What happened today is proof that a majority government CANNOT do whatever they want.
Congratulations to all CUPE workers for making history. Your commitment to protecting all of our rights will never be forgotten.
Thank you.
An education worker making $19.89/hr in 2012 working for TDSB now makes $21.63/hr at the same level.
Are you really trying to tell me that someone who got a raise of $1.74/hour over a DECADE is the problem?
Minimum wage has gone up $5.25/hour in that same time frame.
For those accusing CUPE of rushing into a strike: may I remind you that CUPE tried to negotiating with this government 5 MONTHS ago. This could have been resolved in the summer, but the government wanted it to happen during the school year so a strike would play in their favour.
I’m really confused as to why there are calls to cancel March Break to make up for “lost time”. Then what the hell has my kid been attending on his Chromebook every day? What have teachers been spending countless hours preparing for and delivering online?
To be clear, CUPE does not have the power to shut down schools. CUPE workers will only be withdrawing their services in protest. The school boards have deemed that those workers are crucial to the operation of schools and they can’t run without them.
But hey, here’s 1.5%.
Let’s ignore the strike for a sec. What happens if we continue underpaying these workers? They quit.
If schools can’t function without these workers for a day, what happens when a bunch quit?
And who would want to take these low paying jobs?
Pay CUPE workers properly.
I asked a family member over the weekend why they planned on voting for Ford in the election. They felt that Ford has been doing a good job. Asked to elaborate, they couldn’t. This is who we’re voting against: a voter base that doesn’t even understand why they are voting.
I'm getting criticized AGAIN for being anonymous, so let's review:
1) my job doesn't allow for me to publicly hold these views. I like my job. I plan on keeping it.
2) I say stuff that angers powerful people. Protecting my family is WAY more important than Twitter.
Ok?
Education worker wage increases:
2012: 0%
2013: 0%
2014: 0%
2015: 0%
2016: 1%
2017: 2%
2018: 1%
2019: 2%
2020: 1%
2021: 1%
The government is sitting on billions. They’re literally handing out cheques to parents.
If this isn’t the year to get a catch up raise, when is?
You call them lazy & entitled. You take away their classroom, shove more kids into their classes, change their class again and again, give them grade splits, and demand more. They still show up and make it special for the kids. Every. Single. Day. Education workers are amazing.
If you’re planning on showing up to vaccination centres just to try to scare my kid into not getting vaccinated, my kid knows that if you’re there protesting, he’s already better educated about vaccines than you are.
My child's teacher will have been picketing 5 days at the end of this week. That means $2175 of pay forgone. 1 more day and the 1% difference won't get earned back for 3 years. Tell me again how it's "All about compensation"?
It scares me that so many people want to vote for a party that has no platform, refuses to attend most debates, and generally avoids answering questions.
We are so fixated on the issue of whether or not to re-open schools for a few weeks when what we should be focussed on is how to effectively re-open schools in September.
Stop with the “segregation” BS. You have a choice to go get the vaccine. Those who experience REAL segregation don’t have a choice. Grow up, accept the consequences of your choice, and stop co-opting the struggle of others to try and legitimize your inconvenience.
Lecce messed up. Big time. He prioritized his own agenda over the rights of the lowest paid education workers. He needs to be held accountable for it.
It’s time for Lecce to resign.
I’ve been reluctant to criticize the catholic school system in our province because I know many who follow me teach in those schools, but I can’t stay silent: catholic boards need to come to an end. Publicly funding the promotion of one religion above others is wrong.
You all know I’m a huge supporter of educators. But I’m a parent and a husband first, and the decision Ontario Secondary School Teachers have taken against mandatory vaccinations is wrong. Unless medically exempt, all staff in schools should be vaccinated to protect our children.
CUPE followed the rules, filed proper notice, and made multiple efforts to negotiate.
Ford used the notwithstanding clause in a way it was never intended and planned to do so weeks before the strike was ever announced and refused to negotiate.
Who’s really the problem?
If you think privatizing any part of our school system is a good idea, I urge you to look long and hard at what privatization of LTC did to our province.
So when Trudeau was accused of doing a bad job, he called an election so that the people of Canada could decide whether he should keep his job as PM. And all of you on the right said he was ridiculous for wasting money on an election. Now you say he’s a dictator. Which one is it?
So to be clear, the Minister of Education felt it’s a priority to write to the federal government to approve vaccines for kids, but doesn’t feel his own government should prioritize vaccines for teachers, something him and his boss have total control over.
