“Ane uthir tartane galcoit gevin to the king…” A new coat for the King: one of the earliest mentions of tartan in our collections, from the Lord High Treasurer’s Account of February 1533. This is a record of outgoings from the royal household.

“Epidemic influenza all inhabitants affected”, 2 June 1914. Getting flu treatment can be tough when you’re feeling ill, let alone when you live on the remote islands of St Kilda! A nurse was later sent from the mainland with medicine to aid the stricken islanders.

A letter requesting a new midwife for North Ronaldsay, Orkney, 30 January 1899. William Muir noted that the island’s two midwives at the time were aged over 80 and 90, and that residents were in desperate need of a replacement.
