I was a big advocate of deregulation of the downstream sector (PMS market) before it was implemented. But at some point during implementation, I began to doubt myself. Although slow in coming, market forces appear to be working in that sector after deregulation (as expected). The only argument against deregulation that made sense to me is that, subsidy is about the only thing ordinary Nigerians enjoyed directly from government, and there was no guarantee that subsidy savings will be used in a way that brings benefits in other areas equivalent of the forgone subsidy. An argument that is more social than economic. I really hope the pricing continues to respond to market conditions, especially conditions that trigger downward spiral.