To everyone working in schools: Please know that parents are not buying this educator bashing coming from the MoE. We know you are fighting to protect our kids. We know you love them almost as much as we do.
I haven’t tweeted much lately, because honestly, I feel defeated. Ford is ruining our province, and it’s not just bit by bit or behind closed doors. It’s blatant, it’s destructive, and people STILL refuse to see it!
What use is shining a light if everyone has their eyes closed?
If you really think schools are essential and that missing even 1 day of learning could be detrimental to kids, maybe you should stop treating those who make that happen every day like they don’t matter.
There’s a break for schools coming up. It’s the perfect time, both logistically and ethically, to vaccinate education workers. Enough is enough. Let’s get it done.
When you sit there tonight outraged that a 13 year old girl died from COVID in our province, just remember that the Premier is taking his time with Paid Sick Days because he was hoping the Feds would pick up the bill for it.
Vaccines are not mandatory. The government saying you can’t go clubbing or to the gym without getting the shot is just consequences for a choice you are free to make. Also, we are not “in lockdown”. Haven’t been for some time. A piece of cloth over your face is not “locked down”.
Imagine your boss says: “I need you to do at least 30-50% more hours, I’m postponing your week off, I’m taking away your lunch room, and severely restricting your washroom breaks. Oh, and I’m not paying you more. Also, I might let you go next year.” That’s teaching in a pandemic.
Educators aren't asking for more pay, or vacation. They aren't asking for a bigger pension or benefits. They are even gladly accepting the added task of teaching our kids how to properly social distance & wear a mask. All they're asking is to be safe at work. How selfish of them.
Remember when education workers fought during the last contract negotiations to lower class sizes and stop mandatory online learning?
It’s almost like trained education professionals know what’s best for schools or something.
Remember when kids were struggling because they had to go online because schools were not safe enough? Ford had the money to make them safe, but instead he banked it to deliver some election bribes like licence stickers and highway tolls.
Stay angry. All the way to June.
Before you all start complaining about another strike, remember:
1) Lecce has the funds to resolve this issue today. This is not about money. This is about setting a precedent for other education union negotiations.
2) Underpaid education workers are not a bargaining chip.
Parents: please remember that school boards and educators are hearing this announcement at the same time you are. That now means they have a day and a half to pivot. Please have some patience with educators as they scramble to get things ready for your kids.
Ford put out a take it or leave it offer knowing that when CUPE threatened a strike, Lecce would pass the bill they had already drafted. They assumed little blow back because of the bribe and because they thought parents would only care about schools being open.
They were wrong.
Anti-maskers have the choice not to wear a mask. No one is forcing them to wear one. But by making that choice, they also choose not to shop in person or attend gatherings.
They’re not mad that they don’t have a choice. They’re mad that there are consequences to that choice.
I have a favour to ask all of you: if you’re following
@sflecce
, please unfollow. Even if it’s just for the duration of this protest. Let’s speak to him in the only language he seems to understand.
I’ve seen reports of school admin, Public Health Units, and even government officials talking about seeing “smiling faces again”.
Please stop. It trivializes the efforts of those (especially youth) who choose to keep wearing masks.
It also lacks sensitivity and inclusiveness.
Teachers are 80% women in Ontario, yet their average income is 6% less than the average male with only one bachelor's, when teachers have two. They are attacked for being greedy and overpaid, even though most have 10+ years experience. This attitude needs to change.
#IWD2020
While I realize that the polls favour a Ford majority, let’s remember that polls are conducted by phone, and how many people do you know below the age of 30 that answer phone calls?
Ford and Lecce made a fatal mistake by introducing that legislation. Now CUPE knows 3 things:
1) parents support them (we always did)
2) other unions support them
3) shutting down schools will absolutely get results
Better pay them Stevie. They deserve it and you’ve lost.
Housing prices are out of control. Gas prices are skyrocketing. New hospital beds sit empty because we don’t have enough nurses. Schools are in disrepair. Minimum wage is falling behind inflation faster than ever.
This is what “getting it done” looks like for
@fordnation
.
The sale of Twitter to Elon Musk may mean the end of my days on this platform. If he does require authentication of “real people” as he puts it, that will make it impossible for me to continue. My anonymity is vital to protecting my family.
Educators: please stop being so hard on yourself. It's ok to take a sick day. It's ok to not have your lessons perfectly planned out. It's ok to have technical difficulties. You are human. You are doing your best. We know that. We know you love our kids. They love you right back.
