You've got your jammies on and a cup of milk. You have a pile of picture books from the library to read. No school tomorrow. Your parents don't care if you stay up all night long. A perfect Summer night. You are 40 years old. The year is 2022.
📚 New tool for PB authors 📚
If you write picture book manuscripts in Google Docs, you may be interested in a free “Add-on” I created.
It auto-calculates word count (minus art notes) and includes a few formatting tools.
I’ll explain how to get it and use it. [thread]

Nothing worse than coming up with a great book idea, then learning that a well known author stole your idea, wrote the book, and published it years ago.
Good news: I wrote a new picture book!
Bad news: it’s not good.
Good news: it might become good in the future!
Bad news: I’m not sure how to make it good.
Good news: I have critique partners!

"How do you get an agent?"
"Well you work hard on your writing for several years."
"I'm willing to do that."
"Then you query over and over and deal with nonstop rejection."
"Worth it."
"Then you have a phone call."
"Phone call? Never mind."

Our bedrooms? They're book-rooms. The kitchen, the floor:
all books. And surprise, there's more

at the door.
1. Write picture book manuscript
2. Don’t query because you have too few manuscripts
3. Write new manuscript
4. Re-read old manuscripts and realize they’re not good
5. Repeat forever

Writing a picture book is like making a clay sculpture. The first draft is piling the clay into a horrible blob roughly approximating the desired shape. After that, there’s lots of removing and reshaping before you have something good.

Cheers to that critique partner who always gets your crap first drafts, probably thinks you’re a slightly crap writer, but doesn’t realize your stories get way better after their critiques!

Thrilled to announce that my newest story received a glowing review from a 3.5 year old, who said, "I really loved every part of it."

3 yo said she doesn’t like the 1st draft of my new PB.
Me: “Which part?”
Her: “The whole thing.”
Ok... at least she’s honest.
Me: “Maybe I’ll give up on this and start a new one.”
Her: “No! You can’t give up!”
Ok, she’s wise too.

Sounds my toddler can sleep through:
- Thunderstorms
- Barking dog
- Washer and drier
Sounds my toddler cannot sleep through:
- Me silently sitting down at my computer to write
Killing your darlings is tough any time,
but it hurts even worse if they happen to rhyme.
Okay, it does nothing to further the plot —
but that couplet required four hours of thought.

Just finished writing my first ever rhyming story.
Pros:
* It rhymes.
* It was fun to write.
* I can now say phrases like "anapestic tetrameter."
Cons:
* It took over a month.
* It's 780 words.
* Wife said she's leaving if I say "anapestic tetrameter" again.

Wonderful and unexpected consequence of writing a rhyming manuscript (and maybe reading it aloud a little too often):
Yesterday my 3.5 yo launched into a spontaneous recitation of several stanzas of my story, from memory, while laughing and loving it 😀.

My toddler accidentally made up a pretty good rhyming stanza during our car ride yesterday (while pointing out a cyclist with no helmet, as always)...
He's going to get sunburned, he's going to get hurt,
'Cause he's got no helmet and he's got no shirt.
Reiterating my SEO hack for supporting writing friends: rather than searching for Kate's (in this example) title, search "solar eclipse books for kids", scroll until you find her book, then click+buy. This teaches the site to rank her book higher in the results for that search.
Actual feedback I got on one of my picture books:
“Parts of this story felt too dark ... I suggest removing the following: dungeon, rats on a skeleton, open sewer, torture, bone dust, ornamental skull carvings, and chained people.”
Well yeah, when you put it THAT way...
How many American picture book readers are familiar with the work of Robert Munsch?
He has been a big influence on my writing. Hilarious / irreverent / surreal humor.
I assume he’s bigger in Canada than USA, but not sure.

"Uh... no... just all year round."
I proudly hit some major

career milestones this week:
1. Daughter asked me to read her my manuscripts at bedtime
2. Daughter turned to me with a BIG smile at a part of a story she loved
3. I overheard my daughter repeating a line from one of my stories to my wife

Flew to Florida, went to Disney, hopped on our first ride, and a family we know from back home was seated directly behind us. The ride? You guessed it... "It's a Small World."
Do you have trouble reading through your own picture book manuscripts without stopping to tweak something every... single... time? I can’t do it.

Last night I had that quintessential writerly experience where I woke up with an idea for a story, and had to write down. And let me tell you, this story is straight up kooky-dooks.

🛠What it does🛠
It automatically detects art notes, and shows you:
* Word count — text only
* Word count — art notes
* Word count — total
(Hopefully) this eliminates the need to manually track the word count of your art notes, subtract from your total, etc.
