I've been talking to some legal experts for their take on yesterday's Nature Restoration Law drama
Could the vote on this law be annulled? The answer seems to be no - and here's why 👇🧵
According to documents seen by
@EURACTIV
, the
@EU_Commission
chose to wait 6 months to publish their controversial study on the impacts of the

strategy mid-August. A political decision? Agri stakeholders say yes, Commission says no. Learn more👇

Agriculture and nature conservation can go together.
We need both.
That's why we would like to start a strategic dialogue on the future of agriculture in the EU.
#SOTEU
🌳🐿️ Adopted! EU Environment Ministers just validated the trilogue agreement on the

Law. This is the final step before this law can enter into force.

"An average block of cheese or loaf of bread produces less than a penny for farmers, and fruit producers do not fare much better, making just 3p from each kilo of apples" - which is why you should buy direct from your local producers whenever you can 🍎

said, adding scaring people into believing there are

Farmers are making their presence felt on the streets of Brussels today just outside the home of the Commission’s DG AGRI - who leads work on EU farming subsidies - and just a few doors down from where EU agriculture ministers are meeting
🚨 The European Parliament has rejected the proposal on the EU’s plan to slash the risk and use of pesticides in half - with rapporteur

calling this a “very dark day for the environment and farmers”
Farmers turned out in force on the streets of Brussels yesterday, but the question is why? I spoke to farmers to hear in their words why they’re protesting. Learn more in my

Many of us in Brussels know the pain of being far from our families. These past few months have been especially tough for me, with multiple family members in & out (mostly in) of hospital while I’ve been stranded passport-less. Today, after 3 long months, I can finally go home 🥳
VP
@TimmermansEU
is not holding back. "Who's really in a bubble? Those ignoring the climate crisis or those that know it’s difficult but doesn’t negate the very harsh facts?" he asks, stressing we "don’t have the luxury" of dismissing the crisis if we want to be 'good ancestors'

The European Parliament committee structure could be in for a shake up, according to sources. Includes:
🌱Splitting the envi committee in two (‘health’ & ‘environment’)
🩺 Upgrading health to a full committee
The idea is backed by the biggest group, the centre-right EPP
Ok, I might be biased but I'm hugely proud of my tireless

colleagues over the past week or so. Here's a snippet of the wonderful work they've been producing, including an interview with a Prime Minister & on the ground reporting from the Ukraine-Poland border 👇 (a 🧵)
“Let us live from our work” - If there’s one core message from the farmers protests, it’s this one.
I’ve spoken with all flavours of farmer - big, small, young - and this is at the root of their frustrations
The are farmers of all stripes, shapes & sizes here, conventional farmers alongside small scale farmers, who are currently on stage calling for more support for the agroecological transition, fair pricing and are rallying against free trade deals, such as Mercosur

Today’s my last day at
@Euractiv
–it was quite a ride! I'm very proud of what I achieved, have good memories, travelled a lot, and met some of my best friends there.
I even managed to give something to some people too. Who could ask for more?
Fare thee well, yellow submarine!
First glance key strategic dialogue outcomes
👩🌾 Linking CAP payments w/ income, moving away from area-based
💰 New Agriculture Just Transition Fund & Nature Restoration Fund (outside CAP)
🎯 Territorial action plans /sustainability goals
🫰 Tax reductions on sustainable products
This week I met John, a Dutch livestock farmer who firmly backs a reduction in the number of farm animals (yes, you read that right), shift to more plant based eating & more circular thinking.
He’s also in an even rarer category - someone who is intensely satisfied with his job
Visiting a farm in the Czech Republic last week, I met a farmer who had installed a biogas system on his farm. He estimated it more than halved his monthly bill from 450,000 CZK to under 200,000 - AND protected his small local village from soaring energy costs

I spoke to
@BBCWorld
today about the farmers’ protests taking place across the EU, the deeper concerns driving this unrest and why scratching the surface of the problem will not be enough to calm the current discontent
This debate can be basically by summed up with "solidarity with farmers, thanks to farmers, we the [*insert political group name here*] are the friends of farmers" followed by precisely 0 constructive suggestions to concretely help them
⚠️ Here are some of the faces you can expect to see in the European Parliament’s AGRI and ENVI committees this next 5-year political cycle (to be confirmed later this week) 🧵

One key theme has emerged from

: the need to strengthen

in the 🇪🇺 & reduce reliance on imports - by no means a new topic of discussion, but one which the war has thrown a new light on

Pre-emptively, I want to publicly highlight the disclaimer that this reflects the views of the author *ONLY* and I had nothing to do with this hot take (but it is essential reading for anyone questioning the value of specialist journalists)

🐺 Good news: European Court of Justice strengthens species protection!
Today, the ECJ ruled that for strictly protected species such as the wolf, preventive measures like livestock protection take precedence & shooting should only be a last resort.
