My Da carrying the coffin of Gerald Donaghy. Uncle Jim and uncle Jackie walking behind. Got our windows put in that night. Da put metal grills up. Windows put in when the grills were taken off for years afterwards. Just because he carried the coffin. Memories of

Tyrone GAA superstar giving tips to
@PearsesDerry
U14 lads tonight. What a genuinely humble and brilliant young man. Absolute credit to his community. Who said you should never meet your heroes ? Gave freely of his time and nothing was a problem. Legend.
Well done tonight Galliagh. Wanes of 12+ years of age burning cars in their own community. One of them
belonged to my 80 year old uncle. Your parents must be very proud of yous. Who’s behind this/ orchestrating this ? Your own community ffs 🤬
Every child in the waterside/derry side should be allowed to experience hurling/camogie. That feeling when you hit a ball just right is something that will leave a mark with them for life. Another great morning in foyle arena
@PearsesDerry
Us Doire wans made very welcome by the Breffni park stewards today.
This man in particular, Barney Cully, an Arvagh man - a credit to
@CavanCoBoardGaa
. Top man.
They say you should never meet your heros. But last night I met
@ConorMcManus_15
in
@peadarsderry
and I was like a kid in a sweet shop.
He is as nice a fella as he is a brilliant footballer. Absolute class act on and off the pitch 💪
@UlsterGAA
Folks we had Kevin Hinphey down helping Doire Trasna start up hurling again. He is fantastic. I don’t know what you’re paying him but double it and get another four of him. The potential for hurling/camogie in this city is huge and untapped.
Mentioned to
@saoirsenash
that the young buck was interested in reff’ing. Blitz at Séan Dolans today &
@trasnaman
took him under his wing. What a great role model to have in our parish. Gives all & expects nothing. True Gael.
@PearsesDerry
This is Decky Foley
@BBCRadioFoyle
He is from the city. Couple of decisive catches and a point late on from him helped Doire to victory today. There were 2 city men up front when Padraig Nelis came on.

Comhghairdeas le Lorcan Ó Dochartaigh - current
@PearsesDerry
U14 who won the Doire county B Championship with Na Magha this evening. He got a knock on the ankle last Sunday with NM but played U14 & U16 for Pearses this week as he didn’t want to let his coaches or his teams down.
Proud daddy day - even though it was through the fence. Senior debut with
@NaMaghaCLG
. He’s had some brilliant coaches along the way : Ciarán McCarron, Toe McLaughlin,
@BreandyQuigley
& Tomás Lally.
Ulster Hurling development officer Kevin Hinphey had the small matter of a Division 2B final with Doire today. He still managed to come in to Foyle Arena this morning to coach the
@PearsesDerry
youngsters. Making young waterside Gaels happy. Top man. Bualadh bos 👏
History made this morning. In 1888 St Patrick’s GAC from the waterside played an exhibition hurling match out in Claudy. After this event
@ClaudyGAC
were formed.
This morning after 134 years Claudy came back to play
@PearsesDerry
U9.5 & U7.5. What a morning. Sheer joy to watch.
The wain is 15 today. Time is flying. His ma, his granny, his teachers and his Hurling/Gaelic coaches have done some job on him so far. I’m only his taxi man. Happy birthday kid.
Wee Danny is 18 today. The quiet wee man is bigger than his Ma and Da now. His Ma, Grannies, Aunties, Uncles, teachers and club mentors have moulded him into a fine young man. Time flying. Proud of him. Happy birthday son.
Middle ‘wain’ scored his first senior point for Na Magha Wednesday night. Playing wing back. I missed it working down the country. Result didn’t go their way but a memory to keep.
This is what Doire hurling meant to a crowd of youngsters from
@PearsesDerry
in the waterside area of Derry city. Thanks to Kevin Hinphey for arranging the kids to play at HT.
@Doiregaa
- the hurling potential in the city is huge. Needs to be invested in and potential tapped.
RIP Larry Quinn. Well known builder Warwickshire. Born Ballybogey Rd, Ardmore. Never smoked. Lifelong pioneer. Life filled by hard graft, family, friends & craic. Retirement robbed by altzheimer’s. They don’t make them like him anymore. Some experience working for you uncle.
They were hurling up the Corrody road in 1890. We’re back hurling up the Corrody road.
Great to hear the clash of ash and happy children playing our National sport on a Tuesday night
@PearsesDerry
Massive GRMA to the
@NaMaghaCLG
lads Keelan, Rurrs and Danny for bringing the Richie McElligott trophy over to the
@PearsesDerry
First Communion this morning. Top men 👌
Young Lorcan Doherty of
@PearsesDerry
and
@NaMaghaCLG
scoring a goal for Doire U15s v Dhún Na nGall. Normally a half back. His Donegal granny Dunnion will not be happy 😬
Kevin Hinphey down taking hurling training in Doire Trasna this morning.
Someone needs to clone this man multiple times. Every club in County Derry should have access to a Kevin Hinphey.
Brilliant with our youngsters. Top man.

@UlsterGAA

@derryjournal
there’s 5 Na Magha men who have all featured in this Doire U20 campaign. Semi final in Richie McElligott All Ireland B tomorrow. Not a column inch. Surely this is a city hurling success story ?
Christy Ring on Sunday not a word. Very poor on hurling.
During
#NationalApprenticeshipWeek2023
we proudly celebrate the success of our 🌟past pupils 🌟 who are enjoying the benefits of an apprenticeship pathway.
Long road back for the buck.
12th Sept 21 broken collarbone.
Starts and plays full game tonight. Result didn’t go their way but he’s glad to be back.
#resilience
It should be normal for a game of hurling to be played on a Wednesday night in the waterside area of Derry. Thanks to both teams for entertaining us 👏

What have
@BBCRadioFoyle
sports dept got against hurling ? Arsenal, R’ham, Everton, Gb Olym F’ball, England Cricket “brilliant “, Anthony Joshua this morning ….morphing into an English sports station. Is this sports editorial policy ?

