First day....✅
Proud and honoured to officially take up the role as Northumbria Police & Crime Commissioner today. 🤝
I've met with
@CCJardineNP
& the wider OPCC team to discuss my priorities, and the hard work to deliver safer streets & stronger communities starts now.

I’m delighted to announce that following last week’s selection process, Vanessa Jardine is my preferred candidate to become

Thank you to our outstanding
@northumbriapol
officers working at today’s demonstrations in Newcastle. Thank you to those that protested peacefully and respectfully making your voices heard in the fight against racism and inequality. To the violent thugs under a banner (1/2)
It’s disgraceful that one Tory MP (Chris Chope) has blocked a Private Members Bill to make upskirting a criminal offence, he also blocked another government-backed bill to make it a specific criminal offence to attack police dogs and horses. Theresa May needs to sort this NOW
#FinnsGotTalent
. Delighted to see the brilliant Finn and his special friend Dave on
#BGT
Ive been a huge supporter of

which sees protection for service animals. Finn certainly is heroic. Find out more about Finn’s law

My office is aware of comments made online in relation to recording women as victims of crime. I want to make clear women will continue to be recorded in our police & crime data, and victims given the support they need.
I know
@northumbriapol
are also aware of your concerns.
of protecting the city and its monuments- These things were never at risk, that was clear from the start. Your violent, racist behaviour is disgusting, abusing and hurling bottles at police and peaceful people is unacceptable. You don’t speak for our region and never will (2/2)
🚌 Caitlin just wanted to catch the bus… 💔
By justifying behaviour as ‘just being friendly,’ it minimises the experiences of women and girls.
Normal everyday exchanges that lead to women adapting their routines to stay safe without questioning the injustice.

