I spoke to a dozen fighters about the time they lost their perfect record — how they felt about it in the moment and, looking back, how they were able to overcome the hurdles of defeat.
The honesty from these athletes blew me away.
My latest,

:
Ngannou-Gane will be the first UFC undisputed heavyweight title fight that doesn’t involve either Stipe Miocic or Daniel Cormier since the Werdum-Velasquez fight in June 2015. That’s pretty wild.
Charles Oliveira's current UFC win streak:
Tony Ferguson
Kevin Lee
Jared Gordon
Nik Lentz
David Teymur
Jim Miller
Christos Giagos
Clay Guida
Michael Chandler's current UFC win streak:
Dan Hooker
How do some people think Chandler deserves a title shot before Oliveira?
In 2021, Demetrious Johnson told me he wanted to fight for 4 more years.
I asked him last week if he was on track -- if he would fight for 2 more years.
"That's not f-----g happening. ... F--- no."
In fact, his ONE fight on May 5 could be his last.
UFC legend Khabib Nurmagomedov and Clarence Seedorf are opening a youth soccer school in Toronto that integrates MMA within the soccer training, per a press release.
Plans are in place to launch additional locations across Canada.
Dana White told BT Sport he believes UFC fighters are now on the same level as athletes in the NFL, NBA, and MLB.
Hopefully this means a massive pay increase is coming...
It appears that Greg Hardy has been released
“What a run, ya boy is far from
done just got some fine tuning to do. Thank you to all my fans and haters. I appreciate you all. Mostly i appreciate my coaches, family, and the UFC for giving me the opportunity to shine bright”
If the UFC wants to do a 16-man tournament to crown a new lightweight champion (they won't), I've already got the bracket ready to go.
This would absolutely rock.
Random, unimportant thought: After 12 years, Bellator officially passes UFC in event numbers tomorrow night.
Bellator 266 goes down Friday, and UFC 266 takes place next weekend.
Robbie Lawler is 1-5 and Carlos Condit is 0-4 since their all-time classic at UFC 195 in January 2016. That stat makes me sad but it also makes me realize they both sacrificed their careers for that war and we should be forever grateful.
This is pretty cool. Adrian Yanez and Davey Grant and their teams went to dinner together after their “Fight of the Night” at
#UFCVegas43
yesterday.

I shouldn’t be surprised at this, but Michael Chiesa finds himself two spots below Neil Magny on the updated UFC rankings despite dominating Magny in January. 🤦♂️
Dana: "Sean Shelby missed that one. I saw it on social media and called him immediately. ... I was like, 'Dude, where was your head on that one?'"
Also Dana (again):
Humor me for a second: In your opinion, what's the biggest difference between the Paulo Costa situation and Nick Diaz wanting to move the Robbie Lawler fight to 185 a month ago? And why are we treating those so differently?
Khabib on if he ever contemplated returning since announcing his retirement in October: "No. Dana called this official (this week). But I retired five, six months ago. It's very funny."
Some personal news: After four years, this is my last week at

A GoFundMe has been set up for ex-UFC fighter Sean Spencer, whose vision in his left eye has “slowly eroded” after getting poked in the eye during a fight.
Surgery would completely restore his vision, per the post.
Spencer last competed in MMA in 2018.
One thing I wanted to say about tonight’s news: It’ll be on us, the MMA media, to make sure people don’t forget that Ngannou is the No. 1 heavyweight. The UFC will do what it can to push him out of the limelight, to convince that the Gane-Jones winner is the new king.
After Cody Garbrandt vs. Dominick Cruz in December 2016, who would've thought neither man would have a win by the first half of 2020? Pretty crazy if you think about it.
SMH… Imagine a rookie in the NBA had to start a GoFundMe to play..

After Joaquin Buckley's win last night, I decided to go back and watch dozens of the best knockouts since the start of 2015.
This is my list of the top 34 (don't ask why I picked that number). Let me know what I got right and what I got wrong, and maybe we can improve it:
Combate is reporting that the UFC wants to book Stephen Thompson vs. Khamzat Chimaev for the Dec. 19 main event in Las Vegas. Thompson has not yet agreed and Leon Edwards is considered another option.
The UFC broadcast said Stefan Sekulic has been out of action since September 2018 "largely" due to injury.
Actually, he tested positive for two banned substances and was suspended by USADA for two years.
Wish the UFC would be more upfront about these sorts of things on TV.
Nine years ago today, I launched my first MMA website, MMAjr. Had no idea at the time it would lead to an actual career in journalism. It's been a hell of a ride, from MMA Sucka to Bloody Elbow to theScore. Thank you to everyone who has helped me get here. Here's to nine more.
Diego Sanchez’s Instagram story from 25 minutes ago makes it sound like he is no longer under contract with the UFC.
Yesterday, Sanchez withdrew from his May 8 bout vs. Donald Cerrone for undisclosed reasons.
This video cracks me up.
(Also a good example of why you should limit the number of closed questions during interviews!)
Story on Kyoji Horiguchi coming to
@theScore
later today.
Dana can say what he wants, of course, but this is the quote that really gets me:
"The media can talk as much shit as they want. They don’t feed families. They don’t take care of f-cking people. They don’t have people that count on them. They don’t have people to support."
Ahead of 2020 season, PFL announces it has signed UFC veterans Justin Willis, Olivier Aubin-Mercier, Johnny Case, Clay Collard, Cindy Dandois, and Marcin Held. Also: Bellator vet Bubba Jenkins and Kamaru Usman’s brother Mohammed Usman
This quote from Dana White stands out to me:
"There are many reasons why I chose to go with Anheuser-Busch and Bud Light, most importantly because I feel we are very aligned when it comes to our core values and what the UFC brand stands for."
OK, Cody Garbrandt and Marlon Moraes are booked -- and not against Petr Yan.
Can we *finally* give Aljamain Sterling what has been rightfully his all along?
Stepping away from MMA coverage for a few months, as tomorrow I leave on a backpacking trip to Europe. My awesome co-workers will be holding down the fort at