This Service Ontario move to Staples is so drenched in corruption. Union jobs are getting cut for lower paying ones, the bid was never put out to tender, and, not surprisingly, the contract was awarded to a Ford donor.
It’s disgusting.
#BREAKING
news: Ontario Math Curriculum will see an update starting September 3rd. The new curriculum will be reducing the standard length of 2 meters to a variable number between 0 and 1 meter, where possible.
Why wait until now to announce this closure of schools? Easy: to wait until educators are on break and then force them to scrap their week off to scramble to get online materials prepared. This government’s primary agenda is to break educators. The evidence is damming.
If golf courses aren’t safe, schools aren’t safe.
If local shops aren’t safe, schools aren’t safe.
If barber shops and nail salons aren’t safe, schools aren’t safe.
If everything else stays closed, why would schools reopen? Stop the union bashing,
@fordnation
and do your job.
What’s the word for someone who steals over $5,000 from you and then gives you a $0.65 per hour raise you should have gotten 3 years ago and expects you to be grateful?
Sure, some teachers make $100K. But if you went to school for 6+ years after HS, then worked PT for years JUST to get an interview for full-time, all while paying thousands for upgrade courses on your own time, then work 10+ years, and you're NOT making $100K? Something's wrong.
The Ford government will not only take away CUPE’s legal right to collective bargaining, they are also going to fine CUPE workers 10% of their annual wages per day of striking.
Bullies. Lawbreakers. The whole bunch.
Don’t be distracted by this March Break crap. It’s nothing more than an attempt by this corrupt gov. to pick a fight. They know contracts prevent them from forcing teachers to work March break. They just want to be able to say things like “teachers unions refuse to be flexible”.
None of your rights have been infringed. If they were, the place to fight that would be in court.
What you’re doing is protesting something you don’t like. We all don’t like it. But most of us are mature enough to realize that sometimes you have to do things you don’t like.
For those who have started following me in the last year or so, just a warning: I will be talking A LOT about the upcoming Ontario Education Worker negotiations. It’s how Ontario Dad got started and I’m a proud supporter of our education workers!
I hope you are too.
$4800 ($200 x 24 students) per classroom stolen from our education system to bribe parents during a contract negotiation.
That’s how little Lecce thinks of public education.
Whatever his actual job is, Lecce is not the Minister of Education.
When you say Ford is the lesser of the three evils, I have to ask, what is it you think is going to happen with an NDP government in power? Better schools and hospitals? A living wage? Stronger worker rights?
What do you fear an NDP government will do to make you vote PC?
The leafs played a real good game tonight. It’s not their fault they lost. It’s 100% the fault of the teachers unions. Or borders. Yeah, definitely borders.
Imagine having to fight every four years just to keep the same job, same pay, and same working conditions? And imagine your boss going on television and twitter and telling everyone all you care about is money? No one would stand for a business treating their employees that way.
Occupiers: if a business chooses to keep vaccine passports in place after the government ends their requirement, will you respect their freedom to choose without intimidation?
My DMs are flooded. 30+ classes. 4, 5, even 6 classrooms sitting empty in each school. Teachers not given any idea of what course, grade, or # of students they are teaching. Being told they can't speak out. It's September. This is 100% because of 5 months wasted by
@sflecce
.
Please don’t attack Lecce’s intelligence in all of this. To attack his intelligence is to let him off the hook for his actions. He knows exactly what he’s doing.
To all education workers: thank you. The fight you have taken on means so much to all of Ontario even if some don’t recognize it. Know that while you lead the charge, you are not alone. We know today is hard, and we know tomorrow will be even harder.
We stand with you.
Government to Business Owners: we'll shut you down if you don't put up plexiglas, provide proper PPE to your staff, limit the number of customers, and ensure all are 2 m apart, all on your own dime.
Gov to schools: That costs too much for US to do.
If you’re still saying “teachers are selfish, they strike when they don’t get what they want,” you clearly didn’t pay attention for the last year. None of this was what education workers wanted, but they show up every day and do a damn fine job. So shut up and be grateful.
Things parents should care more about than what pronouns their teens use:
- bigger class sizes
- sweltering classrooms
- reduced supports
- deteriorating buildings
- reduced course offerings
- violence in schools
But sure, their pronouns are most important, right?
With
@sflecce
's comments that teachers are 2m apart from students at the front of the class all day, he's not only shown his ignorance of what teachers do, but he's also ignored the hardworking EAs who are in close contact with students constantly. This MoE is dangerous.
