MOVIE RECOMMENDATION: "Ingeniously Taking Mount Hua" [智取华山](1953) excels in depicting the close relationship between the CPC and China's peasantry and ethnic minorities during the period leading up to 1949. The film centers on the collaboration between the CPC and locals to capture a KMT stronghold. A particularly poignant scene portrays a grandmother's difficult decision to trust and assist the CPC, highlighting the human impact of the conflict. This harrowing scene takes place at night, in a hut housing a grandmother, her daughter, and her granddaughter. The daughter supports the CPC militias and insists they provide them lodging, food, and assistance. The grandmother has seen too much cruelty in her time and is much more hesitant to trust these strangers. As she contemplates this weighty decision she stares into the eyes of her infant granddaughter. We are deep inside the grandmother's perspective and we can feel the weight of the decision she has to make. Here we are obviously far from the Western stereotype of crude communist "propaganda" that supposedly beats us over the head with one ideological viewpoint. This film is free on YouTube but I haven't found professional English subs.
