People often don’t understand that apartheid was just as much about ethnic animus as it was about racial, Afrikaners around the turn of the century were dirt poor, felt looked down on by British South Africans(Rhodes and his boys), and they decided they were going to use their political numbers to rig the situation to change that. They created the original BEE for South Africa, and hence the trajectory of the entire South African experience up to now. Apartheid was very much a state directed project meant to ensure that Afrikaners could reach a first world income status and shed their status as the weird ultra religious poor Africanized whites. State owned companies employed them in masses, university education was mass subsidized for them, government contracts handed out to benefit Afrikaner owned firms. It couldn’t be me.
