It’s not just the sun that’s shining!
A little glow up on our little book!
#TheMakingOfAMan
is for your dad, brother, colleague and lover.
“It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men”
Pre-order paperback for July 20th and let’s start a conversation.
“SO YOU DON’T LIKE RACISM, BUT YOU’RE IN THE UK AND FEEL POWERLESS TO DO ANYTHING?”
I have had several conversations with friends who have recently felt powerless as to what they can/should be doing in response to some of the atrocities in the US.
Here are some ideas. 1/?
So what can we do now? Well firstly education is key.
As an adult these are some essential texts that are worth reading from
@akalamusic
@afuahirsch
@renireni
@AdamRutherford
We are purposefully not taught about this history to maintain the current order. 4/?
You can, in the U.K. education system, go from 7-21 studying history and never have to go into any depth into Britain’s role in colonising and depriving whole continents of rights and resources.
This is a glaring hole in our children’s education. 7/?
Firstly, let’s acknowledge that global anti-blackness is a real thing. It manifests differently in different countries but white supremacy has been an economic driving force for centuries.
This is just a fact. So read that and don’t feel defensive. There is no attack here. 2/?
Amidst the horrific stories shared of the preventative measures that women take to avoid feeling unsafe there seems to be a huge elephant in the room.
Namely, what is wrong with how we are raising boys and young men that women don’t feel safe around them? 1/
THREAD:
#RepresentationMatters
I love playing this show night after night at the DRURY LANE playing a love interest in a Disney Musical opposite the cream of the crop of the talent the West End has to offer.
It is the stuff of dreams for this little brown boy
AND YET…
That’s sorted. Great.
The U.K. has a terrible history of atrocious crimes from near/actual genocide to pillaging nations of their natural resources.
We can only move past this if we have ever, at any point, addressed it as a nation.
We haven’t, don’t and must. 3/?
So what pressure are we placing on
@GavinWilliamson
to ensure we have an honest ANTI-Racist education delivered to our children so that they might enter the world fully aware of our history and the future we want to make? 8/?
@kidnoble
He’s at the ancestral plane now.
That’s where the Black Panthers go.
And we can always call on their wisdom, knowledge and courage.
Sending love.
“To Kill a Mockingbird” and “Roll of Thunder” are wonderful books for children and young adults.
However,
That they are one of the few books in a U.K. classroom that discuss racism is the beginning of a lifelong myth that “The US has the REAL problem with racism”
6/?
What this means is that we must unlearn/be humble enough TO learn about the honest history of the U.K. that we were not afforded in our education system.
(These all have audiobooks as well if you consume it easier that way)
And now to our education system 5/?
We NEED you to see colour. If you cannot or will not, how can you ever be an ally?
How can you ever see that our skin marks us out as a threat?
How can you ever lift the knee from our neck?
How can you ever stop us dying? 14/?
Last but not least, I have avoided as it is by an American white woman, but it holds true. If you have got this far, please read.
Be kind to yourself and others and wash your hands. 16/16
As uncomfortable as it might be for us to have that conversation with our white friends, family, colleagues and children, our black friends, family, colleagues and children do not have that luxury to opt out of racism. So let’s do the work. And continue it. 9/?
I am glad they will dream kindly and imagine worlds where we are all included.
I wish you had their eyes.
The sadness that you left me with tonight will be replaced tomorrow morning with the renewed zeal of one reminded we still have work to do.
I wish you had their eyes.
But if we cannot acknowledge our nations past actions, how can we expect our children to acknowledge their own faults and expect that they apologise when they err, as it is so human to do? 11/?
We learn about the world from the stories we tell ourselves and each other.
If we GENUINELY want to know what we can do to engage with that struggle that black people face daily and be an ally, the first step might be to listen to some stories from more diverse backgrounds 12/?
And not just from the police.
From unfair justice systems.
From biased media reporting.
From unequal treatment in classrooms.
From discriminatory practices in job applications.
It’s uncomfortable but we need you now 15/?
Many people have commented recently that we cannot apologise as a nation. That it’s “I’m sorry you feel that that’s what I said” and “I’m sorry that that’s how you took it”.
We are afraid to admit culpability because we are worried we’ll be held accountable. 10/?
That could be as simple as following them on this platform.
It could be acknowledging your co workers truth if they said you have offended them.
It could be empathy and outrage for scandals like
#Windrush
that you may have been spared by accident of birth. 13/?
For those four audience members in their 50s who left the show, bemoaning my casting as Kristoff as “woke culture silliness”, I feel sorry for you that this Nigerian-Irish Londoner selling ice with a reindeer as a BFF in a fictional land is a step too far for you.
My Afro hair and melanated skin beyond the scope of what you could fathom.
But, sirs and madams, night after night, I see hundreds of children watch our talented cast of all hues and colours and escape into a magical world for two hours.
I wish you had their eyes.
The world is changing, I dare to dream, for the better.
I have had too many dreams promised out of my reach, rooms warned weren’t for me, roles beyond my imagination.
I am glad a new generation will watch our show and feel invited to dream of bigger, better and brighter.
I’ve been holding onto this for a while.
Growing up, I never thought I would be in a Disney stage show.
I can’t wait to tell this story with this cast in this moment.
@frozenlondon
it’s gonna be one wild ride.
Hope to see you all there.
🤍💙🤍
I am sorry that in a world of Ice Queens and magic strikes, this “darkie” as you referred to me was outside of your imagination.
Perhaps you presumed you were safe to speak of me that way, not feeling you’d be overheard.
Perhaps the film has a special place in your heart
Some of you who watched the live broadcast might not have heard what brother

