This is so important. We were trained that thickened fluids were the only option. They’re not, and in fact, the evidence is inconclusive about their impact. It’s time for us as a profession to stand up for evidence based interventions. Patients deserve better

“Rehab should be seen as an investment”
I often think about patients of mine who we sent home NBM with a PEG. Did we actually do enough? Could I say I tried everything? No, I couldn’t.
We HAVE to fight as clinicians for the BEST dysphagia rehab tools. It’s our JOB.
Rehabilitation should not be seen as a luxury healthcare service.
Complex issues require specialist skills and adequate resources.
Rising levels of unmet rehab needs have knock-on consequences on health & social care systems.
Rehabilitation is an investment.

I love Sarah’s honesty. I was the sceptical clinician too, who desperately wanted a solution for dysphagia, and this felt too good to be true. Seeing the outcomes with my own eyes drew me to the company- I HAD to make this available across the NHS. We CAN rehab the swallow 🤍💪🏼🧠

Every time we start a treatment I ask the patient what they would want if they could eat and drink again.
Every time I tell them I’ll make the SLTs go and get it on the day of the post Phagenyx FEES.
All she wanted was tomato soup, after 200 days NBM. And she had it TODAY 🥫

VERY emotional to hear of patients being discharged home for Christmas on oral intake recommendations after Phagenyx. Two weeks ago, that outcome was unimaginable. Also will never fail to get over how excited the clinicians get when they realise they CAN rehab the swallow QUICKLY

Any 'new' intervention poses questions:
-What's the evidence?
-Who is it for?
-How effective is it?
-Are the effects long-lasting?
In Speech Therapy, you'd struggle to find a dysphagia intervention with a more robust evidence base than PES. We can't afford not to use it.