This is a critical issue and an internal review for a few weeks with a couple of barristers and judges added on is unlikely to bring the independence essential for victims of domestic abuse and the public.
Delighted to have my preferred candidate,
@VJardineWMP
, confirmed by the Northumbria Police & Crime panel at Gateshead Civic Centre today. 👏
Vanessa will take up the role as
@northumbriapol
Chief Constable in spring 2023. 🚓
Police officers and staff do an exceptional job every day with some officers giving the ultimate sacrifice to keep us safe. TrIbutes will be paid to those officers today at the National Police Memorial Day. Thank you to all in the police service who put our safety above theirs.
1. It is an utter disgrace that myself, local council leaders and our police force found out about tightening of the North East Covid restrictions on the news.
2. You can’t blame people for being confused when the PM doesn’t know which way is up!
The government must to do better
Well done to Dave and Finn on
#BGTFinal2019
, great performance. Finns law really will make a difference and I’ve been a proud campaigner, supporting
@K9Finn
to see this legislation implemented, which will happen next week.
I'm delighted Dame Vera will succeed me. I've worked closely with her over the years. She's a passionate, articulate advocate for victims & brings experience & understanding of justice system as a lawyer & ex Solicitor General. She'll work tirelessly & be powerful voice 4 victims
Today is
#999DayUK
. I’d like to say a massive thank you to all who work for emergency services, who go above & beyond what is expected of them day in day out. Our emergency services staff are there when we need them most -they really do make a difference.
I grew up in the west end of
#Newcastle
& we never had any facilities like the
@NU_Foundation
! What a place to show
@AngelaRayner
around to see the YOLO project in action. The power of football can take kids off the streets & give them the chance to be part of something positive
Today I have been Northumbria PCC for a year. I’m proud of achievements like the establishment of our Northumbria Violence Reduction Unit, the recruitment of hundreds of officers and our Covid-19 response. Much achieved but lots still to do. Thank you for continued support.
Absolute pleasure to welcome the
@HouseofCommons
Speaker, Rt Hon John Bercow MP to Newcastle tonight to deliver the first
@NorthumbriaPCC
lecture. Brilliant, thought provoking speech. Mr Speaker went down a storm with the audience. Thanks to everyone who attended.
1⃣1⃣0⃣0⃣officers 𝙘𝙪𝙩 through Government austerity.
Only 6⃣1⃣5⃣ officers 𝙧𝙚𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙘𝙚𝙙 through Govt uplift.
So that leaves us 𝙢𝙞𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜 4⃣8⃣5⃣ officers - a 𝙢𝙖𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙫𝙚 number.
We've asked
@ukhomeoffice
to rightly fund these....and their response.....𝙣𝙤.
I hope Justice Secretary,
@DavidGauke
, Government Ministers and MPs read this article. I will be writing to
@davidgauke
urging him to take immediate action....... Scandal of women on trial with no sanitary protection:
Welcome back..... 🏍🚨
Residents have been calling for this, and so I'm delighted to see
@northumbriapol
deliver it.
After 15yrs, our Motorcycle Unit is crewed once again.
Tackling ASB, improving road safety, educating drivers & riders, engaging the public & more. ✅️
Investing in young people and fighting the deprivation and poverty holding some back is key to fighting crime.
The work undertaken by the
@SAFCFoL
does just that - they develop young people’s talents, give them life skills & set them up for a positive future. (1/2)
Improving lives to prevent crime. Today I launched my Northumbria Violence reduction unit. Here’s a little insight into why I’m taking this public health, preventative approach and why working with and listening to communities is so vital to reduce crime.
Please take a few moments to read this article in the Telegraph (by Jamie Merrill), about how rape victims are dropping allegations over fears defence lawyers will use mobile phone data against them. Urgent action...
My statement on the ongoing disorder in
#Sunderland
. 👇
This is not reflective of the people of Sunderland, or our region.
Thank you to
@northumbriapol
& all involved in the response.
We are aware of ongoing disorder in
#Sunderland
city centre.
We advise members of the public to avoid the area while officers deal with the situation.
Further updates will follow.
Thankfully, today’s protests passed largely without incident - a credit to Newcastle & all its proudly diverse people.
My thanks go to our hardworking police & partners who have been working tirelessly to protect our city & ensure protests can take place smoothly & peacefully.
Announcement time...
Today I’ve awarded £1M in funding for local, specialist victim services.
I'm committed to helping provide accessible, high quality support to victims of crime so they can move forward with their lives.
Today marks my first 100 days as Northumbria PCC. There is lots to do but I’m forming a plan and there is plenty of good work already underway. Read more here:
Just on my way to
@northernprideuk
Really looking forward to the annual ‘blue-light’ breakfast, which brings the emergency services together. Throughout Pride officers will be talking to people, reinforcing that we take a zero tolerance stance against hate crime. Happy Pride.
Please stay at home, to stay safe, to protect our wonderful
@NHSuk
. But also, stay home to support
@northumbriapol
and other police forces. Don’t put them under the additional pressure of enforcing a lockdown. They need to be there to fight crime and protect the vulnerable.
Thank you, Northumbria.
It’s an honour to have been re-elected, & I am 100% committed to working with you to fight crime & prevent crime across Northumbria.
Lots of updates to come, but please do let me know if there’s anything in particular you’d like to know more about. 👇
This week I’ve heard too much about women being spiked or terrified they will be spiked on a night out. To spike someone is to poison them! It is dangerous and is too often linked to sexual violence. I’ve had reassurance that
@northumbriapol
investigate every reported incident
Welcome to Northumbria,
@VJardineWMP
. 📍
Delighted to introduce the new Chief Constable for
@northumbriapol
, CC Vanessa Jardine. 🚔
More news about Vanessa's first days in force will be shared shortly, in the meantime, please welcome Vanessa to our fabulous force area. 👋
Heard so much praise from runners, spectators and organisers about
@northumbriapol
and the part they’ve played keeping everyone at the
#greatnorthrun2019
safe today. Thank you for all you do.
📸 A few more pictures from a brilliant day at the
#GreatNorthRun
. We've loved meeting all the brave runners, spectators and local residents who've all once again played a huge part in this special event!
Congratulations to everyone who ran - see you next year! 👮♀️👮♂️
I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone
#HappyNewYear
. Thanks to all
@northumbriapol
staff and officers who are on duty tonight and to all emergency services staff who will be working. Stay safe and enjoy the celebrations.
We need a clear message on lockdown.What we have is a confusing halfway house between lockdown & normality where people will travel more & spend more time in public spaces.This will be very difficult for police to enforce.Our police are there to keep us safe.Urgent clarity needed
Tonight I’ve been with
@NU_Foundation
in North Shields hearing about the fantastic Kicks project my office has helped fund - seeking to reduce crime and ASB through football and constructive activities for many young people and making a positive difference in our communities.
Our firefighters do an amazing job and there when we need them most. Today is Firefighters Memorial Day which I am supporting, remembering the bravery and sacrifice of the 2,524 Firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty

@fbunational
It all adds up.
71% of women of all ages in the UK have experienced some form of sexual harassment in a public space. ❌
Today, in the

