If you want to revisit the India of the 1980s/90s, just walk into an Indian restaurant in Silicon Valley. You can tell the precise year in which the owners left India. Because that’s the year they’re still living in. Replete with Shemaroo videos & Mithun songs.
There was a time when any mention of the massacre of Muslims in the 2002 pogrom in Gujarat was met with “What about 1984?” Haven’t heard that in a while now. The pseudo concern for the massacre of Sikhs seems to have rapidly evaporated.

Note to Indian men. D’you ever joke about how badly you’re doing at work? How you’re about to be fired or demoted? No? Don’t find that funny? Then make sure you never joke about how the only thing you can cook is chai. Your incompetence in the kitchen isn’t funny either.
So I get a WhatsApp forward from a desi in Silicon Valley on how, if your spiritual vibration is higher than the vibration of corona virus, you won’t get infected.
A large number of Americans I’ve met had no idea India’s prime minister was once banned from entering the US on religious freedom grounds, for riots in his state as chief minister. And that, on being elected PM, the ban was lifted—by Obama.

I examine California’s case against Cisco, where 2 Brahmins are accused of discriminating against a Dalit colleague. Civil rights groups & a religious org have intervened. What’s at stake is the recognition of caste as a discriminatory category in the US.

Thread: Bengaluru is often called India’s Silicon Valley, in an aspirational sort of way. But maybe Silicon Valley should be a cautionary tale for India’s tech hub.
Unlike race, caste is not obvious from a person’s face or skin colour, so Dalit techies say they are constantly subjected to inquisitions from fellow Indians to figure their caste. Like the casual, seemingly innocent pat on the back to see if they’re wearing a Janaeu
Dalits students facing caste-based discrimination often feel US colleges won’t understand India’s caste system, so they don’t speak out. South Asians discriminating among themselves escapes American society. It doesn’t fit categories like race & gender that are better understood.

Dalits are outnumbered by upper castes at work. 90% of Indian immigrants to the US are upper caste. The complainant in the case against Cisco was the only Dalit in an upper caste team.
While artificial intelligence is being used to spotlight the needs of marginalised racial groups, AI is yet to detect caste, a form of inequality that goes beyond skin tones. And human intelligence at tech companies often fails to keep pace.
A Dalit techie who was a top performer in an America tech company once expressed his views on the Indian caste system and found his ratings at work dropped, he was increasingly isolated and finally transferred out of the country.
It’s unlikely that tech companies headquartered in liberal California, would cancel a talk on racism by a Black speaker on grounds that white people would feel threatened by race.

While in India, they were used to people directly asking them which caste they belonged to, in America, the questions are often less direct. Like asking a person if they are vegetarian. (Vegetarianism has long been associated with upper caste purity).

After a year-long campaign by students, teachers and civil rights groups, California State University (CSU)—the largest 4-year public uni in the US with 23 campuses and over 480,000 students, has included caste in its anti-discrimination policy.
Dalits who faced caste-based oppression, including torture, in South Asian countries told me of the deep disappointment they felt when encountering casteism on US campuses. It was a sort of re-traumatisation, a feeling that they could never escape their caste.
While America has no law against caste discrimination, the California Govt lawsuit against Cisco used a section of the historic Civil Rights Act, the outcome of African Americans’ struggle for equality in the 1960s. Dalits in the US owe a debt to African Americans says

If a Dalit is raped, it has nothing to do with caste. If a Muslim is raped, a list will be drawn of all Muslims in the world who have ever committed a crime, and liberals will be asked to comment on them all before they are allowed to speak up for a Muslim rape victim.

Dr Ambedkar, chief architect of India’s constitution, called caste a system of graded inequality. He described Hindu society as a tower which had several storeys without a ladder or an entrance. One was to die in the storey in which one was born
A growing number of American institutions, including Harvard University and California’s Democratic Party, have begun recognising caste as a protected category,
Google’s adoption of the Monk scale was unveiled by its India-born senior VP Prabhakar Raghavan. Ironically he & CEO Sundar Pichai, both raised in India, launched an initiative on skin tones during Dalit History Month, while their Co. cancelled an internal talk by a Dalit woman.
The lawsuit reminded a Dalit techie I spoke to, of all the cases of caste discrimination he had faced over 20 years in the US. “I never documented these instances, because I never thought caste discrimination would be taken seriously,” he says.
Nor for that matter would a tech company cancel a talk by an LGBT speaker over complaints that the talk would endanger straight people. Such a view would be dismissed as absurd, particularly in the San Francisco Bay Area, a region that has long championed gay rights in America.
The Silicon Valley Park I’m at with my son is so full of Indian aunties and uncles discussing recipes and watching cricket that I totally feel like I’m in India right now. Just in case anyone’s wondering why Sunnyvale is called Suraj Nagari.
The ease with which caste has been overlooked in Silicon Valley has much to do with America’s ignorance about South Asia’s caste system, one that is hierarchical in nature and divides society into four main castes within which there are countless sub castes.
The Indian Prime Minister is set to lay the foundation stone of the Ram Temple on the site where a Hindu mob destroyed a historic mosque 30 years ago. None of us will forget the riots that followed, riots whose scars have yet to heal.
Despite 2 HR investigations into the case, Cisco closed the investigations saying they had no evidence to prove caste discrimination, even after Iyer confessed to outing his colleague’s caste. The lawsuit calls Cisco’s actions fraudulent and malicious.
While America may be a land of opportunity, Indians on an H-1B find themselves living the abridged version of the American dream, or as one engineer put it, “the American dream through the H-1B wall.”
At the centre of the Cisco lawsuit are 2 men who were classmates at IIT-Bombay over 20 years ago. The upper caste student discovered his classmate was Dalit, and had made it to IIT via India’s affirmative action program, when he didn’t see his name on the “main merit list.”