I just checked, and as far as I know I can continue to use Twitter without spending a dime. So you can bet this Twitter user is going to do everything in my power to rally the voters and get that lying, manipulative, self-serving, corrupt, negligent, teacher-hater out of office.
If schools are so essential, why did the Ford government spend its pre-pandemic years defunding them? Why do they continue to defund them? Why did Ford cut the salaries of the people who run them?
If it’s so important for kids to be in class, why was e-learning made mandatory?
Showing up to a political event intent on silencing the candidate is not exercising your free speech. It’s terrorizing a group of people for the sole purpose of intimidation and hate. That’s not democracy.
Ford is refusing the help of the Red Cross because he doesn’t want to look like he doesn’t have things under control. A good leader would take the help.
A good leader doesn’t put their pride above the lives of their citizens.
I drove through a sea of purple today. DROVE.
The protest was huge, and my ability to navigate the road in my vehicle was completely unimpeded.
See how it’s done?
If the Ford government wants mandatory clubs, sports, and field trips in schools, they should pay for it. Otherwise they should shut up and be thankful that education workers have been and continue to volunteer their time and money to make those things happen.
I don't talk about them often, but I just wanted thank all of the principals and vice principals out there who have already had one of the hardest years ever. I'm sure you'll have to talk to lots of angry parents this year, and I want you to know that you are appreciated.
If I told you there was a building that had a bunch of people in it that might be asymptomatic and there was little chance of social distancing, poor ventilation, and was known for having a lack of handwashing supplies, would you go in for 5 min? What about 7 hrs? That's school.
Let’s make one thing clear
@fordnation
: any success the schools have seen in keeping COVID-19 from spreading has been because of the tireless work education workers are doing DESPITE your government’s lack of support and planning.
When the government tries to force their “deal” on underpaid education workers and refuses to negotiate further, remember that you voted for a bully.
When schools shut down because it’s the only choice those workers have, you have only yourself to blame, Conservative voters.
I'm just so angry and frustrated right now.
@Sflecce
, you aren't listening. You aren't doing what needs to be done. And to make it worse, you're vilifying the unions to push your agenda. Your announcement was insulting.
Hey teachers: We're going to give you new Covid stuff to teach. And you're going to have 5 different grades in 1 class. And you lose your prep. And here's new math curriculum. Oh and we'll let you know your classes in September so you have no time to plan. Come on, step up!
If Lecce really cared about giving every student a chance to succeed, he would lower class sizes. If he really cared about inclusion, he would scrap EQAO. If he cared about equity, he would give the same raise to female dominated professions as he does to male ones.
If teaching was so easy, no one would ever quit from burnout, retire early, have to go on stress leave, get injured on the job, or leave to go to another industry. Yet they are. A lot.
Stop with “teachers have it easy.”
If it’s easy, go to school for 6 yrs and join them then.
For those who say it's not worth fighting: Class sizes were going to be 28. E-learning was going to be mandated at 4. Schools were only going to get a few million for soap and sanitizer. No one was going to get PPE. Advocacy works. Let's keep fighting to reduce class sizes.
We took our son to the local splash pad. We gave him strict instructions on social distancing. While there, he was the ONLY kid doing any kind of social distancing. One child was filling their mouth with water and spitting it at other kids. But hey, school should be fine, right?
These protests are not fighting for “equal rights” for the unvaxxed. They are fighting for preferential treatment of the unvaxxed at the expense of the rest of us.
I hear complaints that teachers fight with every government and are never happy, but if you look closely their salaries haven’t kept up with inflation in decades and class sizes keep getting higher.
Would you put up with more work and less pay every year without a fight?
Notice how the only thing Lecce cares about is “keeping kids in class”. Not:
- the quality of their education
- the working conditions of staff
- the deteriorating conditions of schools
- the lack of supports for students
He just wants to keep parents at work. That’s it.
So many people I know who went 2 years COVID free are suddenly getting sick. Almost like there was a major shift in something a few weeks back.
But hey, at least freedom and all that, right?
“He has done everything in his power to make sure schools can move forward” - sure,
@fordnation
, sure.
Lecce is the worst MoE this province has ever seen.
Wasn't it this government who cancelled sex education around Trans rights and Trans phobia? Wasn't it this government that cancelled Indigenous content in our schools? Wasn't it this government who cancelled funding for ASD kids? Who really needs to "get on board" here?