My first newsletter is now out. Grab a coffee, have a read and find out what I have been doing in my first two weeks as your Police and Crime Commissioner.
Our police and emergency services, along with health-workers are the front line in our national response to Covid-19. Testing needs to be made available to these people. I’ve written to the Prime Minister to request this be put in place with urgency.
I’m devastated that the famous Sycamore is gone.
I am incandescent that this looks like a deliberate act of vandalism.
That tree was ours. An iconic North East landmark.
@northumbriapol
are at the scene and I’ll be raising this personally today.
Thank you to
@NPSpecials
James and Henry for showing me what you do. It was great to spend time with you. Special Constables are such a valuable asset to
@northumbriapol
- these two love being specials and dedicate their time to supporting the force and keeping Northumbria safe.
Delighted to be named an ambassador for
@NEYouth_
-an organisation dedicated to inspiring young minds to learn and develop, away from the chaos and problems of everyday life - leading to brighter futures. I look forward to working with you in your 85th year of doing great things.
✅VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS STRATEGY LAUNCHED✅
So many voices, experiences and supportive ideas have helped shape this plan and I am thankful to them all.
This plan is about solutions.
It sets out our stall with everything we need to be doing to drive real change.
Great evening with the Whitley Bay Street pastors alongside
@NormaRedfearn
and
@alancampbellmp
. These wonderful volunteers give their Friday and Saturday evenings to make sure everyone has a safe night out at the coast and makes it home ok. A great support to
@northumbriapol
.
😡The North East cannot afford this!
Hike in energy prices = worsened poverty + widened equality.
If rising rip-off energy tariffs aren’t pushing people into poverty I don’t know what is! The struggle is real. And it just got worse. Urgent action is needed.
Here is my letter to the new Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, if he is serious about making changes he needs to make ending austerity his number one priority and strengthen our public services. Local residents want a properly funded police force.
It’s time ASB victims were eligible for the support they deserve.
I hate expressions that downplay the effect on people, such as “victims of low level crime”.
A victim repeatedly targeted with ASB can reach breaking point and needs support
@DailyMirror
As we head towards Christmas Day, I would like to thank all our incredible
@northumbriapol
staff, officers and all emergency services staff who will be on duty making sure we remain safe - you’re commitment and dedication is second to none.
Opening today’s conference in
#Newcastle
on a public health approach to reducing crime - Violence is not inevitable, it is in large parts predictable and, together, we can prevent it.
#safeguardingNCL
Very sad to hear that the brilliant Ron Hogg has passed away. Ron was a great guy who served his community with passion and commitment throughout his entire career and campaigned for people til the end. My thoughts are with Ron’s family. He’ll be missed
Brilliant to see that Sue Pearce’s hard work over many years at Rape Crisis Tyneside and Northumberland
@rapecrisistn
has been recognised with an MBE. Well done to local fire fighter Thomas Richardson who was honoured with the Queens Fire Service Medal
@Tyne_Wear_FRS
Wow. What an incredible day. 🏃☀️🌧️
A 𝙃𝙐𝙂𝙀 well done to everyone who took part today, and of course a massive thank you to everyone involved in making it possible.
Especially to
@My_Metro
,
@northumbriapol
&

following the challenging late weather. ☔️
This
#999day
, I would like to thank all
@northumbriapol
officers, staff & volunteers who despite the challenges faced this year, continue to protect & keep us safe.
On B.Hol I had the pleasure of joining
@NPSpecials
to see the key role volunteers play in our force.
Thank you💙
100 years ago today, thanks to suffragettes such as Emily Wilding Davison and other campaigners some women gained the right to vote. Let’s not forget what they achieved, whilst we continue to campaign for women’s equality.

It's been great getting out and about this week across

Thank you to
@northumbriapol
for their incredible work and policing operation of the Wear-Tyne derby yesterday. 🔴⚪️🚔⚫️⚪️
Our staff & officers, along with several supporting forces, delivered a professional, safe and seamless day for all. 🤝
Morning! What to wear? Wear red and show your support for anti- racism charity Show Racism the Red Card.🟥
I’ve seen just how brilliant they are
working in our schools, football clubs and communities to stamp out racism.

Good news to share...Today we’ve awarded more than a quarter of a million pounds to nearly 100 local organisations through my Coronavirus Response Fund. That includes those helping young people, domestic abuse victims and community projects looking after vulnerable people. (1/2)
That’s a busy bank holiday over, weather has been great with lots going on across the region. Thanks to all our
@northumbriapol
officers,
@NPSpecials
and staff who have been working hard to support local events and keep us safe. Each and every one of you make a real difference.👍
Sad to hear that Stephen Hawking, renowned scientist has died at the age of 76. His knowledge, dedication and determination made a real difference. A great physicist who brought science to a global audience.
Congratulations to Susan Dungworth who has been elected as the new Northumbria Police & Crime Commissioner.

As Volunteers’ Week comes to an end, I want to offer so many thanks to the people who help support the work of my office and of course, our police force.

NORTHUMBRIA POLICE – RATED BEST IN THE COUNTRY.
Northumbria’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Dame Vera Baird QC, has commended the force for its dedication to the public after a national survey of community...
Today marks one year since the London Bridge attack. My thoughts are with those who lost their lives or were injured and their families. A special service will be held later today to remember the victims and thank the bravery of the emergency services.
👏👏 Making the North East proud 👏👏. Huge well done to PC Threadgold and PC Sharpe who collected their police bravery award tonight. Once again
@northumbriapol
officers and staff showing how they are the very best.