U20 HURLING FULL-TIME:
Sligo 1-16
Derry U20s: 2-19
Goals either side of the break, from Shea Cassidy and Padraig O’Kane, take Derry to an All-Ireland U20B hurling final with win in Sligo.
Well done lads 🇦🇹💪
#WeAreDerry
Been an enjoyable journey watching the young buck on his
@NaMaghaCLG
hurling career so far. Great night last night at the Doire GAA Gala dinner.
Big speeches from Ulster GAA president
@CMcLStrabane
and Doire Ops Manager
@henryjoystephen
about where they want Doire Hurling.
The wee man first went to Clones when he was 5 months in his mother’s womb. Ulster semi final v Donegal 2006. Not the result we wanted that day.
He’s man big now and the excitement is building. Heading to the match with his mates on the club bus.
C’mon Derry !

U9 hurlers getting end of year awards this morning in foyle arena from our All Ireland winning coach Danny.
Big thank you to all our coaches and parents for their commitment this year.
@PearsesDerry
Tough conditions in Burt for
@PearsesDerry
U16 friendly. Lightening when we landed, rain and savage wind.
Lads battled hard against the wind well in first half and took full advantage second half.
Caolán, Tomás and Ray developing a resilient wee team there.
Maith sibh lads.
Lot of decent people in Tullyalley. Lot of kids stirred up by politicians who after this will still have their salaries, freebie holidays, multiple rental homes etc. Meanwhile kids with little prospects after criminal record & community relations reduced to tatters. Nice work.

@BBCRadioFoyle
no mention of Doire v Cill Mhantáin hurling tomorrow in Owenbeg. Local man Deaglan Foley of
@NaMaghaCLG
been coming off bench for Doire & doing well. Golf, Dundalk, Sligo, Bohs and Wimbledon mentioned. Mention our Local sports stars please !
Delighted for Glen and delighted for my old boss Donal McKenna. Donal’s father was a founding member of Watty Grahams.
Every day working for Donal normally started with a conversation about Doire GAA.
Brilliant man. Brilliant club.
Finvola is in her 80th year. She’s had a wee fall yesterday and broken a few bones. Surgery today. Talking like nothing happened and she could do a day’s work. All she wants up is her prayer book and her glasses. These hill women are made of tough stuff.
One of the best decisions wife and I ever made, getting our two lads involved with Na Magha. The coaching is top notch. The difference in them in 5/6 years is unreal. The younger the better !
Brilliant day y’day
@ClaudyGAC
. Youngsters hurling away enjoying themselves. Huge GRMA to Pól MacBrádaigh for organising.
C’mon
@Doiregaa
&
@UlsterGAA
let’s get more coaches in the primary & 2ndary schools. The appetite is there for hurling in the city

Dandered over the town to meet my daughter for a jar. Beardy doorman at the Dungloe says not tonight.
Thanks a million chief we had a great night in the Gweedore.

No. 1 wain is full of beans all week since starting Mothers and Others. All I’ve heard is ‘coach Ray said this, coach Alan said that’. She’s buzzing. Brilliant initiative for the female members of our club and community. GRMA

When I seen another DUP man getting the Mayoral role I thought ‘here we go again, the buck that stood under the Para flag. This’ll be good’.
How wrong I was. You have been impressive as Mayor of our city. Breaking down barriers and accepting of all. Fair dues young man 👏
We picked some night for my son Ollie’s first trip to the Brandywell!
Seven goals and a scintillating performance of attacking football 🔥 👏🏻
Thanks to all at
@derrycityfc
for having us 🔴⚪️
What kind of warped society celebrates the murder of citizens of their own city. Time to get real and put a stop to this - ban all marching in the city until these displays stop.
Incredible catalogue of members of RUC & UDR involved in multiple murders. Stolen weapons.Lenient sentences. Charges not brought. Families getting little/no justice. Witnesses not interviewed. Prolific killers leading charmed lives especially Jackson.
It really was a dirty war.
My wee grand niece and cousin’s daughters who were playing GAA in Warwickshire tonight. Class photo of happy faces. Donegal, Derry, Cork & Tyrone blood.
God rest Seán Mellon, used to regularly reminisce about hurlers from the waterside. Him and Hugh Breslin remember the boys like the Nashes and Mark Duddy from the 80s. Them men are starting a quiet revolution in the waterside. I’m sure Seán would be smiling to himself up there 🙏
Foyle cup memories. 8 years ago today. Top of the Hill Celtic.
Paddy Logue in the background. Great man and great coach.
Wains lucky to have fantastic coaches like him and others over the years.

Quicker lockdown is over the better. Have to pay youngsters to do any jobs. Got them painting garden furniture and shed this evening. Oldest buck said he was only contracted for 1 coat. Youngest buck negotiated overtime for the two of them. Waiting on union visit next.

Congratulations to the year 11/12 Gaelic team who beat Crana College 2-11 to 0-5 in the Pat King Cup to progress to the quarter-finals. Well done to you all 🎉

He’s turning in to a fine young man, thanks to all his coaches, teachers, mentors, mammy and grannies.