Just remembered that seven years ago yesterday, I launched my own MMA website. Had no idea at the time it would lead to me finding my career, but I'm very glad it did. Here's to seven more.
UFC 300 is the first pay-per-view since UFC 281: Adesanya vs. Pereira 1 in November 2022 to not have a single fight canceled, per Tapology.
*knocks on wood*
It hasn’t been that long since a PPV has gone unscathed, but how lucky and remarkable is it that UFC 300 is fully intact.
.
@aaronbronsteter
asked Dana White why Souza wasn't taken off UFC 249 as soon as he said he'd been in contact with someone who likely had COVID-19.
"Because I didn't want to. It's my show. I'll do what I want to do. I didn't want to. I wanted to wait for the test to come in."
It’s unbelievable how quickly Adesanya has risen to the top level. He debuted in the UFC less than two years ago. I wrote a column after that fight suggesting UFC move him up slowly, that he wasn’t ready for the best (yet). I was so, so wrong.
Breaking: Khonry Gracie, the 23-year-old son of Royce Gracie, is set to return to the cage after a one-year layoff.
He will meet Trevor Gudde in a welterweight bout at Bellator 245 on Sept. 11 in Uncasville, Conn., per officials.
Demetrious Johnson said on Instagram an hour ago he’s already watched the fight three times. Probably not an easy watch. He’s clearly handling this loss very well.
Logan Paul has opened as a -200 favorite for a potential bout vs. Anderson Silva.
Silva just beat a real boxer. You’re telling me he’s not going to beat a YouTuber? Bruh.
From the chaotic opening ceremony to the brutal knockouts, KSW Colosseum 2 was unforgettable.
I wrote about my experience attending the extravagant MMA stadium show in Warsaw, Poland, this past weekend:

Just spoke to Brian Kelleher (
@brianboom135
), who told me a cool story about before his time in UFC.
He went to McGregor-Diaz 2 as a fan, and told himself he'd be there one day.
His next fight was in the UFC.
And four years later, he shared a card with McGregor.
Dana White on UFC fighters: "These guys can do whatever they want" because they're independent contractors.
The Reebok deal, among other things, would say otherwise.

#TheMMAHour
he believes the UFC’s top choice for the UFC 300 main event is Leon Edwards vs. Khamzat Chimaev.
Mentioned that DDP-Adesanya, DDP-Chimaev and Edwards-Muhammad are also all in play. The holdup appears to be Chimaev’s ability to fight in the U.S.
Well, we made it. It’s officially been a decade since I launched my own website and started covering MMA. Been a heck of a ride and just getting started. Really appreciate everyone who reads and (occasionally) watches and listens. Let’s go for two or three more, because why not?
MMA vet Josh Hill, who went 4-3 in Bellator dating back to 2020, wrote this in a social media post earlier this AM:
"Well, I guess all that talk from PFL about bringing all the Bellator fighters over after the purchase was just that ... talk.
"Thank you to Bellator and all the
@jedigoodman
Love that the interviewer completely misunderstood how PPV points work, thought it was fundamentally different to PPV points in boxing and just ran with it
Here's an interesting stat: Zero UFC champions have lost their titles in the cage in 2020.
That means, had it not been for Cejudo vacating at 125 and then at 135, and Jones vacating at 205, we would have every same champion at the end of 2020 as we did at the start.
Just had a random thought: Cyborg is still a free agent. UFC should sign her to a one-fight deal and do the Nunes rematch. Biggest fight for Nunes by quite a bit. Still probably the biggest fight you can make in women’s MMA. If Cyborg loses, let her go back to Bellator or to PFL.
One thing I wanted to say about tonight’s news: It’ll be on us, the MMA media, to make sure people don’t forget that Ngannou is the No. 1 heavyweight. The UFC will do what it can to push him out of the limelight, to convince that the Gane-Jones winner is the new king.
My beloved cat, Simba, was a fighter like no other — he truly had nine lives. Sadly, his time has come and gone...we said goodbye to him this morning after 16 years.
