMSA is proud to support America’s hazardous materials transportation system, the largest on Earth.
