The Center is delighted to announce Clayton Edwards as this week’s #FeatureFriday! 🔔 📝 As a Doctoral Candidate in the @okstate Clinical Psychology Program, this is what Clayton hopes the next generation of pediatric psychologists will bring to the field: “As an approaching member of the next generation of pediatric psychologists, I am thrilled about the possibilities ahead. I believe that our field will continue to evolve in several key areas. I anticipate that future pediatric psychologists will prioritize preventative care by promoting positive mental health in youth before problems arise. By equipping ourselves with the necessary tools and resources, we can work proactively to foster resilience and wellbeing in our young patients. I believe that the next generation will continue to emphasize diversity and cultural competence. By recognizing and valuing the unique cultural experiences and backgrounds of our patients and their families, we can provide more personalized care. I also foresee that the relationships between healthcare providers and pediatric psychologists will strengthen even further, as we work collaboratively to provide integrated care that addresses both physical and mental health needs. With advancements in technology, our field will have even more innovative tools at our disposal. I am confident that we will be able to leverage these tools to assess and treat mental health needs in a more efficient and effective manner, providing even greater support to youth and their families.” 👨👩👧♥️ #CenterforPedsPsych #PediatricPsychology #FuturePsychologists

Though #EverydayActions providers can raise awareness and commit to promoting safe, stable, and nurturing environments! These everyday actions are essential to creating a child welfare system that can equitably support the nations diverse populations and jurisdictions 🫂♥️🧒 "#Everyaction helps make the well-being of children and families a priority." Questions to consider when providing services to families: 1. How are our biases showing up in our policies, practices, and decision-making? How do they impact our engagement with families? 2. Have we asked the families we work with how they feel about receiving help? Where and how do they prefer to receive help, and what makes asking for it easier? 3. What benefits and services to support household financial security are available in the community? What role can we play in helping families gain access to those benefits? 🚨🚨Check out this resource available through @ChildWelfareGov to learn more about protective factors, conversation guides, and outreach tools: #CenterforPedsPsych #ChildAbusePreventionMonth #ThrivingFamilies #ChildWelfareInformation

Happy #FeatureFriday! 🔔 @CSharkeyPhD is an Assistant Professor at the Catholic University of America and the director of the SHARK Lab. She graduated from the Center in 2020. Dr. Sharkey shared the best advice she has ever received with us: “In the midst of navigating the graduate school application process as a new faculty member, I have reflected on the best advice I ever received during my own process of applying to graduate school, “An offer from Larry Mullins is a SLAM DUNK. You have to go to Oklahoma.” Larry was a phenomenal mentor who helped build my foundational research skills, cultivated my passions, and facilitated my growth as an independent researcher. I am so grateful to have experienced firsthand the value of a mentor who wholeheartedly supports you. However, the most critical lesson Larry taught me was how to actually be a mentor. He openly discussed his approach, frequently explained his decision process, and consistently practiced what he preached. He demonstrated the importance of actively creating equitable opportunities for trainees, facilitating the expansion of mentorship and collaborative networks instead of limiting students to your own endeavors, and building resilience by investing time and effort in fostering the valuable contributions trainees bring to the table. Larry would start every mentorship meeting with, “How are things going with you?” and he sincerely meant how things were going with me as a person. From this I learned that the mark of a great mentor is one who not only treats a student as a junior colleague, but also values a trainee as a whole person. My ultimate career goal is not to be a decorated researcher like Larry, AKA the 2023 recipient of the SPP Dennis Drotar Distinguished Research Award, rather I aspire to be a mentor like him. By supporting the next generation of pediatric psychologists far more can be accomplished in the field than I ever could do alone. So, I guess the best advice I ever truly received was how crucial it is to learn from Larry’s model and be a mentor who is genuinely compassionate, humble, and uplifting.” 🫂

🚨 Did you know people of color are underrepresented in clinical research? April is celebrated as National Minority Health Month, a month to raise awareness about the unique challenges faced by communities of color. The Center embraces #BetterHealth through #BetterUnderstanding always, and highlights it especially in the month of April! 🫂 Health literacy along with language, cultural barriers, health insurance, and immigrant status can be barriers for racially marginalized children and adults. One way to empower patients/caregivers to create healthier outcomes for themselves or their families is to provide culturally and linguistically appropriate information. 🔔 For resources, checkout this toolkit presented by @MinorityHealth: #NMHM2023 #CenterforPedsPsych #MinorityHealth

April is Autism Acceptance and Advocacy Month!! ♾️ #Autism is a neurotype that affects the way people experience the world. This can affect every autistic person differently, which is why it is often referred to as a “spectrum condition”! According to the World Health Organization, around 1 in 100 children are born with autism. Many autistic children may also experience co-occurring health conditions such as epilepsy, gastrointestinal disorders, as well as symptoms of depression and anxiety. This month, the Center celebrate aims to #CelebrateDifferences, and empower those in the Autism community to live fully. ♥️ When working with autistic individuals, there are things we can all do to positively impact their experience! 1. Keep a sensory toolkit of squishy, light-up, or spinning toys or games handy in case a distraction or soothing prop is needed for an anxious child. 2. Go slow and take some extra time if needed for breaks or to help patients acclimate to the environment or procedures. #AutismAcceptanceMonth #AutismInclusion #RedInstead #CenterforPediatricPsychology

Today calls for a very special #FeatureFriday at #SPPAC2023 ⭐️ The Center Director, Dr. Larry Mullins, is this years recipient of the Dennis Drotar Distinguished Research Award in Pediatric Psychology. This award is named after the late Dr. Dennis Drotar, who helped establish the field of pediatric psychology and was an active or distant mentor to more than half of the field. This award recognizes excellence and significant contributions in establishing the scientific base of pediatric psychology. We may be biased, but we cannot imagine anyone more deserving than Dr. Mullins. Congratulations on this honor, Dr. Mullins! 🏅♥️
