It may not always nice or necessary to question people's gender identity. But when a broadcaster is reprimanded for telling a factual truth **that is essential to the news story he is telling**, that's a sure sign that some people have lost the plot.

These are just questions. If you read them as attacks, you might want to ask yourself if this might be paranoia, and if so where it comes from. There are plenty more psychological, sociological, linguistic, and political questions we should be asking.

7 years ago Charlie Peters @CDP1882 , then a 1st-year student, highlighted the threats to academic freedom at @EdinburghUni . Seems time we stopped pretending this is a trivial or ephemeral problem, and embarked on a course of serious remedial action.

Nothing new about academics strongly disagreeing, especially on moral issues. Constructive disagreement has always been part of the point. Two horrid new things: 1. Hateful, uninformed, ad hominem denunciations. 2. Attempts to silence lecturers with no attempt at dialogue.

UCU's Jo Grady confirms what we already knew: that she is fundamentally unfit to represent academics. Like some other trojan horse activists within the union, she stubbornly refuses to recognize academic freedom as a core value.

This is a new low for Jo Grady (and UCU). She is the leading candidate for our 'Zero' for September, if not for 2023. Free speech, whether or not it is deemed offensive, is at the heart of academic freedom:

Crucial test for @EdinUni : third time around, will we finally show we are a mature, socially responsible campus where sensitive topics can be discussed in tolerant and open-minded ways without interference from censorious thugs?

Why, so soon after most educated people had learned to doubt the reality or relevance of something as fanciful and vague as the soul, did "soul" beliefs enjoy a sudden renaissance in the form of “true (gendered) self” ideology?

In 1697 an Edinburgh student was executed for "blasphemy". The public backlash against this abuse of theocratic power spurred on the Scottish Enlightenment. Will we see a similar backlash against the arrogant and abusive "hate crime" legislation?

Hard to imagine a more annoying, unfair, and embarrassing instance of spineless cancel culture in action. Alka has long been one of UK's leading advocates of nondivisive approaches to culture and identity. Racist "antiracists" are terrified of this.

Noteworthy that references to "true self", "real me", "authentic self" etc rose sharply from the 1990s, during the rise of the internet and social media. [extracted from Google Books Ngram viewer]

How sad but predictable that @CornelWest should insist that the colour of Claudine Gay's skin is more morally relevant than the content of her character. The bigotry of low expectations is alive and well, and it is destroying prospects of improved inter-ethnic relations in USA.

People prone to misrepresenting gender-critical views as "anti-trans" (or much worse) might care to listen to this and reflect. We need to disagree well if we are to make progress on social conflicts. That means not unfairly labelling and denouncing people so as to silence them.

"Transphobic" has become a hammer. It's the weapon of choice for gender ideology zealots. It seems that once you've learned to enjoy wielding this hammer, you no longer see a need for reasoned argument. And anyone not endorsing your version of gender ideology looks like a nail.

Been thinking and talking about the importance of free speech for longer than the past five minutes? Then sit back and relax to the joyfully frothy sounds of UCU, Owen Jones, Priyamvada Gopal et al, suddenly trying to grasp why it might matter even for them.

…This fad for racial profiling is of course socially toxic and divisive. In the UK, we have only ourselves to blame for adopting this foul habit from the USA. Here's Google's Ngram Viewer showing us clear evidence of the trends in USA and UK towards paranoid racialised lookism.
