I can see a reasonable way for this to make sense. "alive" could be Boolean that gets its value set depending on how much health the player has, then this if statement calls the "kill" function that does the death

hl2 has a bug where when you bhop backwards the force that was supposed to stop you actually accelerates you, so if you walk backwards to the hand it moves backwards with you + x