But feel free to RT this, as it's important and should be heard by everyone.

Thank you for
@Lin_Manuel
for letting me be a part of the narrative.
Rapping while holding a sword?
I had the most fun ever.
I worked with the best people.
Enjoy the show folks
Before the
#NotAllMen
arrive and get defensive, that’s kind of the point.
Women don’t know WHO they are safe around and WHERE is a safe space.
There is no way of knowing
But they have been taught to safeguard themselves because one of the
#BadMen
might be lurking anywhere
2/
Hey you
In case somebody hasn’t told you recently
YOU ARE AMAZING
Well done for being you, for keeping at it and adding your voice.
You have value.
Keep finding it.
Keep adding it.
And I’m sure it’s not YOUR
-friend
-dad
-son
-uncle
But it is always SOMEONE’S
The uncomfortable truth is those men learn that violence from SOMEWHERE
What are we doing to address it and make women feel safer rather than placing onus on them to better protect themselves?
3/
Dear
@NatalieElphicke
, maybe if your government were busy feeding STARVING CHILDREN DURING A PANDEMIC, our boy Rashford could have spent his summer chilling?
Like, what?!?
If I speak, they’ll say I’m shouting.
So before you tell women what they should and shouldn’t do, where they should and shouldn’t go and how the should or shouldn’t act...
Talk to the MEN in your life.
Friends, Kids and Relatives.
And pick each other up on the language that normalises that violence.

I know I’ll be accused of “Talking the country down” but just checking:
We’ve relied on a Radio 2 presenter to force the government to get move all adults with a learning disability up the Covid vaccine priority list
And a 23yo footballer to feed starving children.
🤷🏽♂️🙃😞
In what continues to be a year of firsts at
#HamiltonLDN
, I had my loudest heckle of my career thus far at the close of “One Last Time”:
As the song climaxed one of the audience members announced the result of
#ENGCRO
game to the rest of the auditorium and it got me thinking
Just the regular reminder that:
-stories lie at the fibre of what we are as humans.
-Drama and stories are how we communicate and learn from each other.
-Theatre and the arts should not be the preserve of the wealthy.
-Support diverse narratives.
-Teach children Drama.
Women are disproportionately victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.
It can’t be acceptable for us to place that all on women.
The violence acted out is not learnt or born in a vacuum.
Our society and the stories we tell are super important.

Hamilton:
It's rare to feel as much of a disappointment as a Londoner as when you have to break stride to tap out your oyster.
The barrier collision, the backlog, the disapproving tuts from other Londoners? I'm sorry for letting the team down people.

Do you ever just think about your group of friends and just feel a sense of immense pride that they’re killing it in their respective fields?
If so tell them.
It can sometimes feel like we’re all just blinding forging a path.
A friendly voice can make all the difference.
Thank you everyone for messages of support and love.
We performed two wonderful shows today

full of young and old alike that made yesterday feel a million miles away.

There’s an idea that he had a golden generation who he “wasted” by playing “boring football”.
Also fostered a culture of good lads and positive role models which I think makes some people feel judged.
Perception that he lucked his way consistently into finals

People really getting in their feelings about a Black girl with braids being a mermaid.
You know it’s a mermaid right?
Who magically loses her voice?
And chats to sea creatures?
You can’t claim the “historical accuracy” argument with this one.

Dear Trolls in my DMs, I’m sorry I am still tweeting.

I pride myself on giving good hugs.
I don't trust people who give bad hugs.
Last night I had a dream, nae a nightmare, where I could no longer hug properly.
I've awoke this morning and don't know if I can hug anymore.
I'm having existential angst.
Who am I?
