Back in the day I got to do the grand finale scene for DreamWorks Spirit. I did the color key paintings to rough it out, then did 17 paintings in acrylic that were texture mapped onto a 3D model, high tech for back then. See followup post for painted panorama.
Despite trying out many tricky Photoshop brushes, I found that for me simpler is better. This uses the basic chalk brush, round soft brush and the smudge tool for blending.
Trying to get my paintings pushed further into color and design harmonies. The subject is inspired by a visit to Pinnacles reservoir in central California.
A scene I painted for DreamWorks Spirit, Stallion of the Cimarron back in the day. Acrylic on Crescent 100 illustration board. Still love to use the crescent board for wet media, beautiful surface.
Frame capture from DreamWorks The Road to El Dorado. I painted the background scene. This was in the pre-digital period of geological history, it was painted in acrylics.
To show how analog we were back in '96, the circles on the far left curtain were made by cutting an eraser to shape then dipping it into acrylic paint and using it as a stamp.
This a painted backdrop I did for DreamWorks The Prince of Egypt.
